Indians Player of the Week (June 16-22): Cabrera, Gomes, Masterson, or Santana?

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Who was the Tribe's top player last week?

It's time for our weekly look at the Indians' top players of the last seven days, in which one man is chosen as better than the rest. Be sure to vote for you choice in the poll included at the bottom.

Previous winners:

The Candidates

This week's nominees include three position players,

Asdrubal Cabrera

Cabrera hit .333/.407/.625 in 27 plate appearances last week, good for a wRC+ of 193. He hit a pair of home runs (one Monday, one Friday) and led the team with 7 runs batted in, and with 8 hits, including 3 over the weekend against Detroit, when he had 5 RBI.

Yan Gomes

Gomes hit .412/.412/.471 in 17 plate appearances last week, good for a wRC+ of 154. He had at least one hit in all five of the games he played in, though they were time such that he didn't drive in any runs, and only scored one. The best part of Gomes' week was his arm, which he used to throw out 5 of 6 attempted base thieves.

Justin Masterson

Masterson didn't pitch a gem on Thursday, but he did pretty well, and it was the bets pitching performance in an uninspiring week for the rotation. He went 7 innings, allowing only 1 run, giving the team a good chance to win (which they eventually did on Nick Swisher's walk-off grand slam).

Carlos Santana

Santana hit .318/.423/.727 in 26 plate appearances last week, good for a wRC+ of 222. He led the team with 3 home runs and with 4 walks. He had at least one hit in 5 of 6 games, and drew 3 walks in the other. His home runs provided the game-winning run Monday, pulled the team within a run on Friday, and put the team ahead on Saturday.

The Winner

It comes down to the three position players for me. I think Santana was pretty clearly the top hitter, but Gomes' defense makes me strongly consider him. If Gomes had had the same rate stats as he did, in the same number of PA that Santana had, I might give the edge, but in the end I think Carlos' offensive contributions were too much better to ignore.

Congratulations, Carlos, on your second Indians Player of the Week Award!
