The Tigers just lost, 4-3 to the White Sox, on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth.

Back from Philly (and a little trip to VA beach/Norfolk). Thanks to Jay and Chuck for the recommendations on where to go in Philly.

I had little to no info on what has been going on with the tribe, just trying to get caught up... Would really like to gain at least a split in this series. Gabbard isn't that good (4 BB/9), so maybe we can outslug boston tonight.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
It's been a while since we've seen the sharp one. He's given up 22 ER in his last 3 starts -- easily his best recent start was vs. TB on 7/1. Of course, since then his ERA has gone up a full run. Bleh.

I comment on this below...Gabbard is ground ball guy.  I wonder if he's just a fluke? Or will he turn into a good starter?  Better so far than Taverez, or "Hatchet Face" as we call 'im.

I really wouldn't mind Lee sucking as much if he would at least show some emotion or interest in the game.  Hopefully last week's start woke him up.  Probably a good sign that Victor is catching tonight, too.

Greeting from the Other side
Hey guys,
Pepto Bismol anyone?

Jeez trading 1-0 games gives one a lot of fantastic pitching to feast on, but man it frays the nerves.  Hats off to Carmona - he was outstanding.

Sox fans are excited about this Gabbard kid.  If he can contain a really good team like the Indians maybe he's the real deal.  Doesn't get a lot of K's but works the lineup by forcing ground outs...better hope Boston's having a clumsy day in the field - that is the likely key here.  Forcing errors and stolen bases.

I haven't done my homework on Lee...does he just suck or is it a matter of bad luck and poor run support?  Judging by the monicker "Sleepy Kitten" I can imagine the answer.

Re: Greeting from the Other side
Gabbard has BB 4 per game, has an extremely low BABIP just above .200, and has had 55% of batted balls go for GBs, not bad coupled with the 7 K per nine, but the walks and BABIP (when it corrects) are going to kill the kid. Lee is also bad, so like I said before if both offenses are on this could be pretty ugly.

oh, just remembered to answer this!

My best friend (who does not really follow baseball, but occasionally humors me) started calling him that after she saw him give some just left the game interview on ESPN and he really looked like he needed a nap. It really doesn't make any sense, but I started calling him that. I have no reason why people here decided it was a good idea because it's kind of an inside joke kind of nickname. Then again, I find it very suiting.

The Tigers have had one of the best records in MLB since June 1st. The Indians have been mediocre. If we win tonight, we're .5 games back.

Not only that but the Yanks have to play the Tigers 8 times in August and the Red Sox have another 4 games with the White sox and very soft schedule.  What this means is that even if the Tigers take the division my money is definitely on the Tribe taking the Wildcard.

Cliff's 87.2 IP @ 5.95 ERA is a whole lot of suck, and mostly in line with trends.

That said, I think he makes it through the season for us, somehow, someway.  And that he'll be back next year too, in competition for a rotation spot.  He was injured, after all, and he still has that friendly contract.

He absoltely has to not completely suck tonight.

I don't like how Hafner always puts his head down and jogs back to the dugout like a true pro. I'd like him to break a bat over his leg, throw stuff over, maybe pick up a Gatorade jug and heave it at Mike Rouse, something to show some emotion and wake him up.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
Here is my take. Wedge/Shapiro at this juncture pretty much assume Lee will lose when he pitches, but don't know what to do.  Who do they bring up?  An untested rook like Laffey.  On the other hand, they don't pull him early because that would fuck up the bullpen for the next series.  Once you're down to the Sox by 5 the game is over anyway.  So it's a dilemma, but they just can't let Lee keep starting.  Jason Stanford couldn't do worse.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
Gradyforpresident mentioned in last night's thread that he also lives in Iowa (I moved here from Chicago last year). So I thought I'd share with you an Iowa-Tribe story that happened a couple of weeks ago.

I was listening to one of the AM radio stations out here in the boondocks (I'm in a real rural area) -- I think it's out of Waterloo -- called The Sports Guy. The show's about Iowa college and high-school sports. Evidently the host is a longtime Iowa sports expert. So I wrote him this e-mail:

I'm a new resident of Iowa listening to your show for the first time when something came to mind. I'm a Cleveland Indians fan and a few years ago I read the blurb below about the Tribe's Casey Blake on the team's Web site. I was wondering if you had any info, details, anecdotes about Casey's high school career, upbringing, etc.:

Was a 1992 graduate of Indianola (IA) High School where he played baseball, football, basketball and ran track...Was named a top 10 HS athlete in the history of Iowa in a Des Moines Register survey in a list that included Bob Feller and Nile Kinnick...

