Charles Nagy joins Indians coaching staff

USA TODAY Sports

The former ace will now be working with Tribe pitchers in a to-be-determined role

The Indians have revealed during Tribe Fest that former ace Charles Nagy will be joining the team's coaching staff, in a role that has not yet been announced. With Mickey Callaway having worked wonders in his first year as pitching coach in 2013, clearly that's not the position Nagy will be filling, but he'll be in Goodyear when pitchers and catches report for spring training in just 17 days, and the particulars of his role should become clear then.

Nagy pitched for the Indians from 1990 to 2002, pitching 1942.1 innings, winning 129 games, recording 1235 strikeouts, and posting a 4.51 ERA (101 ERA+). He is the franchise leader in innings and wins over the last fifty years, and also won 3 postseason games (sadly, that ties him for 2nd in franchise history). Nagy was an All-Star in 1992, 1996, and 1999, and a legitimate Cy Young candidate in 1996, his best season, when he went 17-5 with a 3.41 ERA (143 ERA+) in 222 innings, including 5 complete games.

Nagy was the pitching coach for the Diamondbacks during the last three seasons, and was also previously the pitching coach for the Columbus Clippers. His years with the Diamondbacks coincided with Trevor Bauer's time there, though I'm not sure that was any sort of factor in the front office's decision-making process.
