Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Game Thread: June 9, 2007

Cleveland at Cincinnati, 7:10 p.m. (STO)

Cincinnati: Matt Belisle (4.48 ERA, 25 PRC)
Cleveland: "Lucky" Sowers (6.63 ERA, 12 PRC)

GameCenter

In the long run, what does "depth" really get you?  We start the season with eight reasonable options for five rotation spots:  Sabathia, Westbrook, Lee, Sowers, Byrd, Carmona, Slocum and Miller.  Our #3 man got injured, and when he came back our #2 got injured.  Our #7 and #8 options have both been on the minor-league DL for a month.  And other than our #1, everyone else has swapped roles, as #5 and #6 have each looked like a #2, while #3 and #4 have been pitching ... well, like the other kind of #2.

All of which leaves us, of course, in first place.  And that's what depth gets you.  It always seems worthless right up to the moment it saves your season.

Still, it can't be denied that Lee and Sowers' six-week bed-crapping duel has become a problem not only in the pure run-prevention sense, but also in straining a bullpen that remains a little shy of anyone's definition of solid.  In their 19 starts, the Indians are a stunning 6-13.  In all other starts, the Indians are an equally stunning 30-10.

Here's the #41 through #66 AL pitchers with 40+ IP, as ranked by ERA.  Out of the 66, Lee and Sowers come in #56 and #61.  Sadly, the reality is actually worse than those rankings indicate.  The entire Texas rotation (including Millwood) and most of Tampa's have taken up residence at the bottom of those rankings.  So if we look at only teams that aren't in last place -- Texas, Tampa and KC -- then we find that Lee and Sowers are ranked #49 and #51 out of a total of 51 pitchers.

So yeah ... they've sucked.  But I would submit that it's still not time to panic.  None of our three felled starters are out with anything serious, or for very long.  And the fact is, we don't need for all these guys to have a solid second half.  Fact is, if any one of them can have a strong second half -- Lee, Sowers, Westbrook, even Miller or Slocum -- then it's going to be tough to keep this team out of the postseason.  And the odds that at least one of them can put it back together are pretty damned good.

UPDATE:  Strictly as a point of retaliation, I'd rather live in a city that manages not to have race riots in the 21st century.  The fire on the lake was almost 40 years ago -- and nobody died.

Ick. If Jake's health is not in danger, I say let him throw. He induced a bunch of groundballs. Let him throw an extended session and see what happens.

by afh4 on Jun 9, 2007 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree about an extended session in the
bullpen - sorry, I initially didn't see that in your answer.  If he does well in the extended session, I'd consider bringing him back, but I'd still like to see him make one more Minor League start before returning; there were even hints/rumors that it would probably take 3 Minor League starts before Westbrook was ready to go, even though Westbrook was only planning on making two, but after last night's performance, I think he could use one more to make sure he's ready to take on ML hitters again and give us a realistic chance to win.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

by indiansfan on Jun 10, 2007 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

It sounds like Westbrook might need a few
more rehab starts before he's ready.

Hello everyone,

Great comeback tonight - special props go out to Perez (despite the one bad pitch to Griffey - he looked pretty good other than that pitch,) Dellucci (big HR,) Gutierrez (game-saving catch,) Blake (for his hard slide on Phillips to make sure there was no DP on Hafner's grounder,) Martinez (for the big insurance run,) and Borowski (for setting them down 1-2-3.)  Betancourt and Mastny did pretty well as well (with Mastny getting a big assist from Gutierrez.)

Andrew - I think either Mike Hegan or Tom Hamilton were suggesting on the radio that Westbrook might need a few more rehab starts before he's ready to go - I know he got a lot of ground balls, but he did walk 3 AA batters in just 2.1 IP, with only 1 K and 4 ER.  And Akron's defense didn't make an E in that game, so those hits seemed to be legitimate hits off Westbrook, not due to bad defense.  I think he could use at least one more AA or AAA start to get his command back in order - I'm not sure we could expect him to do very well in his first ML start back if we brought him up now; I'd prefer he had one solid Minor League start under his belt, and when I mean solid, that's not necessarily throwing 5-6 shutout innings (though it'd be nice,) but to not give up so many walks and hits.  I mean, these are AA hitters - they shouldn't be hitting Westbrook that well.

