Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi

I've never heard of the guy, but apparently we're making a big play for him. I guess Shapiro is serious when he says you can never have too many bullpen arms. Has anyone taken a look at this guy? He's apparently 33 years old and averaged 31 saves over the last few years. Take a look at his stats. Nothing too terribly impressive by way for K/9 or ERA. It'll be interesting to see what kind of money he gets. - -

Kobayashi from 2 years ago and not at his best.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
He definitely has his question marks.  This is the second Japanese reliever that the Tribe has been linked to.  Shapiro must have found a new inefficiency.

Just heard on the radio that Shapiro is holding a press conference at 3:30 today.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
I thought Kobayashi was that kid who eats a crapload of hot dogs once a year...

News of this deal comes completely out of left field. I wouldn't have even guessed that we were serious players for any of the imports, but it looks like he'll be signing soon. I don't know much about him other than what MLBTradeRumors said: "Kobayashi's deceptive delivery could result in a year or two of MLB success." His peripherals seem decent, though they obviously don't blow me away.

I tend to just trust the front office and the scouting department on this type of move, so...cool.

Well obviously he'll have the coolest name of any possible FA we could have signed.  Game threads will be overrun with hot dog eating pictures.

That sounds better than the types of pictures we would have associated with our last Japanese pitcher...

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
I like this alot. This guy is a healthy veteran with lots of experience closing games. He should be a dependable 7 inning level reliever.

This is good news. I'd guess we'd give him a 2 year deal with a 1 year team option at around 3.5M per year.

by KevinV on Nov 20, 2007 1:16 PM EST reply actions

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
That would be the typical deal for Shapiro, but I can also see a club option for a 3rd year if he could get it.

Right thats what I meant. Sign him through 2009, with a club option for 2010.

Rotoworld:

With Hitoki Iwase off the board, Kobayashi was the best Japanese reliever available in free agency.

Well OK then.  And according to the YouTube video, he at least throws hard.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
Comments from BP include "Kobayashi has been a dominating closer for the better part of seven and a half seasons, thanks in large part to a 98 mph fastball and powerful inside-out slider."

Meet your new closer?  It's a possibility.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
Copy/paste from MLBTradeRumors:

It's been said that Kobayashi would prefer to close but it's not a dealbreaker.

Here's what Bob Bavasi of JapanBall told me about Kobayashi:

This closer was the number one draft pick by the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1999.  He may be the best available reliever on the free agent market, though he has not made the sort of overtures about wanting to leave Japan as the other two.  During the recent playoffs in Japan, his manager, Bobby Valentine, noted that Kobayashi keeps "looking better every time out."  True enough, and a reason I like him.

And here's what Aaron Shinsano and Jackson Broder of East Windup Chronicle said about him:

Lost seven games and ERA rose nearly a point in 2007, but that shouldn't deter teams from pursuing this 200+ save closer for Chiba Lotte. Throws from the stretch, and has that deceptive delivery that scouts seem to like these days. Has a great forkball that often tails in toward the batter. Not as good as Iwase or Koji Uehara, but might just be an upgrade over, say, The Farns.  Tak adds that he was dropped to the "minors" at the end of the season and many feel his velocity and control are slipping.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
Good thing our bullpen's success isn't tied to this guy. He's nice insurance if Perez, Lewis or Betancourt take a step back. Plus, the Jeff Stevens Show could make an appearance mid-season if things aren't looking good.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
I can't gind any GB%.  For some reason Baseball Cube is missing his 2007 season, but he's put up good HR/9 rates in all but one year.  He strikes out 19.6% of batters he's faced over his career, and IIRC 20% is great.

So, I guess I'd take him any day over a Roberto Hernandez if we're talking veterans with closing experience.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
I'm a fan of the japaneese relief pitcher imports.  They always seem to have a year or two of success before they are figured out.  I'm too lazy to look up all the imports, but remember this guy.

I think we will see a similar career path from Hideki Okajima, so if we can get 1 year out of Koybashi, it is well worth it.

Two years with an option for 2010.

I'll bet that the total deal is worth about 10 mil plus incentives.  If it's under that or right at that, I love this deal.  Classic Shapiro, under the radar with a nice chance to be an absolute steal.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
Without knowing just how good "Masa" is gonna be (I'd like to think Shap didn't wake up this morning and think "Let's sign some dreck to throw against a wall"), I like this move. Probably won't cost as much as a current MLB FA RP would (although I hope the apparent rush to exploit this new "market inefficiency" hasn't already driven Japanese reliever prices through the roof), and we give up no draft picks. Keen.

I already have some hot dog Kobayashi pictures saved for appropriate moments in the game threads.  That includes one of him looking sick in case Masa gives up a couple of runs.

This, of course, will never happen.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
I like this move as well. Alot of these japanese pitchers rely on a funky breaking ball/off speed pitch, but generally don't have much of a fastball. Kobayashi does -- in fact he throws it in the mid 90's. He also had very good control in Japan.

If you look at the stats he put up in Japan, he has been better than Saito's and comparable to Okajima's. Out Kobayashi and Yabuta (another Japanese reliever we've been linked with), Kobayashi seems like the better pitcher.

Exciting stuff, now let's bring in our stud left fielder, extend CC's contract and we're done!

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
Don't forget about extending Betancourt.

by KevinV on Nov 20, 2007 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
Betancourt is under control through 2009.  Given reliever volatility and some past injury issues, I doubt Shapiro has any taste for extending him at this point -- unless he can get a ridiculous bargain, which is always possible.  I mean, geez, the guy's only made $1.8 million so far, he's practically a pauper.

The Indians may also want to use a multi-year deal with Betancourt to curb his first significant arbitration payday.  So we may see a two-year deal with a fairly generous option for 2010 just for that reason.

by Jay on Nov 20, 2007 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
Hrm my mistake. I thought 2008 was his last year of arbitration.

I agree that Shapiro will try to buy out his arbitration years and try to get an option. The Indians love cost certainty. They might even wind up spending a little more to sign him like that, but I think its worth mitigating the risk. What if Jobo blows out his elbow in April and Betancourt winds up saving 40 games? That might lead to a huge pay bump for 2009. On the flip side a 2 year garunteed contract for Betancourt is not a huge risk to us.

More relief pitchers that have potential to be very good relief pitchers?  Hey!  Key.  I'd love to get one more bullpen arm with some potential, just because you can never, never, never have a large enough Circle of Trust.

Re: Tribe Near Deal with Kobayashi
definately. A 23-year old with upper 90's heat and a potentially wicked breaking ball is very attractive.

Btw, what should Kobayashi's nickname be?