Thanks much!

The Sports Guy answered my question at the very end of his program, which was (I'm not making this up!) all about the new season-ticket policy at Iowa State. He only had a half-a-minute but he said that he covered Casey in the state baseball tourney and that "Casey was a man among boys." He said that you could see that Casey was special.

I thought that was kind of interesting (a lot more than tonight's game, that's for sure).

Sleepy Kitten should be with the Bisons!
Hello everyone,

I think one of two things need to be done with Lee, both at which should be at Buffalo:

  1. Either work on him finding his rhythm as a starter

  2. Or start turning him into a reliever - he does well in short stints, but can't sustain throughout a whole start.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

What is going on in Cleveland's management's head. Why is there no discussion going on for starting pitching. I know the market is weak right now but it can't get much weaker than Cliff Lee right now. Both him and Westbrook are the achilles of the Tribe. They need to be moved for somebody like Kip Wells, which is a possible trade that would not take much away from Cleveland. They would be the best team in baseball if it weren't for Lee/Westbrook. They're terrible.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
Oh. I just woke up from a nap. Wow. Wow. Wow.

Folks, Cliff Lee isn't going to Buffalo. After the stunt he pulled tonight (I'm talking about tipping his cap to the fans), he's got to be way past Wedge's doghouse. At least Milton Bradley was an OK hitter. Cliff Lee is terrible right now.

He's not staying in this organization. Maybe this is just a hunch on my part, but I simply don't think he's a Cleveland Indian any longer.

Will we see Laffey? Will Shapiro will all of a sudden pull another starter out of the air from some non-contender? (I know that there's not much out there.)

If it's not Laffey - When is Sowers' next start? I gotta think if he has another good start he's back.

Hammy just says - Lee has 3 straight starts of 7 ER. The start before that was 5 ER. That's not 5th starter, that's waiver wire.

Ploni, and others, Casey Blake's cousin was my roommate freshmen year here at Iowa. We still run into each other every now and then - I turned him (well, I guess his cousin had something to do with it too) into a big Tribe fan.

Doesn't matter. I think Lee has tipped his last cap as an Indian. He's a douchebag, no matter how he pitches.

I don't even care if he catches on with another team and pitches well, I don't feel he should be poisoning this team right now.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
It's not a depressing post - it's the truth.  I still have nothing against Lee.  I think he should be shipped out to some NL team along with prospects for a solid starter (one with an ERA under 4.25).  But that's just my daydream.

This offense awakening does nothing to change what Lee's done.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
I don't see how. We lead the league in HR's I believe. That means alot of those near league leading runs we score come via the long ball. We have all said at one time or another, that we rarely get the clutch hits with RISP.

The players play the game but the coaches set the strategy. I was a collegiate coach (not baseball) for 23 years. It was me that got the hook when my teams didn't come through.

I'm not saying Shelton should be fired. I'm sure he works hard. He needs to get these guys more focused somehow.

In my mind, the offense IS in an extended slump!
Hello supermarioelia,

Actually, I think the offense is in an extended slump, especially if you go by the Run-Scoring Average per month:

Presuming my math is correct:

April - 115 runs in 22 games = 5.23 runs/game (LAA, NYY, MIN)
May - 180 runs in 30 games = 6.00 runs/game (LAA, OAK, MIN, SEA, DET, BOS)
June - 136 runs in 28 games = 4.86 runs/game (DET, SEA, ATL, PHI, OAK)
July - 107 runs in 22 games = 4.86 runs/game (only DET and BOS being above .500)

Now, granted, teams do change, and not all those teams were .500 at the time we faced them, NYY and PHI, for instance, but still, we've been shut down by teams like TB and pitchers like Jamey Wright of TEX that I'd have to consider this offense to be in a collective, extended slump.

Therefore, I do wonder if Shelton could do more; granted, it's not all his fault - these guys also need to figure it out (like Pronk,) but still, why have several of these guys remained in slumps and not bounced back yet?  The offense, in my mind, hasn't been the same since late May, 2 months ago - since then, we've been much more erratic offensively, having a few games like we did in April and May, but most of the time, if we can scratch out 4-5 runs at most, that's all.  And until tonight, it was mostly via the HR ball that we were scoring our runs - if we don't hit HRs, we don't score.  That too I think partly explains why this offense has been so inconsistent of late.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

My reason is that Westbrook has been primarily consistent over the last few years and my hope is that he's just finding himself.  Lee, who I don't dislike, has had all of his peripherals go consistently down over the last few years.  This is why I think Lee might need a change of scenery.

