Just remember, a win equals a split, which would make me happy despite our crappy play of late.

It'd also mean remaining in sole possession of first place no matter what. Gutz will play today which could help us out in key situations.

Re: Game Thread: August 6, 2007
Probably wishful thinking, indeed.  I witnessed first-hand Trot's ABs in the first two games at the Metrodome this series, as well as his defensive play last week (especially last Sunday) at the Jake . . . and although I understand Trot's "role" on this team, seeing his name in the lineup card truly makes me cringe . . . regardless of his OBP.

I know he's put together a semi-decent stretch of late for him, and gotten a few timely/well-placed hits.  But he's still not putting up consistent, good ABs, and he certainly doesn't help us, on the field, in any other facet of the game.  And, it's costing us in close games.  Unfortunately, he has done nothing to suggest that his continued regular presence in the lineup will help us more than it hurts us.

I'm frustrated by it . . . but I will stop now.

Re: Game Thread: August 6, 2007
Well we all agree that Gutz should start everyday just because the other option is Trot Nixon.  For me specifically, I wish Gutz would perform to a level that leaves the coaching staff no choice.  We're all a little smitten with him, but it's because most of his at-bats come against LHP.  His numbers against righties are pretty poor.  Does his defense make up for it?

Ah, what's the point.  In the end I think we all vote for Gutierrez.  Discussion is moot.

Walks are troubling no matter what level you're at. I don't think he's going to win back his spot this year. He may be in the bullpen once September rolls around, but bringing him back up to start is too big of a risk.

Also, my thoughts that Gutz was playing was just a hopeful guess based on his lack of playing time the past few days. I don't think there's any way that Wedge can sit him with the team slumping like this.

Re: Game Thread: August 6, 2007
Well, it's not as if Wedge has all that many options for the #5 hole with Garko sitting/Byrd pitching.  But I agree, Blakes numbers with RISP remain disturbing, especially when he is put in a run-producing spot in the order.  Hafner, for all is his struggles, is unlikely to get a day off vs. a RHP, so that leaves Garko on the bench.

Could be worse . . . could be Trot still hitting #5.

Re: Game Thread: August 6, 2007
I swear, the general opinion of Casey Blake on this site seems to swing wildly between he's fantastic and he's absolutely terrible.  Can't we just accept that he's a fairly high achieving, limited ceiling guy who can be useful when used correctly.

by APV on Aug 6, 2007 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: August 6, 2007
I agree wholeheartedly - I think my general position has been that Blake is a fairly high achieving, limited ceiling guy, who is not being used correctly when put in traditional run-producing positions (i.e., #3,4,5) in the lineup.

Ideally, he'd be batting #7 or #8 every game.  That said, all teams have flaws, and with respect to the Indians, that means Blake is often put in batting order slots that might be suboptimal for him and for us.

Generally, though, I think we're in pretty good agreement.

I'm watching the Detroit game on mlb.tv before the Indians start.  Detroit has the 2-1 lead after three.

Anyway, the Detroit guys are talking about scoring runs.  They point out that Sheffield leads the team in that particular category.  "That's because he walks so much," the first guy says.  "You'll score a lot when you're on base all the time," adds the second guy.

What I wouldn't give for Manning/Underwood to say something like that.  Just once.

I think some forget or overlook how good Carmona has been this year, and I think my quick analysis showed that he's been better than Matsuzaka in 2007.  Matsuzaka's been good, but Carmona's been better.

And, Carmona won't turn 24 until December, while Matsuzaka is about to turn 27 next month.  Another advantage for Carmona.  :-)

by supermarioelia on Aug 6, 2007 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

That was one of the few times he's actually
pitched well, and like we often do, struggle against guys we haven't seen before.  Plus, that was part of that sweep we had in New York early in the year when we were going well as a team, especially offensively.

Hello Roger Dorn,

That was just 1/5 starts in where he has given up 3 ERs or less, out of 12 total starts (5/12 = 41.7%.)

By comparison, Cliff Lee has given 3 ER or less in 7/16 starts (43.8%,) so in a way, Igawa has actually been worse than Lee (and his WHIP is higher than Lee's also - 1.68 to Lee's 1.53,) so, even with Igawa beating us, I'm still glad we didn't spend all that money on him - I have my doubts he'll ever be an effective starter, as Igawa is only one year younger than Lee (28 vs. Lee about to be 29.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Re: Game Thread: August 6, 2007
I was wondering the same thing, but all I've got to go on is Hamilton's reactions and subsequent descriptions/commentary.  He was very critical of the Nixon play in Sabathia's start but said that Lofton had no chance on the ball last night.

Re: Game Thread: August 6, 2007

Let's not forget that Tom Hamilton is President of the Kenny Lofton Fan Club

by macasson on Aug 6, 2007 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Just my opinion, but the ball over Kenny's head
was quite a distance away from him, as I don't think Lofton was playing that deep because Alexi Casilla has virtually no power, and was batting left-handed.

If Lofton had gotten a great jump on that ball and had the astroburners on from the start, he MIGHT have had a shot at that ball, but even then, I still think it would have taken a great catch to be able to reach that ball.

