Indians news & notes 4/14/14: Rotation, rotation, rotation

Jason Miller

The Tribe's rotation has stumbled early, but there have been some encouraging signs lately.

It's a new week, and a much-needed day off for the Tribe. As the team heads into a series with Detroit, here are some morning links to get you prepared:

Yesterday's game: White Sox 4, Indians 3

The Indians lost in heart-breaking fashion, despite a great outing from Corey Kluber. John Axford blew his first save for the Tribe, giving up a walk-off bomb to Alexei Ramirez, and turning a lovely Sunday afternoon into a mope-worthy Sunday evening.

Other Tribe news

Salazar, Wood making adjustments | Cleveland.com - In Hoynes' notes column, Danny Salazar says he thought he made good adjustments in his crazy, short 10K outing against Chicago, but that he was trying to throw too hard. Meanwhile, Blake Wood says he's been having trouble keeping his pitches down, and thinks he only needs a small adjustment to get back on track.

Bauer gives Indians a reason to exhale | Cleveland.com - Hoynes recaps Trevor Bauer's start against San Diego and what it may mean for the Tribe's season. Interesting note in here that the Indians always had their eye on Bauer, at least as far back as the 2011 draft.

Tribe starts consistent McAllister against Detroit (series preview) | MLB.com - Zach McAllister has held opponents to three or fewer runs in his last five starts. But even if he can't manage to last long into the game, Tito thinks Sunday's game combined with Monday's off day means the bullpen will be plenty rested.

Masterson confident rotation will improve | Cleveland.com - Justin Masterson knows he's been sucking, and he's not afraid to say so. He also know the rest of the rotation needs to step it up, but he thinks it's a matter of getting a few starts under their belt to warm up. I thought that's what Spring Training was for, big guy.

WBC a problem for relievers | Did The Tribe Win Last Night? - Through the lens of Vinnie Pestano and John Axford's 2013 struggles, DTTWLN looks at the effect of the WBC on relievers. I still don't buy this as a legit explanation, but it's a theory.

Santana's versatility is a luxury | Indians.com - Having played in every game so far this season. Carlos Santana's flexibility has been a boon to the team. Say what you will about his slow start, but the dude is doing yeoman's work so far.

Tidbit from around the league

Jimenez' struggles indicative of Orioles rotation woes | Sports Illustrated - After giving up 10 runs in 5 1/3 innings in his last start, Ubaldo Jimenez has an ERA above 7. He was supposed to be Baltimore's ace, and the rest of the staff isn't looking great.

Kazmir exits game early | NBC Sports/Twitter - Scott Kazmir left his Sunday start early with tricep tightness. A's staff don't think it's serious, but who knows for sure. Between this and Ubaldo, maybe the Indians FO actually does know what they're doing?

Why the Brewers have the best record in baseball | CBS Sports - Hint: it's not just Mary Mark Reynolds.

John Farrell first manager ejected arguing an overturned call | CBS Sports - The Red Sox skipper's thoughts sum up the instant replay situation early on: "It was clear the replay was inconclusive."

Jeter sits out Sunday's nationally-televised game | NBC Sports - His last first late removal from the lineup for a game televised by ESPN.

Why Tigers fans should trust Dave Dombrowski | Grantland - Having overseen one of the most historic turnarounds in MLB history, Dombrowski has earned the benefit of the doubt. Bags and bags of cash don't hurt, either.
