Michael Bourn was a late scratch from the starting Indians' lineup for Saturday afternoon's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, with what the team termed a cervical strain. In layman's terms, that's a sore neck.
The injury was suffered on a play at the plate during the 4th inning of Friday night's game, when Bourn hit the ground fairly hard on a headfirst slide. He stayed in for the rest of the game, and was originally pencilled in for today's game as well, but roughly 45 minutes before the first pitch, Tyler Holt was put in as the center fielder and #9 hitter instead. It's a good thing the team recalled him earlier this week.
Bourn got off to a pretty miserable start at the plate this season, and is sporting an ugly batting line of .202/.264/.250. He'd been having his best week of the year so far though, with six hits in the first five games of the week, including a pair of doubles.
At this time no word has been given on how long Bourn might be out. Given that he was expected to play when the lineup was first made, the injury doesn't seem serious, and unless it turns out he suffered a concussion or something, I would expect him to be back tomorrow or on Tuesday.