Westbrook consequentially gets the pass on faith whereas I have no faith with Lee in an Indian uniform.

Gentlemen: 2/3 of the starting rotation has had a serious, extended breakdown. Coupled with this unforseen and unexpected development, the relievers have been quite mediocre (look at Mastny tonight) and we're just not hitting since just before the break.

I'm not trying, guys, to be a downer but the bullpen never got fixed and other parts of the puzzle have been coming frazzled.

I'm working on this theory that somehow, Cleveland and Detroit's baseball teams are telepathically linked, possibly by some sort of alien symbiote.  When one goes on a losing skid, so does the other.  When one wins, so does the other.  If they play each other in the playoffs, they may very well kill each other and the National League would win the World Series by default.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
OK - against Boston this year we have matched up pitchingwise like this:

Game 1: Lee vs. Schilling - 5-3 loss
Game 2: Sowers vs. Beckett - 4-2 loss
Game 3: Byrd vs. Matsuzaka - 8-4 win
Game 4: Westbrook vs. Lester - 6-2 loss
Game 5: CC vs Matsuzaka - 1-0 loss
Game 6: Carmona vs. Beckett - 1-0 win
Game 7: Lee vs. Gabbard - now 12-5 Bosox

We've only thrown our 3 top pitchers at this team once each (we are 2-1 in those games), while they have thrown their top 3 pitchers at us 5 times (they are 3-2).  Games 5 and 6 of this series say more about how these teams would match up in the postseason than the remaining games featuring guys who won't be getting postseason starts.  In the words of Douglas Adams, "Don't Panic."  And please, carry a towel.

Beware of eternal optimists.  We're about to lose 3 out of 4 to Boston, at home, making us 2-5 against them on the year.  Perhaps the difference isn't that great in the league-wide sense, but there's certainly no reason to think we would beat them in a playoff series.  And yeah, that should cause us to worry.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
Why Westbrook isn't the same as Lee:

  • Westbrook is only six starts off the DL (not 16).
  • He's gone at least 6 innings in those last six starts (not in just 3 out of his last 6).
  • He's allowed five runs or fewer in all six starts  (not in just 2 of them).
  • He has a 4.97 ERA in those six starts, which isn't terrible (not 7.94, which is terrible).
  • He's not a dick.

Any questions?

YES I HAVE ONE - - - or three.....
First off just because you tip your hat to boos does not make you a dick, anybody on this board would have done the same thing.
Second a 4.97 ERA is not going to get the job done i don't care what kind of offense you have
Third they have the exact same amount of quality starts and Lee has only started four more games than Westbrook

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
Actually, a 4.97 ERA will get the job done a surprising amount of the time.  The main point, however, is that there's a big difference between struggling with an almost-5 ERA and struggling with an almost-8 ERA.

Westbrook also struggled out of the gate this season and turned out to be injured, possibly right from the start.  He certainly did not have a quick rehab.  In any event, I don't really see the relevance of Westbrook's stats prior to his DL stint in terms of how much he can help us the rest of the season.

I'd rather look at his performance the previous three years.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
In the past three years their stats are the same (there might be a tiny tiny bit of difference) they have both won at least 14 games the past three (one of only a couple of pitchers) ERA is about the same. Cliff gives up more home runs but he strikes out more. Every thing evens out they are the same!!!!

Okay, I went and looked it up ... Westbrook has allowed a .341 BABIP since coming off the DL.  His career number is .305, and it was .296 for 2004-2006.  So I would maintain that he's a lot lot lot closer to fine than Cliff Lee, in addition to not being a dick.

by Jay on Jul 26, 2007 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
i just noticed that b-ref is now posting babip for pitchers broken down by time period (unless they always have, and i missed it) which is very fun.

lee babip last 7 days .348
lee babip last 14 days .405

and one would expect a lower general babip from lee than jake, yes?  closer to the usual .280 than what an extreme GB pitcher would post.

not that this explains everthing (very little, probably), just interesting.

