I hope your calm demeanor represents a good thing.  For me, calmness does not foretell a good result.  Feeling excited ensures only a slightly better result (ergo, I can't use that as a predictor - I just know that we are not guaranteed a loss).

In Cleveland you can get double-drunk at half-cost.  You can probably find a 75 cent draft somewhere in the city.  That's where I want to be.

That's an awesome deal. Do they do that every Monday? I think I'll have to pass for tonight though... I just feel more comfortable watching games at home, plus I feel half-dead today from the combination of late Saturay baseball (watching) and late Sunday softball (playing). As always, you're welcome to come by my place. Found out that the pizza place a few minutes away is amazing.

Also!

We should coordinate move-in dates/details. If you don't stop by tonight, give me a call anyway.

Re: Game Thread: October 15, 2007
I like Bob Hamelin.  He and Jeff Conine were both in the Royals system, and both stuck behind George Brett.  That logjam meant that Conine was a man among boys in AA at Memphis, and the team cruised to a Southern League title in a season where I attended almost every home game (at Tim McCarver Stadium, BTW).  It was a great summer, and it never would have happened if Hamelin hadn't been at Omaha that year.

Re: Game Thread: October 15, 2007
I vividly recall Westbrook's mid-summer start against the Sox at the Jake.

What a disastrous beginning that was.

Walk, single, single, double, single.  Bam.

Why?  Because Jake was behind just about every single hitter.

He settled down after that, but I believe tonight's game will ride on how often Jake falls to 2-0 and 3-0.

Re: Game Thread: October 15, 2007
You can say that all of our pitchers need to get ahead in the count.  But, if there is one who regularly fails, it's Jake.  That's not going to be good because we do not have the luxury of an offday tomorrow to rest our relievers if they have to come into the game in the 3rd/4th inning.

Re: Game Thread: October 15, 2007
If you're gonna start the trotter, it's got to be a game vs. a RHP with an extreme groundball pitcher on the mound in his well-understood home park.  His three year split vs. RHP is .278/.368/.421 vs. Franklin's horrible .232/.292/.429 (though just in 100 ABs).   So scrapping the power for a higher OBP is certainly the right call.

Now if only Kenny was moved into the #2 slot...yeah, right.

just so long as we don't see any more balls scoot under his glove and roll to the wall, and gutz comes in when the bullpen does or if trot has to face okajima, i'm fine with this move. 0-4 is 0-4 but i don't want 0-4 with an error and two balls that drops just out of his reach...

Let's show Simmons our home field advantage
From his ALCS musings...

E. The No. 1 thing that killed the Red Sox in Game 2: Because of the ridiculously late start (8:21 at night), the weather (dipped into the mid-40s as the game went on) and the length of the game (at 11 p.m., we were still in the fifth inning), Fenway's homefield advantage was removed by midnight. Anyone who has ever watched a late-night playoff game at Fenway can tell you that it's one of the secretly coldest places on the earth. By the late innings, the crowd was dead -- and on top of that, half of them were probably figuring out how the hell they were getting home if they had taken the T (Boston's subway). I knew we were in trouble in the 10th when the crowd couldn't even get a "Man-ny! Man-ny!" chant going. It was a best-case scenario for the visiting Indians -- for the last few innings, they were practically playing at a neutral site. We won't see that happen in Cleveland on Monday with the 7 p.m. start time, but watch what happens in Games 4 and 5 with those 8 p.m. start times.

The bottom line is the phrase "homefield advantage" doesn't matter nearly as much as it should when it's midnight, it's 40 degrees outside and you have a stadium filled with frozen fans.

I wish we could see the questec grades.  I'm fine with a tight strike zone, but this has been horribly inconsistent.  That has to count against the ump.

Re: Game Thread: October 15, 2007
Guessing timlin goes 1.1 at most, followed by delcarmen, okajima and papelbon, pretty much regardless of the situation, barring any indian rallies.

Any of them could go again tomorrow, potentially 2, and then use up that off day.

Do you think Dice-K is done for the series?  I mean, can he expect to come back and have a decent game 7?  His head must be spinning

Re: Game Thread: October 15, 2007
I can't even really blame our hitters for chasing pitches like Garko's strike three there, because for all they know it's going to be called a strike anyway.

Anybody notice that early on every groundball went to the right side (or the few hits up the middle) but now most of them seem to be going left, towards Peralta?

Re: Game Thread: October 15, 2007
Just talked to my dad who's at the game.  He made two points:

  1. Crowd is amazing.  It's like a massive party for the city.

  2. He wants Wedge to have someone up in the bullpen just in case Westbrook loses it.  He says Jake loses it so quick sometimes.  I think this is a good point.
