MLB Draft 2014: Indians select Bradley Zimmer #21 overall

The Indians have selected Bradley Zimmer with their 1st-round pick (#21 overall) in the 2014 MLB draft. Zimmer, a left-handed-hitting outfielder out of the University of San Francisco. He is 21 years old.

Zimmer hit .368 this season, with 7 home runs and 31 RBI in 54 games. He also stole 21 bases. Last summer he played on the U.S. college national team and also won playoff MVP honors in the Cape Cod League. Zimmer has a number tools; his bat is probably the best one. He is said to manage the strike zone well, and have strong pitch recognition. He is 6'5", and still has a ways to go in terms of filling out/developing muscle, so it's certainly reasonable to think he'll develop more power. He has solid speed and good instincts on the base paths, making him a plus runner. He has a chance to play center field, but also has a strong arm and could fit into right field.

Zimmer's brother Kyle (a pitcher) was the #5 overall pick in 2012 (Kansas City) and is one of the top 50 prospects in baseball.

The slot value of this pick is $2,008,100.

The Indians' next pick is #31. It's the compensatory draft pick they received when Ubaldo Jimenez signed with Baltimore after the Tribe extended him a qualifying offer.