Our concern is not "who's going to end up with the better year," but who can help us win some games from here through the end of the season?

Is it that hard to understand?

Do you really think I'm wrong?  And if so ... why?  Because Lee was better in May than Westbrook was in April?

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
  • No
  • I just think they are pretty much the same type of pitcher. Lee likes the outside corner, where as Jake needs the low call around the knees, neither of them throw hard, a lot might have to do with the umpire and how he is calling his strikezone.
  • If they both finish the season with the Indians (and a big IF) I really can't see Westbrook outperforming Lee by that much. They both came off of injuries this year maybe Cliff is pitching hurt and not saying anything sort of like what Westbrook did earlier this year.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
You make some fair points here.  I just go back to my original observation.  Based just on a quick look at ERA and BABIP, Westbrook has not been that much worse than his career norms for the past month or so.  Lee has been much, much worse than his career norms, which have been trending downward steadily since 2005 besides.  So for me, that information makes Westbrook the better bet for the next two months, and to be honest, I don't even really see it as that close of a call.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
Actually, Lee missed a couple of months back in 2003 as well, but I don't know that there's any connection.

I'm not concerned about Lee as an injury problem, but I've been discontented with his performance for over a year.  Despite very good stuff, he has never lived up to his potential, which scouts felt almost unanimously was that of an All-Star starter.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
I mentioned this before but lee's delivery is causing his bones in his arm to enlarge around the elbow causing him to pitch with less velocity and not being able to maintain a consistent release point or being able to fully control his off speed pitches.  His mechanics are very poor and his injuries are result of those.  I can see him eventually having TJ and then shoulder problems or visa vera.

Because of his delivery he is losing range of motion in his arm and most likely will lose up to 25 flexion in his elbow.

They both need to step up, but I think Jay
mentioned many of the reasons why Westbrook is given a little more slack than Lee.

Hello GatorTribeFan,

Besides those reasons, Westbrook was certainly decent to solid last year, something Lee wasn't, which in turn, points to the fact Lee hasn't been solid for nearly 2 years now.  Add in the fact that his temper/attitude, etc. is showing against the team and the fans, and I think that's why he's getting less slack from people than Westbrook is.

That's not to say Westbrook gets a free pass for the rest of the season - he does need to pick it up.  For whatever reason, his sinker's not sinking like it used to.  I'm not sure his sinker ever had the sinking action of Carmona's, but it certainly was sinking down toward the dirt and plate; right now, it sort of just "floats" slowly toward the lower part of the strike zone, but not enough to prevent the hitters from driving the balls into the gaps and seats, explaining why his GB% is down this year.

At least though there's moreless an explanation to Westbrook's problems; I'm not sure anyone has an idea exactly how to correct Lee's struggles - the two things I would consider, both in Buffalo:

  1. Work on his problems down there in a less-pressure environment.

  2. Start transitioning him to the bullpen and then bring him back up as a reliever.  Lee seems to have brief good stretches, which is perfect for a reliever, and his fastball might regain some velocity to help it become a solid to plus pitch again.  In addition, his curveball alone might be enough to help him become a successful reliever, and right now, I'd take him being a solid reliever than him being a poor starter who's getting knocked out by the 5th inning every time out.

Yes, he'll be an expensive reliever, based on his last contract, but it might provide him with additional value; then, if he performs well enough between now and the end of the year, perhaps you could trade him for a piece or two to a team that could use him as a starter or a reliever in the upcoming offseason.

Just a thought and my 2 cents.  :-)

Re: They both need to step up, but I think Jay
Lee pitched 200 innings won 14 games and his ERA was 4.40 last year which was (Westbrook slighly better) pretty decent...so he has only really pitched bad for little more than half a season.

I wasn't that impressed with his 2006 season!
Hello GatorTribefan,

No offense, but if I recall correctly, Lee got a lot of run support last year, which partly explains why he won 14 games.

I didn't think it was that great of a year for these reasons:

H/9 IP = 10.05 H (224 H in 200.2 IP - that's pretty much horrendous by any standard.)
HR/9 IP = 1.30 HR (29 in 200.2 IP - that's certainly not good, and just as a guess, I bet 1/3 to 1/2 were not of the solo variety.)
K/9 IP = 5.79 K (129 K in 200.2 IP - 5.79 K - not bad in and of itself, but when it's fallen from 8.09 in 2004 and 6.37 in 2005, I don't see that as a good sign.)
WHIP = 1.41 (Not a great number in itself, and especially when it was 1.22 in 2005.)

