Series preview: Angels Indians (June 16-June 19)

Hamilton and Trout - Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Indians try to exact revenge for their earlier sweep in Anaheim as the Angels visit Progressive for four games.

The Tribe start a seven game home stand with a four game set with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This will make three of the last four series that are four games long (and four of the last eight).

  • Monday's game is at 7:05 PM (Weaver vs. Bauer)
  • Tuesday's game is at 7:05 PM (Shoemaker vs. Tomlin)
  • Wednesday's game is at 7:00 PM (Wilson vs. Masterson) ESPN2
  • Thursday's game is at 12:05 PM (Richards vs. McAllister)

The Indians wrap up the home stand next weekend when the Detroit Tigers make their second trip to Cleveland. Then Monday will be an off day as they head back to the west coast to visit the Diamondbacks, the Mariners and the Dodgers.

Division Watch: Royals at Tigers, Giants at White Sox, Twins at Red Sox.

The Angels have been excellent at maximizing their opportunities. They are only seventh in average and eighth in on base percentage, but the third place in slugging has led them to be third in runs scored. The pitching staff has been very good this season. Although they walk a few too many batters, they keep the hits to a minimum. And defensively, they are polar opposite from the Indians as they lead the league in fielding percentage.

The Angels had a rough road trip at the end of May, 3-7 against Seattle, Oakland and Houston, including getting swept by the Athletics. But then they swept the White Sox and took two of three from the A's at home before this current road trip. They just lost two of three in Atlanta.

When we were swept in Anaheim at the end of April, the Angels were missing both Hamilton and Calhoun. Calhoun has hit at a 270/352/397 clip since being activated and Hamilton has hit 283/327/413 since his return. Trout has been fantastic this year, albeit he has been a ta cold in the last week or so. Cron has taken over for Ibanez as father time seems to have caught up to him like it has with Giambi. Aybar left last night's game with a sore left hip.

In that April series sweep, Trout (1205 OPS), Aybar (917) and Freese (878) did most of the damage. Conger did really well in his limited playing time (1500) and hit the only home run of the series. Roster changes include JB Shuck going back down to AAA once both Calhoun and Hamilton were healthy and Ian Stewart landed on the DL.

Weaver won his start in April, but was not as dominant as usual. He allowed 2 runs in 5.1 innings on 8 hits and had 6 strikeouts. Lifetime, he is 8-3 in 17 starts against Cleveland, with a 3.07 ERA, 1.295 WHIP and 7.1 K/9. Shoemaker is in Tyler Skagg's rotation spot right now. He has been up and down all year, which isn't uncommon for a player with just 10 career games at this level. Wilson, being a lefty, was almost unhittable in the April series. He allowed just 2 hits, 1 walk and 1 run in 8 innings, punching out 8. He loves to face Cleveland as he has a 4-1 record in 7 starts since 2010 with a 1.70 ERA, 0.923 WHIP and 8.3 K/9. The finale will feature Richards, who the Indians did not face in April. That is a good thing too as he has the best numbers of the Angels starters this year, a 2.56 FIP. This will be his first career appearance against the Tribe.

Frieri had lost his job in April, putting old friend Smith in the closers role temporarily. But Frieri is back in Mike Sciosca's good graces. Since taking the role back, He has 9 saves, 1 loss (non-save situation) and a 4.60 ERA in 15.2 innings. Most of the damage to the ERA happened in Atlanta when he gave up four runs without recording an out. The rest of the pen is deep and good. The Tribe managed just 4 hits, but did get 5 walks in 6.2 innings in April. The only runs came off Yoslan Herrera, who along with Michael Kohn and Nick Maronde, has been optioned down to AAA. The one oddity is that the Angel pen does not feature a single lefty.
