Indians send down Zach McAllister, call up Vinnie Pestano

Jason Miller

Well look who it is!

The Indians have recalled relief pitcher Vinnie Pestano from Triple-A Columbus, and optioned Zach McAllister there in order to make room on the 25-man roster.

Pestano was the Tribe's top reliever in 2011 and 2012, a span when he posted a 2.45 ERA in 132 innings, with 160 strikeouts. He suffered an elbow injury before the start of the 2013 season though, and struggled throughout the year. In three appearances with the Indians in April, he gave up 4 runs, and looked nothing like the dominant pitcher he'd been before, his velocity down 3 or 4 MPH from what it had been.

I don't have any real sense of how his velocity has been in Columbus, but the results have been great. He's allowed runs in just 3 of his 25 appearances there, and over the last month he's thrown 13 innings without allowing a single run, with 12 strikeouts and only 7 hits and 2 walks allowed.

We'll have to wait and see how he does, but I certainly think he's won the opportunity.

McAllister only rejoined the team on Wednesday, but that night's game being rained out and a trio of days off coming up mean the Indians won't need a fifth starting pitcher for more than two weeks. I think if all five guys in the rotation had been healthy, Josh Tomlin probably would have been the guy optioned, but this move allows McAllister to get a little extra rest and hopefully be 100% over the back soreness that landed him on the DL in the first place (and maybe had something to do with the three bad starts he made before then).
