There has been some talk around the Internet about Jeff Francouer making the Indians' opening day roster as a fifth outfielder and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. First off, if we did need a fifth outfielder why Jeff Francouer? What does Francouer offer the Indians? On his career, he has had exactly three good seasons, he has essentially been a replacement player or worse every other year. His last good year was in 2011 with the Royals, since then he been worth -2.2 bWAR in two seasons. He no longer has a good glove, doesn't run well and only occasionally offers value with his bat. Finally, why does the Tribe even need another outfielder? We have Bourn and Brantley locking down Left and Center field, a Murphy and Raburn platoon in right and, if that were not enough, two capable subs in Nick Swisher and Mike Aviles. The versatility already present on the roster makes me think an extra infielder or catcher is needed. On the other hand, depth in the minors is not a bad thing and IF we have an injury on the Major League Level and IF Francouer is playing well, it would make sense to bring him up. However, carrying a 'fifth' outfielder on the roster makes little sense, at the moment.
