Tribe News & Notes Monday, 5/26/14: Kipnis' return, Kluber's consistency, and Beckett's no-no

Rob Tringali

The Indians get an All-Star back tomorrow, and have another one in the making.

It could have gone better in Baltimore, but it also could have gone worse. Lots of positive things coming out of that four-game set, and the Indians are a lot better off this Monday than they were last. Here's what's going on in Tribeland:

Yesterday's game: Orioles 4, Indians 2

Trevor Bauer just didn't have it, and neither did the offense. Lonnie Chisenhall continued his hot streak, though.

Tribe news & notes

Kipnis set to return Tuesday | Indians.com - All-Star Tribe 2B Jason Kipnis rested on Sunday, but will play one more game with AAA Columbus before slotting back into the 2-spot on Tuesday against the White Sox. Kip's return should give the Tribe some much-needed added flexibility in the field and hopefully an achor at the top of the order.

Swisher nominated for Feller award | Cleveland.com - Nick Swisher has been nominated for the second year in a row for the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award. The award recognizes a current MLB player and HoFer every year who have contributed significantly to the US military, and also honors a Navy Chief Petty Officer. Swisher was surprised to learn that his nomination was not based on his Prestige Level 10 rank on Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Kluber's consistency anchors Tribe rotation | Did The Tribe Win Last Night? - There were so many question marks concerning the Indians' rotation coming into 2014. How could they replace Scott Kazmir and Ubaldo Jimenez? Would Danny Salazar pan out? Despite the mostly negative answers to those questions, Corey Kluber has been a rock, the Tribe ace in 2014, and among the AL leaders in several statistical categories, such as...

Kluber 2nd in AL in K's | Cleveland.com - Corey Kluber says he doesn't try to strike people out, but the feeble remnants of his human brain have little control over the will of the robotic parts of his cyborg chassis. Second behind only David Price with 83 strikeouts so far, he says the K's are a bi-product of making quality pitches, as well as abject terror in the hearts of batters.

Tribe looks to continue surge against Sox (series preview) | Indians.com - Josh Tomlin with take on Jose Quintana in the first game of a three-game set on the South Side. Looking forward to some high-quality sideline reporting from our sizable LGT Chicago contingent.

Tidbits from around MLB

Beckett throws no hitter, but is it sustainable? | CBS Sports - Josh Beckett threw a no-hitter Sunday, even though he is the worst and no one likes him. But was this a fluke or part of a renaissance? Dayn Perry thinks it's a bit of both.

Stanton, king of the super-long ball | Sports On Earth - If you love ridiculous home runs, you should love Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton leads the majors in 450+ foot homers since 2010. He hit over 900 feet of homers on Friday. He's so dreamy...

Manny being... coach? | Sports On Earth - Yes, Manny Ramirez is returning. This time, he'll be a player-coach for the Cubs AAA team, but will baseball's most famous space cadet be able to translate his aloof zen approach into mentoring young hitters?

Dickey & Scherzer discuss pitch counts | Fangraphs - A fun and insightful little piece, R.A. Dickey and Max Scherzer riff on the roll of pitch counts and how they affect pitcher intensity in the modern game as compared to a marathon outing by Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn in 1963.

Red Sox whine, start fight in midst of loss | CBS Sports - The Red Sox, apparently playing by little leauge rules and exhibiting little league maturity, took umbrage with Yunel Escobar stealing third despite the Rays being up by five. Benches cleared, and Boston continued to display their league-leading sense of entitlement.