I know we'd rather have Westbrook up here and Sowers back at AAA Buffalo, but you'd like to Jake to be as ready to go as he can be and give us a realistic chance for us to win that first game, and right now, I'm not confident his first start will be all that much better than what Sowers is giving us.  I think 1-2 more Minor League starts for Jake would be beneficial for him and the Indians in the long run because it would help to shake off some of the rust he still seems to have, rather than trying to shake that rust off up here - that might lead to a rough outing and a loss up here, whereas down there, the loss doesn't mean that much (to us at least.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread: June 9, 2007
Hard to read this without the deleted stuff, I am dissapointed I missed these games on here. I despise Cincy. A few thoughts:

  • The Reds are really a bush league organization. I have never seen so much posturing from a team that is so bad.
  • Ken Griffey Jr. "hates" the the numbers that the organization has put up so the fans can track his HR's. He gets too much credit for being classy when, in reality, he is a greedy, arrogant, selfish person.
  • A current Reds player told Tom Hamilton that the Reds were a "bad team." The player said that "we don't do any baseball things well."
  • Tom's theory on the fireworks: a Kentuckian passing the ACT. (Note: my wife is a native of that city in the south and says that it could be Italian Fest in Covington).
  • I'll take CC against Harang any day.
  • I like lists.

Re: Game Thread: June 9, 2007
The Griffey thing stems from his "hating" the numbers the franchise has put up in an obvious attempt to honor him. Another reason for it is that when he approached 500 the Reds had recently gotten a new color man in the radio booth. Griffey insisted that Marty Brenneman call all of his at bats. That just struck me as very selfish as it denied the new guy a chance to do much of anything. Rather than call Griffey out the papers just acted like it was prefectly normal for a player to hold control of the announcers.

When did he say he "hated" the numbers? Is it possible he just doesn't want attention drawn to himself?

A few further thoughts!
Hello everyone,

Two things:

  1. fwembt - I think the TV announcers mentioned that there was an Italian festival going on; they thought it was in Cincy, but maybe it was in Covington across the river.

  2. From this Indians.com article, Wedge implies that Westbrook WILL MAKE 1-2 more rehab starts, in all likelihood, so it seems Sowers won't be sent back down just yet (and Stanford didn't have a great night at AAA Buffalo, and hasn't for his last few starts, so I don't think he's a likely replacement for Sowers for a few starts either.)

On another note from that link above, Adam Miller is throwing off flat ground and will begin throwing off the mound on Wednesday.  He could rejoin the Bisons' rotation by the end of June.

Finally, check out these Indians.com links about the drafting of Mills and Day 2 of the draft (sounds like several of the Day 2 picks have high upside, even some of the college picks, and most of the picks this year were college draftees, not HS):

Mills: here
Day 2: here

Re: Game Thread: June 9, 2007
A couple points.
  1.  I was at the game.  Great Indians crowd last night.  Seemed like Tribe fans outnumbered the few Reds fans that are left.
  2.  The fireworks were for the Italian Festival in Newport, Kentucky.  The fans on the first base side were more interested in the fireworks than the baseball game.
  3.  Some idiots seated behind me were yelling the "Indians Stink" over and over.  I looked back and asked "If our first place team stinks then how bad must your last place team smell?"
  4.  GAB was almost packed last night.  Let's see if it is even half full for their next home opponent.

by LargeBill on Jun 10, 2007 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

Some thoughts about your points!
Hello Largebill,

  1. It seemed like the Indians' crowd was large and boisterous - good to see!

  2. They showed some of the fireworks on the telecast - they looked nice, but I liked the baseball action myself.

  3. LOL - that was an excellent line - I laughed the first time I read that.  You deserve kudos for that line and for saying it to them.  :-)

  4. I have a feeling the attendance will drop off considerably - will they even have 20,000?  Or will it be less?
Go Tribe! :-)
