The Indians are calling up 2B prospect Jose Ramirez on Friday

Jason Miller

This would seem to mean Jason Kipnis is being placed on the DL.

The Indians are promoting prospect Jose Ramirez, he'll join the team for Friday night's series opener against the White Sox. The move has not yet been officially announced, but sources who would know (including IBI's Tony Lastoria) are reporting that Ramirez will be in Cleveland, and I don't imagine it's to ride the elevators at Key Tower.

The 21-year-old Ramirez (who had a brief stint with the Tribe last September, primarily as a defensive replacement and pinch runner) has gotten off to a great start this season, with a batting line of .319/.363/.484 in 105 plate appearances, with 4 home runs already, after never having hit more than 3 of them in an entire season. He's primarily played second base over during the last three years, but has also played shortstop, and this week he was also used in the outfield for the first time.

Because the move is not yet official, what we don't know is who's spot he is taking. The most likely scenario is that Jason Kipnis (who left Tuesday's game early after straining his right abdominal, and did not play on Wednesday) is headed for the DL. It's also possible that Francona has decided he thinks Ramirez can do more to help the team right now than someone else who's on the roster, with Elliot Johnson seeming the most likely candidate. I don't think the Indians want Ramirez only playing an inning or two a game though, so I'd bet on a DL stint for Kipnis, with Ramirez coming up to start at second base.

Kipnis is a very good offensive player, and despite Ramirez's strong numbers this month, it's not realistic to expect him to hit as well as Kipnis. On the other hand, the Tribe's infield defense so far this season has been horrendous, and Ramirez should do a better job with that part of the job.
