Cleveland Indians #1 pick Clint Frazier named top Arizona League prospect

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Baseball America has released its list of the top prospects from the Arizona Summer League and the Indians have 2 of the top 10.

Clint Frazier has been named by Baseball America as the top prospect from the recently concluded 2013 Arizona Summer League. Frazier put up a line of .297/362/.506 in 44 games there, with 32 runs and 28 RBI. Feedback on his defense has also been positive.

Baseball America's Top 20 Arizona League prospects

Last year's top Arizona League prospect was Addison Russell (a shortstop in Oakland's system). He was then named the #48 prospect in all of baseball at the start of the 2013 season, and went on to put up fantastic numbers in high-A ball this season. Previous winners of the award also include Mike Trout (that's pretty good company to keep, amirite?).

There has been some concern among Tribe fans that Frazier's 61 strikeouts in just 172 at bats are a bad sign, but while that's not an ideal total, this honor should make clear his overall production at such a young age (18) makes him an elite prospect we should allow ourselves to get our hopes up about.

The good news for the Indians doesn't end there though. Only a few spots down the list, at #7, is Francisco Mejia, a 17-year-old catcher from the Domincan Republic whom the Indians signed in 2012. Mejia put up a line of .305/.348/.524 in his first stateside ball. He's a switch hitter and has a tremendous arm behind the plate. Only one of the players ahead of him on the list is as young as Mejia, so while he's still a ways away from Cleveland, he's one of the very best players his age in the world.

The focus for Tribe fans this week is this week, which is a wonderful thing in late September. However, it's still worth getting some good news about the future, which will be here before you know it.
