Pitches like that are why I don't think comparisons between Carmona & Sowers are all that great. Yeah, like Sowers, Carmona doesn't K a lot of guys, but he's got the stuff to do it if he's not getting them to pound the ball into the turf.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
Dick's ad count: 1. If you don't have MLB.tv, they used to just black out the commercials & play Pong or Pac-Man while on breaks. Now they seem to have sold ad spots to Dick's sporting goods, but they run the SAME DAMN AD every time there's a commercial break, which gets old really really fast.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
I think I hate Justin Morneau.

Reasons:

1-I really thought we could've grabbed him before last year for a pittance and I really wanted us to. The Twins we're way down on him.

2-He's terribly overrated already and that's probably only going to get worse.

3-He looks like a huge douche in his gamecast picture.

I started writing this before he hit that double.

I really think I might have a new villain here.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
After Morneau's 2005? He OPSed 741 and the Twins were pretty down on him, as I recollect. It's probably a pipe dream but at the time I was imagining some combination of guys like Garko/Blake and some pitching.

It was just one of those things where there were rumors about shopping Morneau (there was an absurd Koskie-Morneau deal that was floated around the nets) and the need was so apparent for Cleveland.

Still, it's inter-division, etc etc.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
Just annoys me that it takes an already unbalanced schedule & unbalances it more. Especially with the wild card, we're competing with basically every other team in the AL for a playoff spot, not just the teams in our division. If the AL Central has to play the NL East (with 3 teams above .500, two of which are above .600) & the AL West gets to play the NL Central (which has 4 teams sub-.500 & the Astros 1 game over), that's really giving the AL West teams a lot better shot at the WC.

Thank you for reminding me of that.  That irritating thread over on the Mariners blog, the guy was talking about Joey Cora sobbing in the dugout after the 95 ALCS, like that was one of the biggest tragedies they've ever suffered.  And I was just like, "Dude, are you kidding?  That wouldn't even make a Cleveland fan's top 20."  And I was trying to remember our own "sobbing in dugout" story for comparison.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
Very hard for a starter, who always starts the game at .500, or for any pitcher for that matter.  A reliever would have to do something like come in with the bases loaded, score tied and no outs in the ninth, and get out of it without giving up the run.

by Jay on May 17, 2007 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
It's a very high number for a starting pitcher.  Guys who hit come from behind walk-off HRs end up with huge WPA numbers as well.  Relievers who come on in a 1 run game with the bases loaded and don't allow a run to score also get a really high WPA total

Easy now... Miller has a "bruised" middle finger in his pitching hand and is being skipped at least once in the rotation. Not serious, but he did get it from pitching (rather than flipping the bird in a very cramped space), so I'd guess they'll be careful about the possibility of reinjury.

I agree with Erik.  We haven't even had three days this season with six healthy starters, so why should we act like it's to be expected?  I think it's a fair guess that even after May is done, some combination of Sabathia, Lee, Westbrook and Byrd is going to miss some five to ten starts, possibly more.

Even if it did mean Carmona had to go down for another few weeks, I would be okay with it.  Six starters sounds good to me.

In the event everyone stays healthy at the end of the season, do you think we might keep Sowers on the roster as a potential long relief man?  If nothing else to have an extra capable starter for some of those busy weeks at the end of the season where it might be nice to get someone an extra day of rest so we dont burn our staff out before the playoffs?

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
If anyone in the rotation were to move to long relief, I think Sowers is best suited for the role in the case of physically being able to handle it.  He's not a flame-thrower, so he may be able to bounce back quicker.  I'd worry about his command though.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
I think we very well might see a six-man rotation once rosters expand in September -- I said so almost a month ago.  But the way to keep someone ready for that isn't by moving him to long relief, it's by sending him to Buffalo to keep starting.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
You know, we forget in all of this back-and-forth, it was actually Sowers who jumped Carmona on the depth chart a year ago.  And he did it not because he outpitched Carmona, but because the Indians had put Carmona into the big-league bullpen out of desperation, and he was kicking ass there.

If not for that development, Sowers probably stays in Buffalo another month (last season) while Carmona is establishing himself in the rotation, and Sowers possibly opens 2006 as the sixth starter rather than Carmona.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
phew, ok let me be the wet blanket here re: carmona.  while he was brilliant today, we're talking about a guy who now has a k/bb ratio of 22/16 in 54 ip.  going into today, BABIP of .239, while the defense as a whole is allowing a BABIP of .305.  DIPS ERA of 5.06.  basically, his peripherals do not support the performance.  now, the mitigating factor here is his G/F ratio of around 2.3, which is something like #5 among AL starters.  this combined with his velocity gives you some hope that he could be chien-ming wang ... however the odds say that these types of guys are very rare and it is more likely that this will come back to bite him eventually.

is that a question in the back?  yes, mr sowers?  yes, it does seem that everyone was this excited about you a mere 8 months ago.  i would agree, the role reversal does seem somewhat ironic ... the BABIP fairy took the quarter from under your pillow and gave it to fausto, leaving you a turd sandwich instead.  well, no i wouldn't go so far as to call her THAT, but i would say that time does fly.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
Taking DIPS ERA at full value is throwing out some of the relevant information.  We could argue the details... but the main point is that no one here expects him to continue with a 2.55 era anyway.  We're not idiots, but he doesn't have to have those kinds of results to be helpful.  He's not really our ace.  His G/F ratio and velocity suggest that he can be good, as long as his walks are low.  There's no reason to think he can't be very valuable.

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
See also above ... Carmona was a unique guy statistically before he ever got to Cleveland.  Go back two years, if you had to pick five prospects with poor K rates to succeed in the majors, Carmona definitely makes that list.

by Jay on May 17, 2007 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: May 17, 2007
Was absolutely thinking the same thing earlier. Difference is in Carmona's lack of quality off-speed stuff and Sowers leftyism....I think in the end they may pan out to being similarly successful or average. However, right now I find it hard to justify anything but the utmost love for Carmona. His K rate seems to be low because he throws EVERYTHING around the plate. Quality pitches, but right around the plate. I doubt he will ever have much ability to rack up K's with that kind of pitching....and his low BABIP is a reflection of how putrid the balls hit into play really are.

This from Rotoworld:

Ronnie Belliard went 0-for-3 with a walk Thursday in his second career start at shortstop.

The other came back in 1999 with the Brewers. With Josh Wilson gone, the Nats either have to shift Felipe Lopez back to short or go to Belliard when Cristian Guzman needs a day off. That they've opted for the latter is interesting, but it won't make much of a difference for fantasy purposes, not unless Belliard ends up as a regular somewhere else after the All-Star break.

Yikes, you though the Indians' range last year was bad, think about Belliard and Lopez up the middle...

Dude, this is not a fantasy league.

Crawford has a career OBP of .328.  Against LHP, it's .312 -- and you want to put him in there in between two other lefty bats.  Not smart.

That crummy OBP has a corrosive effect on the rest of the lineup, reducing RBI opportunities and letting starters go deeper into games.  Basically, his whole approach goes against everything that makes this lineup work.

You know what's a nice feeling? Waking up a half game back in the division and going to sleep with a 1 game lead.

"In all my years of baseball, I haven't seen anything better than his stuff today," Twins right fielder Michael Cuddyer said.

I love that feeling too!
Hello osoc13 and sbricker,

It's a great feeling to gain 1.5 games in a day and be in 1st place when the day is done.  :-)

sbricker - I didn't hear that comment before; I heard Hunter's, Gardenhire's, and Santana's comments about Carmona, but that's a new one - it seems like the Twins were impressed.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)
