Barfield gets my reverse-logic pie prediction for this evening.  The guy is due for a home run.

The revolting sense of seeing Nixon's name in the lineup has worn off.

Lofton in the 2-spot continues to warm my heart, for no particular reason.

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
I'll say Martinez.  McCarthy has been something of a punching bag, and I could easily see him falling behind to Victor and either having to come over the plate or hanging a breaking ball in a hitter's count.  That's my pie prediction.

Has Victor even been pied this year?

I love this image.  On the last day of the season, the Indians are 4.5 games up in the Wild Card race, but they refuse to play in the postseason because they wished they could have won the division.  Seattle is invited in their place.  "They aren't going to settle for the wild card."  No one's rooting for them to not win the division, but I think every player on that team would be pleased with a postseason berth.

But it seems to me like his "even-keel attitude" and the "veteran calming presence" that a Nixon brings can both be blamed for our lack of urgency that we've all noticed over the last month or so. Granted it's very important the offence doesn't start to press, because that often makes things worse, but these guys need a good kick in the pants.

Pitching backwards!
Hello NickFantana,

Throwing offspeed stuff in fastball counts (like 2-0, 3-0, etc.,) throwing fastballs when a hitter is moreless expecting an offspeed pitch, etc.  Essentially keeping the hitter offbalance by pitching them oppositely of what the hitter is expecting.

Go Tribe! :-)

Despite the 3 runs, Fausto's still pitching well. It's a good sign when we can talk about 3ER through 7 innings as a "bad" outing for him. It's a bad sign that this potent offense can't score more than three runs.

Not sure if this was brought up this afternoon (actually had to do some work for a change), but did anyone mention how Shap's assertion during the STO broadcast that we're getting an arm, then not getting an arm may affect team morale, fan attendance, fan morale, etc.? It's generally not a good idea to tease fans, especially those as fickle as Tribe fans. Seems as if this may negate the good vibes generated by the Loften acquisition.

As and far as team morale goes, it's a tough call. On one hand, they make take it as a vote of confidence in their abilities. Or they could be looking forward to getting a valuable piece that may get them a step closer, and see this as a semi-failure.

I don't know if it really affects team morale. they may have been hoping for an arm but I think Lofton was a nice addition and they can look at the Tigers who did nothing and feel good. As was mentioned in a recent
MinorLeagueBall thread, just because those two will return from injury doesn't mean they'll be effective right away, if at all this year.  Those injuries were of a more serious nature, especially Zumaya's, who's also had command issues in the past.

They're far from a certainty they'll return to their previous forms immediately after they return - it could take them a while to get back into form, and there's only two months left in the season right now, and I don't think they're supposed to return for a few more weeks, so they have about 6 weeks to get into form after missing some significant time (in Zumaya's case, all season.)  Look at how long it's taking Westbrook to get back into form, and he's been back for a while and has better command than Zumaya has (albeit lesser stuff.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

True true, but I'm talking about more short-term morale over the next couple of games. I'm not sure whether some our guys have that kind of mental toughness yet to completely ignore those kind of thoughts. Ah whatever, let's rally.

by supermarioelia on Jul 31, 2007 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally, I think their morale might be
affected by the loss of arguably their best bat - Hafner - wondering what has happened to him?

In my opinion, it's different compared to last year when he was out with the hand injury - there, they knew they didn't have him and had to pick up the slack.  But this year, he's here, but not doing close to what he usually does, and I'm starting to think that could be affecting everyone else - perhaps they're trying too hard to compensate, trying to do more than they are capable of doing (like hit 8-run HRs,) etc.

Just a theory and my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Hopefully, Garko's HR did the trick, though lately, many of our runs have come on the HR; without the HR, it seems like we don't score - we're not bunching many hits together, probably because outside of Garko, no one is really blistering hot.  We need to turn that around soon.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but...
down at AAA Buffalo, so far, SS Asdrubal Cabrera is 3-4 with 1 R scored, while LHP Cliff Lee did well the first time I checked, but his overall line wasn't quite as good:

5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 1 WP; 2 G/7 F; 67 S/44 B (3.72)

Lee's line was something like 1 BB/6 K before I refreshed it this last time, but it seems he hit another bump in the road in the 6th, which is why Syracuse leads Buffalo 2-1 in the 7th.

