Indians place Zach McAllister on DL; make number of other transactions

The Cleveland Indians made multiple roster moves in preparation of the four games in Baltimore.

After a wild game on Wednesday against the Tigers where Zach McAllister was lit up for the third straight game and Thursday's original starter, Josh Tomlin had to be used, the Indians needed to make multiple moves in preparation for the series against the Baltimore Orioles.

First it was announced that Justin Masterson would start Thursday's game on three days rest instead of his previously scheduled Friday start. That in itself did nothing to alleviate the stress on the bullpen as everyone but Cody Allen was used on Wednesday and many of them have been used for multiple games recently.

Then later today, the Indians decided to put McAllister on the 15-day disabled list (DL) with a lower back strain. This allowed them to recall TJ House because he had been optioned down earlier this week and hadn't been with Columbus for his full 10 days. In order to get another arm in the pen, they optioned Kyle Crockett down and purchased the contract of Mark Lowe.

That move is unfortunate for Crockett as he hails from the Poquoson, Virginia and he was looking forward to seeing family and friends this weekend. In order to add Lowe to the 40 (and 25) man roster, another move was needed. Nyjer Morgan was transferred to the 60 day DL to accommodate Lowe.

Lowe (BRef stats) was a fifth round pick by the Mariners in 2004 and pitched for them from 2006 until being traded to Texas in 2010 in the Cliff Lee trade that netted Justin Smoak among others. He spent early 2013 with the Angels before being cut. The Rays signed him in spring training and the Indians signed him after he was cut by them. In Columbus, he pitched 16.1 innings in 16 games with a WHIP of 1.469 and 21 strikeouts.
