Justin Masterson asks Indians for a 3- or 4-year deal worth $40-60 million.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

If this report is true, Masterson should be signed ASAP

Justin Masterson has reportedly asked the Indians for a 3- or 4-year extension worth somewhere between $40 and $60 million.

Jon Heyman originally reported that Masterson was willing to sign a shorter extension than the one Cincinnati's Homer Bailey recently signed, and now Paul Hoynes passes along the figures above.

Obviously there's still a wide range of extensions within that frame work, but let's assume for a minute the lower end would be for a 3-year extension (covering 2015 to 2017; being added into his 2014 contract for $9.76 million), and the higher end is four an extra year.

I'd be quite happy to see the Indians extend him for 3 years, $48 million, and while being committed for 2018 before 2014 even starts worries me a bit, if it's a 4-year, $60-million extension, the total output would still be low enough for me to be comfortable with the risk of injury or serious decline before the end of the contract.

If what Hoynes has reported is true (and it's not 3 years, $60 million that Masterson is seeking), I think the Indians should jump at the opportunity to lock him up.