Two other notes:

RHP Matt Miller - 0.2 IP, 2 K; 0/2 IR scored (i.e. got out of Lee's mess unscathed; perhaps this is why the Indians decided not to pay a high price for a reliever - were there many out there that were significantly better than Miller?)

3B Andy Marte - 0-4, 1 K (.242)  I would have strongly considered that rumored Cordero deal if they would have taken Marte, as I am not confident he'll ever live up to his potential.  Plus, either Cabrera (via SS and moving Peralta to 3B) and/or Hodges could help to make Marte expendable within the next year or so.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Looks like a Cliff Lee start from his rookie year. Lots of walks, strikeouts, and 111 pitches in 5.2 innings.

Another minor league note. Coming into tonight, Beau Mills had walked just 4 times (vs. 30 K's) at Lake County. Tonight he walked 5 times (twice intentionally).

This offense is mind-bogglingly, and not in
a good way.

What was Michaels waiting for?  It was right down the middle.

I sure hope the offense wakes up soon - this is the Texas Rangers' pitching staff we're facing; this was Brandon McCarthy, the guy with a 5.52 ERA, the one who's given up 84 in 76.2 IP, the guy who's walked 36 and struck out 46, the guy who's given up 3+ ER in 6 of his last 10 starts, we were facing.

I'm starting to think the offense is becoming more of a concern than the bullpen or the rotation; why does it seem like every season that we go through this prolonged drought where virtually everyone in the lineup goes cold?  I know teams have dry spells, but this dry spell has been going on for two months with almost every hitter?  Is Shelton's job that secure, especially if this offensive funk continues, or might he be replaced for the 2008 season?

Just wondering.

nowhere near the hitter he was a year ago, track record or not.  I just wish they'd figure out what is wrong, because I'm starting to think his total collapse is starting to cause the rest of the team to tense up and try to do more than they're capable of doing.

I don't mind the top part, though I was thinking
more like this:

CF Grady Sizemore
LF Kenny Lofton
C Victor Martinez
1B Ryan Garko
SS Jhonny Peralta
3B Casey Blake
DH Travis Hafner
RF Trot Nixon
2B Josh Barfield

(You could interchange Peralta and Blake if you wish.)

If Gutierrez is playing RF, I would consider putting him where you have him or just ahead or behind Hafner (#7 or #8.)

This may seem drastic, but really, Pronk has struggled for 3 months.  Track record and contract situation don't mean all that much when your primary cleanup hitter is having the worst year of his career, and has not pulled out of that slump for 3 months:

April:  .338/.471/.550
May:    .228/.394/.455
June:   .218/.346/.356
July:   .260/.333/.417 (over last 7 days:  .227/.292/.364)

In my mind, it's time for Wedge to make an adjustment in the offense and put Garko in that cleanup spot; after all, Garko hit cleanup when Hafner was out last year, and he's the hottest Indian of them all right now.  We certainly can't keep letting Hafner hit in that cleanup spot and just "hope" he finds himself - that hasn't worked since he was put back up in the cleanup spot 4-6 weeks ago when he was dropped down before, as shown by his June and July numbers.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Re: I don't mind the top part, though I was thinki
I think you'd bat Hafner in between Peralta and Blake. (Think Right-Left-Right) Garko would at least break up the lefties at the top, and Pronk might see better pitches (maybe?) lower in the lineup.

It might be worth a try.

Re: I don't mind the top part, though I was thinki
I won't argue the top four at this point, but Hafner should be between Garko and Peralta, particularly in that he remains more of an OBP than a power threat.

by Jay on Aug 1, 2007 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point about Pronk!
Hello emd2k3 and Jay,

Yes, that's a good point about the right-left-right, plus the fact Peralta's been swinging at more pitches out of the strike zone than he did earlier in the season, so he too has suffered some prolonged droughts at times.

But certainly, I would definitely put Garko in that #4 spot and put Hafner in the #5 spot, just like Wedge did with Hafner earlier this year.  Like emd2k3 mentioned, perhaps he'd get better pitches to hit and not have as much focus on him if he's not in the cleanup spot.  Plus, he might not press as much if he's not "the" guy in that cleanup spot.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Wow.

The only thing I care about right now is New York will be 3 games back in the wild card after their game goes final.

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
Kudos to you guys who are still endlessly positive about this team. I think I've been one of the "positive team" up to this point, but I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't getting at least a bit worried at this point. And I think if any of you deny that you have at least the tiniest bit of concern, I'd say you're kidding yourselves.

