Game One Hundred Twenty-Five: Indians 11, Tigers 8

Recap
Box Score
Win Probability Added @ Fangraphs

Highest WPA:

Casey Blake .189
Rafael Betancourt .175
Kenny Lofton .129

Lowest WPA:

Paul Byrd -.250
Jensen Lewis -.098
Rafael Perez -.034

The Indians scored a first inning run off Justin Verlander, but the lead didn't last long. Paul Byrd, who always pitches perched on a tightrope, had to get an extra out thanks to Victor Martinez's misplay of a routine Sean Casey grounder. (The play was scored a hit, which is a joke; if you aren't going to score that an error, there are very few plays that could be considered errors. That is, of course, if the scorer were consistent.) Byrd couldn't get the third out until after Carlos Guillen had crushed a three-run homer. For a team struggling to score more than a couple runs a game, the 3-1 lead might as well have been a 27-run deficit, which would never happen in a baseball game.

Except Justin Verlander happened to have one of his worst outings of the season. Whether it was the humidity (Contrary to recent conditions, it is still August) or just plain bad command, Indian hitters had no problems centering his pitches, scoring four runs in the fourth, and another three in the fifth. By the time Franklin Gutierrez crushed a three-run bomb to left in the fifth, Verlander had already left. The good news, beyond having a five-run lead, was that the Indians would be facing the back end of the bullpen rather than Fernando Rodney or Joel Zumaya. And they needed those cushy relievers later in the game.

Paul Byrd, buoyed by the unexpected offensive outburst, retired the Tigers quickly in the fourth  and fifth innings. But with equal rapidity, he lost it in the sixth, bringing in Rafael Perez an inning earlier than Eric Wedge would have hoped. And Byrd's early exit also played a role in future events. Rafael Betancourt had to clean up a mess in the seventh, and in a two-run game, retired Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen for the first save of the evening.

The second save came in the ninth, after Jensen Lewis couldn't hold a five-run lead. I guess it's a self-fulfilling prophecy that Lewis would have trouble in a situation like that, since he's made so few appearances when the game's been in doubt. Joe Borowski, fresh off a blown save on Sunday, retired Guillen and Rodriguez (in between shots of Eric Wedge trying to look disinterested) to close the game and assure the Indians of leaving Detroit in first place.

Next Up: Westbrook vs. Robertson, 1:05 PM

Zing.

I'd like to see Wedge come right back with Lewis tomorrow.  I think it's just some rust he has to shake off.

Re: Game One Hundred Twenty-Five
agreed, when was the last time he pitched for goodness sake.  plus he was throwing strikes - what you do with a big lead. some good hitters got some hits.  i'm fine with tonight, since we won of course.

And it frees up my evening from the frustrations of being an Indians fan.

Re: Thursday
True and true...the frustrations thing is definitely true, haha!!!

But, it is only enjoyable if it is a win...

Just a slight correction!
Hello Ryan,

Great round-up; just one slight correction:

"By the time Franklin Gutierrez crushed a three-run bomb to right in the fifth..."

That should be

"...bomb to left in the fifth."

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Just a slight correction!
Also,

disinterested: unbiased by personal interest or advantage; not influenced by selfish motives: a disinterested decision by the referee.

vs.

uninterested: having or showing no feeling of interest; indifferent.

Re: Just a slight correction!
"Lack of interest; indifference" is a secondary definition of disinterested, although it appears that most experts think that definition should apply only to uninterested. I like the former word better.

Me too. I love a Thursday afternoon game, it makes time fly (though it makes me WAY less productive).

Re: Game One Hundred Twenty-Five: Indians 11, Tige
Verlander hasn't been his 2006 self since June but, still, you have to hope this game wasn't just a bear rally by the Indians offense.  If the Tribe can start huffing and puffing in the general direction of regular run production, I'll be ecstatic.  Even without great run production, just winning enough games to stay in first (as they have done) will keep me happy.  Time starts becoming your bestest friend pretty darn soon, if you are on top in the standings anyway.

I'm going to refer to Gutz as "Cow Bell" for today's game.  As in, "More Cow Bell!"

Wedgehead
I am befuddled as to why Wedge continues to nick ABs from Gutz in favor of low-ceiling guys that have no prayer of injecting the kind of spark that Gutz did last night.  And he's a better defender to boot.  Hopefully this donkey kick to the head of a performance can right Wedge's teeter-totter.

Re: Game One Hundred
Good win. Today feels big but it's nice to know we leave with the lead, regardless. Also, us winning the Byrd game is just good payback for losing the Carmona game.

Re: Game One Hundred
also the verlander game.

coming into the series, i figured we'd win game one, loose game two, then hope for gravy in game 3.  we're still in that boat.  carmona rested the bullpen completely (coming off an off day i know) so his effort was not all for naught.

so, let's get some gravy (and some soup) today now.

Re: Game One Hundred Twenty-Five: Indians 11, Tige
Vic, Hafner, Garko #3-5, and Gomez giving Cabrera a rest against the lefty.

Also, Pudge not starting for Detroit.

Re: Game One Hundred Twenty-Five: Indians 11, Tige
Are Astro's #'s historically worse against lefties, even though he's a switch hitter?

I mean, I don't care he's not playing and Gomez is, but I don't like the excuse of "because a lefty is pitching" for a switch-hitter to not play.

'drub had almost no R/L split in Akron this season

Re: Game One Hundred Twenty-Five: Indians 11, Tige
Where do you find minor league split stats?  Thanks.

by mplswahoo on Aug 23, 2007 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game One Hundred Twenty-Five: Indians 11, Tige
His player page on MiLB.com provides some splits.  MinorLeagueSplits.com has most the splits for his minor league career.  FirstInning, a newer site, also has some splits and extended statistics.

Re: Game One Hundred Twenty-Five: Indians 11, Tige
I get your point.  Even though Drubs is a switch-hitter and has, according to APV below, no meaningful lefty split, I still suspect that Wedge chose to give Drubs the day off because a lefty is starting.  Not an excuse, just speculation.

Who knows though, Gomez doesn't have horrible split numbers either, but there is a slight drop against the lefties this year:

vs righty: .312/.339/.413
vs lefty:  .292/.228/.361

I am going to start putting on my Indians greasepaint on face in a minute. I'm not sure how this will go over at work.
