Series preview: Indians at Red Sox (June 12-June 15)

Holt and Sizemore - Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

The Indians conclude this ten game road trip with a visit to the suddenly cold again Red Sox.

The Tribe try to bury the Red Sox even further in the AL East standings as they visit the Park on the Fens for four games.

  • Thursday's game is at 7:10 PM (Tomlin vs. Lester)
  • Friday's game is at 7:10 PM (Masterson vs. Lackey)
  • Saturday's game is at 4:05 PM (House vs. Peavy)
  • Sunday's game is at 1:35 PM (Kluber vs. Workman)

The Indians will fly directly home after the Sunday day game as they welcome the Angels for another four game set and then the Tigers for three. Then finally a day off occurs on Monday June 23 after 23 straight games.

Division Watch: Twins at Tigers, Royals at White Sox.

Just over a week ago, the Red Sox were riding high, landing at Progressive Field, owners of seven game winning streak. The Indians proceeded to sweep them and since then they have continued the tailspin by winning just one of three in Detroit and one of three in Baltimore. On that nine game road swing, they were outscored 42-23.

They have fallen from seventh to fourteenth in scoring runs in just those nine road games. There were a couple of decent pitching performances on the road trip, but all in all, very mediocre. There have been a few roster changes since they visited Cleveland as well, at least on the offensive side.

While in Cleveland, 1B Mike Carp also landed on the DL, necessitating some roster shuffling. Stephen Drew was called up after some gametime in the minors, shifting Bogaerts to third and Holt to first. Then Napoli was activated and now Holt has taken over in left. Drew has recently been nursing a minor injury so I would expect Herrera to play some. Also, Gomes and Sizemore seem to be splitting time now in right. Both rookies Alex Hassan and Garin Cecchini were sent down and Nava called back up for a bench role.

Overall, this lineup is not looking very good. Obviously Ortiz is the main cog and Napoli was hitting pretty good before the injury. Holt has been a surprise and that is why they are moving him around defensively to keep his hot bat in the lineup. The bench other than Gomes is pretty non-descript. During the three games in Cleveland, Bogaerts and Ortiz provided most of the offense, tallying seven of the Red Sox 22 hits.

There were no roster changes to the pitching staff. And all three weekend matchups are identical to the previous series. But since this is a four game series, we also get to face their good lefty Lester. He has a 2.91 FIP this year and is 6-1 in his career against Cleveland in 13 starts. He owns a 1.185 WHIP and 9.5 K/9 in those 13 games. He lost to Detroit 8-6 in his last start. Lackey pitched a complete game in the Cleveland opener and then beat Detroit. Peavy was cuffed around by the Tribe and lost to the Orioles 4-0. Workman only lasted five innings in the finale, giving up three runs, but pitched a beauty against the Orioles, winning 1-0.

The bullpen pitched really well in that past series, with only Mujica and Capuano really getting hit hard in the extra inning affair. Everyone else totaled 7.2 innings allowing just four hits, walking one, and striking out seven and not allowing a run. They do carry three lefties, but Breslow has been ineffective.