The ball over Nixon's head wasn't that far behind him; if he had been playing back (Nixon's playing in so close surprised Twins hitter Mike Redmond) or if one of the other OFers had been playing there (or even Blake,) chances are, that ball would have been caught in my opinion.

Mind you, I'm not a Lofton apologist, but I really don't think Lofton had much chance to catch that ball; it probably surprised all the Indians that Casilla was able to get that ball over Lofton's head that far, going the opposite way no less, but I do recall that that high fastball was up and away, and pretty much straight, allowing Casilla to get a solid swing on that ball.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

by nickjs21 on Aug 6, 2007 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Understood about the career stats, but then
again, looking at his career stats from past years, you wouldn't think he'd be doing what's he doing this year either, so the career stats don't hold quite as much weight - Pronk is "off" the whole year, throwing career stats from past years in doubt in my opinion because those stats wouldn't have told you he was going to have a year like this, yet he's having this "off" year.

Same thing with his career stats against Silva (which are pretty good); granted, I understand why Wedge left him in there tonight, but again, just because Hafner's hit Silva in the past doesn't guarantee he will hit him that well in this "off" year of his when he hasn't been hitting pitchers he would normally hit.

(It certainly helps though to hit your first career HR off of Silva, as Pronk did tonight.)

As for not benching Travis Hafner, under normal circumstances, I might agree with you, but when you're 7-34, .206, in your last 10 games (before Monday's game,) and have hit under your career norms for three straight months:

April: .338/.471/.550
May: .228/.394/.455
June: .218/.346/.356
July: .250/.321/.400

and in case you're wondering,

August: .167/.375/.250 (before Monday's game)

I don't think Pronk should be immune from sitting out for a few games to clear his head.  Let's face it, giving him extended playing time is not helping him come out of his season-long funk (and no, hitting 1 HR isn't convincing me the "old" Pronk is back; he needs to be far more consistent before I even think that); perhaps a new approach of sitting him when Byrd starts (or at least every once in a while when Byrd starts) should be tried.

I was partly jesting when I wrote that initial post, but seriously, it wouldn't hurt to sit Pronk on occasion when Byrd pitches and Shoppach is catching, especially since Garko is the far hotter bat - why should he automatically sit when playing Pronk regularly isn't helping him or the Indians' offense?  And as for career stats, you can see that that doesn't have any bearing on his performance this year because his track record didn't predict this.

Therefore, I don't think sitting Pronk every so often with Byrd pitching would be a bad thing if he continues to struggle and Garko continues to stay hot.  It was good to see Pronk hit one out, but that HR alone is not going to convince me he's back yet; that pitch was a meatball that should be crushed, and fortunately, Hafner did just that.  Let's hope it's the start of Pronk returning to his norms, which would help this offense become more consistent and be able to score the 5-6 runs/game on average they were scoring in April and May.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Exactly.  Hank Azaria cameo, too.

Jason Bateman and Gary Cole tear it up pretty good in that movie, too, apparently almost entirely improvised.

Alright I'll go ahead and explain for the next time that Byrd throws an unbelievable start at home. Tourtiere is a meat pie served in Quebec which back in day was served with actual pigeon meat.

Hence, we have Byrd Pie.

Seattle has been outscored by their opponents, 529-526.

Great game tonight!
Hello everyone,

Big win and a great game by Byrd - we really needed that pitching performance.

The offense was a bit better; it was encouraging to see some of these hitters go the other way and not look to crush the ball by pulling it - they were just nice, easy swings.  Personally, I hope we see more of that; some of these guys look like they're trying to hit 8-run HRs.  They just need to relax and stay within themselves.

As for Pronk, I hope this gets him going; that was a meatball pitch, but fortunately, he didn't miss it, which he has done on a few occasions this year.  I'm just hopeful this can get him on some sort of roll.

Also, a friend of mine again noticed that it seemed Pronk didn't lift up his leg before the pitch came that he hit the HR on.  Did Pronk always lift his leg before the pitch when he was going well in past years?  We don't seem to recall him doing that.  Could that be the source (or one source) of his problems?  Just curious.

Let's hope the Indians can play well in Chicago and at least win the series; who knows if the D'Rays can beat the Tigers, though I'm hopeful they can take a game or two.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Haha this actually made me laugh. Hilarious mental image right there.

by supermarioelia on Aug 7, 2007 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd think we be able to catch that flyball that
Crawford let drop - supposedly, he thought he heard a call for the ball.  In that situation, don't you take the aggressive approach and go for the ball, and if someone crashes into you, so be it?  Better to be safe than sorry in that situation, and in this instance, being safe to me would be going for the ball and ask questions later.  :-)

I don't know - just my opinion, but Crawford's mental acumen for the game seems to be lacking at times, as this isn't the first time he's made a bone-headed play.  If his mental acumen were a little sharper and he was a little more patient, he might be the type of player who is in Sizemore's category, but personally (and I am biased,) I think he's a peg or two below Sizemore, even though he has comparable tools.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)
