Michael Brantley exits game with back tightness

USA TODAY Sports

Come on, baseball gods, don't do this to us...

Michael Brantley exited Wednesday night's game in the middle of the 5th inning. He'd doubled in the top half of the inning, and scored on a home run by Carlos Santana, but he did not take his position for the bottom half of the frame. The team has announced he was taken out for precautionary reasons, due to tightness in his mid back, and is considered day-to-day.

It's possible he just cramped up, or tweaked something, and is back in the lineup Thursday or Friday. Certainly we've got to hope it's nothing more serious than that, because he's been the best hitter on the team so far this season, and is arguably the last player the Tribe can afford to lose right now.

Brantley was replaced in left field by Nyjer Morgan, who awkwardly tried (unsuccessfully) to make a tough play. He finished out the half inning, but was then lifted for a pinch hitter, having suffered a mild right knee sprain. He is also now listed as day-to-day. Mike Aviles moved from second base to left field (while Jose Ramirez, who'd hit for Morgan, took over at second). As of this writing, Aviles has not yet been slain by whatever evil force is patrolling the outfield at Rogers Centre.

More on Brantley (and Morgan) as soon as there is any word. In the meantime, fingers crossed...
