Game Thread: April 12, 2007

Los Angeles at Cleveland, 1:05 PM (STO)
(Played at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin)

Starting Pitchers:

Cleveland: Jeremy Sowers (3.00 ERA, 2 PRC)
Los Angeles: Dustin Moseley (1.50 ERA, 5 PRC)

Al of Bleed Cubbie Blue is heading to Milwaukee to watch the game, and he's posted a game thread at BCB, so be sure to check that out.

The Victor Watch continues:

As for when Martinez will return, the Indians are hoping this weekend's series against the White Sox provides the answer.

"We're gonna know a lot more by this weekend," Wedge said.

Also, Cliff Lee is slated to make another rehab start at Lake County on Saturday. He's sheduled to go three innings, and he'll be on a pitch count of 50 pitches.

Did anyone else notice on the MLB site under the preview for the "Boys of Summer" feature story, the links at the bottom?  The story refers to the games delayed/called due to rain, cold, and snow.  So the links below the teaser are links to MLB jackets, "Rain delay hats" and J.T. Snow rookie cards.

Serioulsy, how random is that?  I wonder if it is an automatic thing, or if someone at MLB.com has a sense of humor.

Anyway, now on to the main event.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
I'm relatively new to the blog comments so I don't know if it's been discussed before, but they need to find a way to get Grady in the 3rd spot of the lineup protected by Pronk and Victor (once healthy).  I think the numbers he could put up in that spot would be mind-numbing.  But I guess we'd have to find out if Barfield is able to bat leadoff.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
From what I can tell, exactly half of the commetors here like to talk about batting order and put a lot of stock in it (like you) and the other half either don't care or would prefer to just bat our hitters in order of descending ability, to maximize ABs (like me).

My ideal leadoff hitter is Hafner.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
So what I've gotten from your comments in this thread, the Indians will strike out more than any team this year, they have the worst infield in the baseball, nobody is allowed to make a rookie mistake, and Pronk hasn't been hitting because he's too busy worrying about his contract?

Despite all this, we somehow managed to win?  Wow, we must have gotten pretty lucky.

I don't understand how so many people on here can be so pessimistic about the team this early in the season.  Especially since we have won two series against decent teams and have had some mental hurdles to deal with.

I personally think this has been a great start and am looking forward to the season.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
I'm not too worried about Hafner, particularly
after MArtinez returns.

We know the bullpen and defense were the areas that needed big improvement from last year.  There are some hopeful signs but there are still too many IF fielding issues and shakiness in the set-up situation to feel comfortable that were headed to the post-season yet.

It was a high throw, you could really argue either way. Hernandez had to go up pretty far to get it & he was trying to find the bag with his foot while doing so.

GB to first, Garko goes to Peralta covering second for one & then Peralta fires back to Hernandez covering first for the second out. However, Peralta's throw was high, Hernandez took his time in getting over there, and he got kicked by Garrett Anderson on the way by.. and the throw went high off Roberto's glove, allowing Cabrera to score.

um....this is a pretty nonsensical comment. He had Fultz up for Anderson (if he chose) or to face Izturis who's '06 OPS vs. lefty pitching was .151 pts. lower than  against righties.

What is wrong with that logic? How is Wedge an idiot for Hernandez not doing his job?

Also from the radio broadcast they made mention repeatedly that Hernandez was slow to make it to first and if he had cut and ran there right away he would have been able to position himself to catch the ball.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
I don't think Rouse is very comfortable at third - and his play there during spring training indicated as much.  He's really on the club to play short and second when needed.

In Wedge's defense, I think Blake is much more comfortable there (his error today, notwithstanding) and is really considered to be Marte's backup at that position.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
Houston has always been my NL team. I grew up in LA and they were the division rivals to the Dodgers ....

But Milwaukee has been a team I've liked for while. Good young hitters around the team: 1B - Fielder, 2B-Weeks, SS-Hardy, 3B-soon to be Braun, CF-Hall. C-Estrada. A pretty solid core. They need little upgrades in LF/RF (although Jenkins is off to a hot start), and their rotation is pretty decent - Sheets, Capuano, Suppan, Bush, Vargas, with Gallardo up and coming.  Even the bullpen is decent -Cordero, Turnbow and Wise are okay.

So root for them all you want, they have a very decent chance to win that division this year.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
With Borowski, I think there has to be some level of "That's how he is." We knew he was Wickman-lite and that's basically how he's looked. For now, I'll say he looks about how I would've expected.

Like Wickman, he only gets the result. That's the only thing he offers-a save.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
Yea....Not sure what I expected, I think I hoped for a better closer then Wickman, otherwise, this years bullpen is essentially a carbon copy of last years, which could be argued is the reason this team did not succeed in 06.

Re: Game Thread: April 12, 2007
I guess part of the equation is that Wickman wasn't the problem. So we replaced the non-problem with another non-problem, which isn't a solution, but it's better than a problem.(?)

For me, the idea is that the bullpen last year was legendarily bad. I thought just by standing still it had to get better. I hope that's true.

If Hernandez is not an upgrade at all, however, that sucks. The Foulke retiring is somewhat understated I think-that really hurts.

I personally think we've seen what Borowski is. I'm going to make a guess that you may have a higher expectation of him than I, which is fine. I'll also say that he hasn't pitched that well so far either (3 runs in 3 IP before this game), but he doesn't seem to be rattled by it as much (the veteran factor)...which I feel more comfortable with.

I really think this is a big, big win for us.  Not only are we 2 for 2 in terms of winning series, but I think we start to regain a little bit of momentum too.

I think we had some momentum heading home after the first Sox series (only to be snowed out of a series where we likely would have taken 3 of 4), and hopefully now we can parlay that into a strong series against the Sox at home before an offday and a big roadtrip.

In terms of April games, I think this one was a very important one for us . . . a good way to head into our "Home Opener."

Clearly.

I love it how the small-ball failed , but the 3 run homer saved the day.

Even though runs were hard to come by in the last two games, I'm not sure what to make of the Barfield bunt call.  He executed it properly, but Garko (pinch hitting for Marte) followed it with a K.  When there are two outs the pressure goes way down for the pitcher; he's most likely going to escape the pinch at that point.

Does this team strike out too much to incorporate these types of plays into it's overall offensive strategy?

I won't be following the Indians again until April 30.  I don't expect to see or hear much about them in China, although in 2005 I did meet an Indians fan from Ohio(wearing an Indians jacket) on a main street in Shanghai.  He had identified the 2 or 3 bars in town where MLB games were sometimes shown.

I had to settle for a Japanese feed of a Houston-WS game on local cable at my brother-in-law's. Except for a few words, the announcers weren't of much use to me.

When I return, I would be very happy to see the Indians with one of the 3 best records in the AL>