But we'll be fine. This is why we have games every night. No time to mope around.

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
The challenging part for Wedge is to know what buttons to push or not push and when.

If the team continues to play .500 or below, at some point the season will not end happily.

If the team waits too long to make its move, the result could be similar to 2005.

Run scoring averages per month!
Hello everyone,

April: 115 runs in 22 games = 5.23 runs/game
May:   180 runs in 30 games = 6.00 runs/game
June:  136 runs in 28 games = 4.86 runs/game
July:  121 runs in 26 games = 4.65 runs/game

In my mind, this offense hasn't been the same since that comeback victory over Detroit on June 1 - realize that we've only won more than 2 games in a row once since early June, and that was in late June and early July with a 6-game winning streak and winning 8 out of 9.  I agree that it seemed like that was the moment we were going to break out of that 3-week funk in June, but unfortunately, we fell right back into it again and are still in that funk through July, winning 1-2 games, then losing 1-2 games.

In regards to the Yankees and the Mariners, that play is probably not going to cut it for much longer if we want to reach the postseason.  Somehow this team needs to start playing more like it did in April and May, especially offensively.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
There just isn't a way to spin being 2-6 on a homestand positively.  Either they'll right the ship and make the playoffs, or they'll continue playing (more specifically, hitting) the way they are right now and watch them from home with the rest of us.  All the sarcastic cries of the relative position of our atmosphere won't change the fact that we're bleeding games right now.

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
Wedge had been promoting the benefits of having an offday yesterday.  But given their flat performance tonight, it seems that it did them no good.

They have 13 straight games (counting tonight) then they have 3 offdays in the following 8 days.

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
How wise SHapiro is for not getting any help for the bullpen.  He must realize that a fix for the bullpen is futile at this point.  WHat good is a bullpen when the offense can't put them in position to hold any lead.  This team is choking their season right down the drain.  Forget the division and the wild card.

Sorry about the pessimism - I'm VERY FRUSTRATED AT THIS POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Final note on Asdrubal Cabrera!
Hello everyone,

Astrocab finished 4-5 and scored 2 R batting in the #2 spot; he's currently batting .500 (SSS understood.)  His first three hits were line drives, the first two to CF, the third one to LF.  His final hit was a flyball hit to CF.  His one out was a groundout to the pitcher, leading to the force at 2B.

Not a bad way to finish up your 2nd day at AAA.  :-)

Also, Francisco has struck out 7 times, I believe, in 3 games back at Buffalo, as he's still trying to get reacclimated to AAA, it seems.  He's currently hitting .317.

Marte went 1-5, getting his lone single in the 9th with 2 outs, keeping the game alive until C Mike Rose made the final out on a GO to 1B.

As for Lee, that 6th inning was disastrous to his line, and what led to his loss.  (Does this sound familiar?  :-)

Here's what happened to Lee in that 6th:

GO to 3B (Out 1)
BB
BB
Coaching visit to the mound
K of Ford-Griffin (called strike 3 - Out 2)
2B to CF, 2 runs score
BB
Replaced by Miller, who strikes out Sal Fasano.

That unfortunately sounds very much like the Cliff Lee we know - let's hope he can make some progress while at Buffalo.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
We also have to stop with the "at least Detroit is losing" aspect because that's not a postitive mindset for a winning team.  Only losing teams think that way.

This ballclub has an uphill battle with 16 road games this month after the Texas series.  It's not looking good.

Not like we're lighting it up at home or anything...

They'll be fine. One game out with two months to play. Given everything that's happened, this is where you want to be--in the race.

While I agree that where we are is better than many alternatives, this is where you really want to be.

Now, if only we could convince all the other teams in the division to be sub-.500 again.

Re: Game Thread: July 31, 2007
I don't understand when people want fans' attitudes to somehow reflect their perception of a "winning team."

As a fan, I hope the players aren't sitting around saying, hey at least Detroit is losing. We're fine.

But, as a fan again, that's exactly what I'm going to pay attention to. I'm not involved in the process, only the results, and right now the results are still a playoff spot.

Do I want things to get better? Yes, definitely. Do I think I need to ignore the actual standings because it's not a "winning mindset"? No. I think that's ridiculous. Why do I need to maintain any kind of mindset except what keeps me sane?
