A Public Service Message Concerning Personal Conduct at the Ballpark

I went to the games at Progressive Field both Monday and Tuesday nights. I was surrounded by Cincinnati Reds fans. Every one of them was a decent, friendly person. But I did encounter an instance of misconduct that I wish to call to the community’s attention.

At Monday’s game, there were four Reds’ fans seated right behind me. During the middle of the game, their conversation, which up until that point had been unremarkable in nature, took an unpleasant turn when they began discussing whether or not to stop at the Waffle House on their way back to Cincinnati the next morning.

Now this isn’t some elitist comment about the Waffle House. Hell, I go to the Waffle House. But their conversation about the Waffle House just went on and on. First, the men began talking about whether or not they should go to the Waffle House to begin with. They then went on to discuss the merits of going or not going to said establishment at some length. And they were not being ironic in any way. This was actually a serious and detailed discussion about whether or not to go to the Waffle House.

At some point, the discussion then turned to various items on the Waffle House menu and the relative merits of each of these items. And this discussion also went on at some length.

Now, let’s be honest with each other. The decision about whether or not to go to the Waffle House should be a simple one. Either you’re going to go there or you aren’t. And that’s all there is to it. You don’t go on and on about whether you’re going to go to the Waffle House. You just don’t.

And let’s also be honest about the Waffle House menu. You have six basic choices: solid or liquid, hot or cold, sweet or not sweet. Within those parameters, everything tastes largely the same. So, again, there really is not anything to discuss here – much less discuss at great length.

So what I would say to Cincinnatians is this. You come from a city with a proud culinary tradition. In the not-so-distant past, you had nationally-known restaurants such as The Maisonette and Pigall. You still have good local beers and good local restaurants. Keep this tradition in mind when you’re engaging in public conversations. And enough, already, about the Waffle House. Because if you keep talking on and on about it someone is going to inevitably overhear you and write a churlish post like this one.

This has been a public service message from Mainstreetfan.
