Re: Game Thread: September 5, 2007
Starting lineup looks like.. well, just like last night's starting lineup except Gutz slides over to left with Michaels going to right.

Heintz is back behind the plate again for the Twins, though Mauer is apparently still only 50% despite catching an inning yesterday and Redmond probably won't be available today because "it felt like [his] finger fell off."

Re: Game Thread: September 5, 2007
Why has Wedge been moving Gutz to LF?  He did it to Francisco in RF against Santana and now Michaels today.  What am I missing in him doing that?  I'm pretty certain Gutz has the best arm out there right now and covers the most ground.  I'm certain (hopeful, at least) of a reason, but I'm just not seeing it.  Keeping everybody fresh at both corner positions?

Re: Game Thread: September 5, 2007
Left field in the Metrodome is much more spacious than right field is. The only reason Gut was in right field yesterday was because of Lofton's arm (or lack thereof).

Re: Game Thread: September 5, 2007
Should be a nice matchup.  Carmona's coming off two less than stellar starts while Baker pitched a near perfect game his last time out.  Both pitchers have fared well against the other team in 2007.

During the pitching change, I looked up pitcher's VORP for the year.  In the AL Sabathia is leading, and 4th overall behind Peavy, Penny, and Webb.  If we eliminate all pitchers from non-contending teams (which I don't necessarily agree with), your top 4 Cy Young candidates in order of VORP are:  CC, Escobar, Beckett, Fuasto (not counting today's start).

Just, I don't know, food for thought.

CC has a good chance because he's no slouch in "traditional" categories either.  He leads the league in IP, he has a lot of strikeouts, he walks very little, and he still wins a lot.  Plus, the Indians are leading their division.  We'll just have to see.  I don't take too much stock in individual awards, but it would be nice.

I touched on this yesterday.  If the Angels take the best record and we settle in at 2nd, and meanwhile the Mariners can leapfrog the Yankees ... There you go, ideal opening round machup.

Boston vs. Angels (we'd only face one)
Indians vs. Mariners (come on, now)

I'd like to see an Indians/Mariners playoff series. It's kind of neo-classical.

With Kenny Lofton getting bold on a wild pitch ...

The more I think about it, the more I think it would be an even better matchup to neutralize Boston/LA's pitching depth in a short series and face Seattle in a 7-game series.  Either way, I want to play Seattle.

Living in the NYC area, you heard discussions like this a lot regarding the Mets not playing the Braves in the post-season a couple of years ago.  My thought is, who cares!  If the other team didn't play well enough to play against you, too bad for them.

This is not, thankfully, the same team that was swept by the Yankess last month ... and the Yankess are not necessarily playing as well as they did at that time either.  Nevertheless, I would not mind a situation where the Indians did not have to play the Yankees because the Yankees didn't make the post-season.

man, that does sound good... but i'd rather have them miss the playoffs entirely, panic, fire Torre and Cashman, and have the new guys trade Chamberlain and Hughes to the Marlins for Dontrelle Willis.

also, if no one in New York is bothering to watch while Sabathia wins seven games this postseason, maybe they won't notice that his contract is up after next year.

Told my Boston friend the same thing back in 2004.  You have to be willing to go slay the dragon.  The Yankees aren't any better than the Red Sox or Angels anyway.

Just think -- the Yankees have lost more postseason games this decade than any other team.  The Yankees have lost their last three postseason series, and six out of their last nine dating back to Arizona 2001.

The Yankees of this decade -- the Giambi Yankees if you will -- are among the most accomplished postseason chokers in baseball history.

In other news, it looks like A-Rod may have a boo-boo.  Now that would be a shame.

On the other hand, a caller to WFAN in New York commented that the Yankees ought to simply invest in an MRI machine.  That way, instead of sending Roger Clemmons for an MRI after a bad performance like the one he had the other day, they could just take the MRI's before the game so they would know if he should start or not.

Tigers are sitting both Ordonez and Inge tonight, and have seen just 18 pitches in the first 2 innings (7 AB).  Also it looks like they haven't made many callups, as the CBS Sportsline play-by-play site only shows 6 hitters on their bench.  These don't sound to me like the actions of a team fighting for it's playoff life.

White Sox lead 1-0 in the 3rd on a HR by Richar off Slimeball Rogers.

I just opened the Tigers game on Mlb.tv, and they were previewing the postgame show: "...Plus, is it too late for the Tigers to make a playoff push?  We'll discuss all that and more tonight on Tigers Postgame."

One of the announcers answered that question with, "Not at all.  3.5 games isn't much, not with the time we have left."  So the Tigers announcers are now solely focusing on the wild card.  I like this.

Re: Game Thread: September 5, 2007
As much as I'd like to agree, here's a quote from today's "Notes" on Indians.com:

"In 2005, [The Indians] were 9 1/2 games back of the White Sox after 138 games (the number they've played, to this point). Less than three weeks later, with 155 games played, they had closed the gap to just 1 1/2 games."

A seven (or even, hopefully, eight) game lead is "surmountable."  Given the way the Indians and Tigers have been playing of late, it's less than likely, but there's no reason to pop the champagne corks just yet.

Re: Game Thread: September 5, 2007
There are, of course, hundreds of examples, possibly thousands of teams not making up eight games over 17, each and every season.  It's noteworthy when it happens precisely because it's so rare.

All we're really saying here is, 97% is not 100%.  That point scarcely needs to be made, though.
