Game 57: Indians 6, Rockies 4

Box Score

Indians improve to 27-30

Your hometown Cleveland Indians defeated the Colorado Rockies this afternoon at Progressive Field thanks to a walk-off home run by Michael Bourn, sealing a 6-4 win for the Tribe. The center fielder's timely slam into the right field stands was the first walk-off homer of his career and it couldn't have come at a better time.

With the score tied at 4-4 and extra innings looming, Mike Aviles started the ninth off with a sharp single up the middle for his second hit of the day. George Kottaras, making his second start of the season, didn't live up to his exceedingly high level of expectation by hitting a home run. Instead, he successfully bunted Aviles into scoring position, bringing Bourn to the plate. Bourn was hitless up to that point, with just a walk in the first inning for his efforts, but that didn't phase him one bit. He proceeded to turn on Rockies' reliever Adam Ottavino's pitch, cranking an arcing shot over the fence that lifted every fan to their feet and put a memorable seal on a 6-4 victory that cemented the series sweep in fine fashion.

Tribe starter Josh Tomlin had a strong outing but was limited to 5.2 innings as the Rockies were successful at making him work deep in the count. Tomlin exited the game after 100 pitches in the sixth inning, with Terry Francona taking no risks at pushing him too far. The Little Cowboy scattered 4 hits and 1 walk during his afternoon of work, giving up 3 runs, only 2 of them earned off the back of a Corey Dickerson home run in the second inning. Tomlin had his breaking ball working though, and used it effectively enough to strike out 8 Colorado batters. One strikeout stood out in particular, when Tomlin dropped a filthy curve in for strike three against Troy Tulowitzki to end the first inning. It was exactly like Trevor Bauer's beautiful, buckling curveball against Tulowitzki yesterday, a picture-perfect replica. Unfortunately Tomlin's chance at earning his 4th win of the season was eliminated in the seventh inning when Bryan Shaw allowed the tying run to score. Still, it was a good day at the office for Tomlin as he continues his fine form since joining the rotation.

Michael Brantley was superb again. You think I might get tired of writing that, but I don't. The All-Star caliber Brantley went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and 2 runs. He continues to pace the offense and is playing the best baseball of his career at the moment. He is truly a joy to watch, and I've come to expect a hit from him every time he steps to the plate now. He usually delivers too.

The Indians' victory today caps a three game win streak that lifts their record to 27-30 and off the bottom of the AL Central. They now welcome the red-hot Boston Red Sox to town for a three-game series, beginning tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm ET. The starters will be Justin Masterson for the Tribe against John Lackey for Boston.