Essentially, I think Lee was lucky/fortunate to win 14 games with those peripherals, and likely because the Indians had an explosive offense last year, especially in terms of HRs and Grand Slams.

Therefore, I don't think Lee had a solid year in 2006 as you think he did, which is why I think it's been closer to 2 years since Lee actually pitched well on a consistent basis.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Re: They both need to step up, but I think Jay
I think it's a stretch to say Lee wasn't "decent to solid" last year.  But he wasn't as good as he should have been, and he's never been as good as he appears to be, and the multi-year trend has been bad.

by Jay on Jul 27, 2007 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True - 14 wins isn't anything to sneeze at,
and some of his peripherals were okay, especially his 2.60 BB/9 IP, but like you said, Lee has always underwhelmed us, not performing at the level of a #2 starter like many thought he would.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
it's interesting to try to compare the two while they're both shitting the bed.  we're looking at two entirely different sets of peripherals to try to be reassured.  a low GB% from lee doesn't make me feel particularly better, whereas it does from jake.  a high whip from from lee makes me more uneasy than the same from jake.  low k/p from jake is no big deal, but symptomatic of a major problem from lee.  just looking at ER (and i know your analysis isn't that simplistic) won't do it.

I guess I should probably step in since I defended him originally. I'm guessing that his point isn't necessarily that Westbrook is equally as bad a pitcher as Lee, but rather that Westbrook has been spared a lot of criticism by the magnet that is Cliff Lee. Not that Westbrook deserves as much criticism as Lee, but that he deserves more than he is currently getting. But yes, I agree that Westbrook will almost certainly be fine in the long-run.

Re: Game Thread: July 26, 2007
Westbrook is a sinker ball pitcher.  Sinker ball pitchers go through rough periods but when that sinker is working they can dominate.  Cliff Lee is a fastball, curve ball pitcher and relies on location.  His arm slot is really messed up right now and only  slowing him down will correct his mechanical flaws.  I also have to think Lee's head isn't right which is exasperating the situation.

I actually think the demotion is more likely.  If they're going to work out a trade, why not first see if they can get him through (revocable) waivers, and if he's claimed, negotiate with that team first?  Trading him now would be selling low.  They might rather get his value back up a bit and then trade him later.

A trip to Buffalo will do him good.  Boy needs some humility.

In discussing the availability of Jose Contreras today, Jon Heyman made the following point:
Since Garland probably isn't going anywhere, and neither is Dontrelle Willis or Scott Olsen, here's my preference among available starting pitchers:

  1. Matt Morris
  2. Livan Hernandez
  3. Contreras
  4. Jason Jennings
  5. Kyle Lohse

And that's a .500 rotation, at best.

Consider further what each of those stiffs will cost and decide if we should really pick up another starter.

How ironic you bring up Matt Morris! :-)
Hello mkwng,

DrBGiantsfan and I joke about a possible trade of Asdrubal Cabrera for Matt Morris - he of course wants that trade to happen, and I of course, don't.  :-)

When I look at Morris' peripherals - ewww - not that great.  All the more reason why I can't see any trade like that happening (and I really don't think DrBGiantsfan does either - it's just a joke between us.)

I agree with Jay - I doubt we trade for a starter.  Essentially, Lee is/was our #5 starter; if one of the rookies, whether it be Laffey/Sowers/Smith, etc. perform at a decent level, and Westbrook (our #4 in my mind) can bounce back, that would probably be enough.  Don't forget that Chad Durbin occupied that #5 spot in the Tigers' rotation for a while, and they survived just fine (he pitched some decent to solid games for them in some of his starts.)

Therefore, I'd think one of the rookies will come up, and hopefully, give us enough production out of that #5 hole to enable us to reach the postseason.  Once we get there, that #5 starter is essentially a reliever in the postseason (hmm... does that mean Laffey or Smith, perhaps?  Smith has done both, while Laffey has minimum experience out of the bullpen, mostly in a dual-starter mode.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Oh man, Matt Morris. Back in high school, I was at some happening at a friend's house. Some kids from one of the other high schools in Cedar Rapids were there, and one (an attractive female) was wearing a Matt Morris jersey.

My best friend, quite inebriated, walked up to her and asked "What's your ERA?" It may have been the most awkward, but most hilarious, pickup line of all time.
