2013 Lineup By "The Book"

I am currently working my way through The Book by Tom Tango. I recently read the chapter on lineup construction. His research shows that you sort the players by wOBA and place the top 3 in the 1, 2, 4 spots in the order. The next two place 3 and 5, then fill out 6-9 in descending order. I took a quick peek at the 2013 Indians' wOBA. Here are the top 9, more or less:

Ryan Raburn

0.422

Yan Gomes

0.374

Carlos Santana

0.360

Jason Kipnis

0.359

Nick Swisher

0.329

Michael Brantley

0.316

Asdrubal Cabrera

0.297

Drew Stubbs

0.294

Mike Aviles

0.294

Based on this, strictly using the wOBA strategy in The Book, this is the "optimal lineup":

Batting Order

Player

wOBA

Pos

1

Carlos Santana

0.360

DH

2

Yan Gomes

0.374

C

3

Jason Kipnis

0.359

2b

4

Ryan Raburn

0.422

RF

5

Nick Swisher

0.329

1b

6

Michael Brantley

0.316

LF

7

Asdrubal Cabrera

0.297

SS

8

Drew Stubbs

0.294

CF

9

Mike Aviles

0.294

3b

As ridiculous as that looks, I made some minor tweaking based on small sample sizes for some players, as well as what would like a less silly than batting your two catchers 1st and 2nd. This one actually makes some sense:

Player

Pos

1

Jason Kipnis

2b

2

Nick Swisher

1b

3

Carlos Santana

DH

4

Ryan Raburn

RF

5

Yan Gomes

C

6

Michael Brantley

LF

7

Asdrubal Cabrera

SS

8

Mike Aviles

3b

9

Michael Bourn

CF

So according to Tango and the math wizards who wrote The Book, that's more or less your starting lineup. Disclaimer - no consideration of R/L split was made.
