Indians news and notes (Monday): It's getting real ugly around here

The pain and suffering... what does it all mean? - Jonathan Daniel

As the season spins farther and farther out of control, we ponder the meaning of lineup order, poor defense, and life itself

There's not too much to be happy about in Indians land these days. Mired in a six game losing streak and playing their worst baseball yet this season, the Tribe gears up to face the Tigers, who sport the league's best record. It's as critical as a May series can get, and may shape the course of the rest of the season.

Yesterday's game: Athletics 13, Indians 3

Indians news & notes

Francona was "stubborn" about moving Swisher, Santana down | - Tito admits that, in trying o be patient and not treat the lineup like part of a fantasy team, he was stubborn and took too long to drop Carlos Santana and Nick Swisher in the lineup. He says he finally decided he needed to do what's best for the team, and it's not meant as a punishment for either player.

Defensive woes factor into poor start; Kipnis nearing return | - A big ol' "duh" here, as Anthony Castrovince reiterates the impact of the Indians' defensive struggles. They're last in the league having committed 45 errors through Sunday and rank 26 out of 30 teams in terms of B-Pro's defensive efficiency ratings. Castrovince also notes that Jason Kipnis may be ready to make some rehab starts as early as next week.

Masterson's season getting uglier | CBS Sports - Justin Masterson is doing everything he can to ensure that his "reasonable" contract offer from the offseason looks more and more unreasonable by the day. He's pitching below league average but hey, at least he's not as bad as Homer Bailey.

Tribe, Tigers headed in opposite directions (series preview) | - Can Corey Kluber help the Indians try to salvage what is starting to look like a lost season? Three games against the hated Tigers at Progressive Field could make or break this team.

Bauer gets an extended chance to prove himself | Did The Tribe Win Last Night? - After an impressive start in AAA, Trevor Bauer will finally get the chance to test his mettle at the big league level now that the enigmatic Danny Salazar has been demoted. Bauer wowed fans in his only MLB start this year, but carries a track record of iffy performances on the big stage. A solid start Tuesday against Detroit would go a long way.

Tribe hitters confused about scoring concepts | Wahoo's On First - Attempting to inject some levity into the dismal stretch of what some have called "baseball."
