Tribe News & Notes 4/28/14: Santana's bad luck, Carrasco's time in rotation both due to run out

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Santana has had some awful luck on batted balls this year, but that's not the whole story. Meanwhile Carlos Carrasco's days as a starter are surely numbered.

It was an ugly weekend in San Francisco, with Danny Salazar's excellent start the only positive takeaway. The Tribe is hoping their bats can heat up along with the weather as they head south to LA. Here are some links to keep you busy while you await another set of late games (for all you suckers on the east coast, that is).

Yesterday's game: Giants 4, Indians 1

Salazar finally pitched the way we hoped he would, and the way he proved he could last year. Too bad we lost the game on a walkoff to some jobber named Brandon Hicks.

Other Indians news

BABIP not the only cause for Santana's woes | Did The Tribe Win Last Night? - Carlos Santana's unsustainably low BABIP is only one of the factors in his abysmal start. Turns out he's also swinging at too many "pitchers' pitches" and generating a lot of weak contact. Fortunately, he's walking at the highest rate in his career, and his luck is likely to change.

Indians can't wait longer to move Carrasco to 'pen | Indians Baseball Insider - What the Indians do with Carlos Carrasco is a pretty strong indicator of how they plan to play the rest of the season. According to Jim Berdysz, if the Indians are playing to win now, they can't keep Cookies in the rotation any longer.

Top of Indians order heating up | Indians.com - For the first few weeks of the season, Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn, and Jason Kipnis were either literally or figuratively non-existent parts of the Tribe offense. But lately, they've been stepping it up. If only Carlos Santana would join them.

Tribe catcher Perez bounces back from Bell's palsy | Cleveland.com - With Yan Gomes expected to take a leave of absence for the birth of his child in the next few days, the Indians are going to need another catcher. Roberto Perez is one of the candidates to be the stop-gap solution. The 25 year-old catcher battled Bell's palsy in 2013.

Around the league

Chapman set to return to closer role | Sports on Earth - After taking a line drive to the head last season, Aroldis Chapman is set to return to the big leagues. But for a man with seemingly superhuman power, he's approaching thesituation with a bit of trepidation.

"Korean David Wright" looking to play in MLB | NBC Sports - Jeong Choi is the best third basemen in Korea, and the 27-year-old, five-tool player is looking to play in the majors in 2015.

White Sox have special slugger in Abreu | CBS Sports - Jose Abreu is very, very good at smashing baseballs. I'm convinced we'll all come to hate him soon enough.

DC's Harper placed on disabled list | Washington Post - Nationals spark plug Bryce Harper was placed on the 15-day DL with a thumb sprain. It doesn't sound too serious, but apparently it's serious enough that he's getting a second opinion at the Cleveland Clinic.
