Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?

Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing very well!  :-)

It's not official yet, but according to some threads on MinorLeagueBall, based mostly on a report made in the Seattle Times' Mariners blog by writer Geoff Baker, there is growing speculation that a Erik-Bedard-Adam Jones (and others) deal could come down soon between Baltimore and Seattle.

The main reason why is because of an interview that was done with Adam Jones, who was told to leave his Venezuelan Winter League team and report to Baltimore for a physical on Monday.

Baker also points out that players are not usually removed from a Winter League Team during their postseason unless it's for a very good reason, like an injury or a trade, and if Jones was injured, that likely would be reported, so an imminent trade seems likely, as Jones, Mariners' spokesperson Tim Hevly, and the Venezuelan Winter League team's manager, Luis Soto, have all confirmed that Jones is returning to the U.S., with Jones and Soto both saying he's reporting to Baltimore for a physical on Monday.

You can read more about that here.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Bavasi is a moron. Adam Jones is going to be more valuable than Erik Bedard this year let alone all his other arbitration years.

I could be wrong. I doubt it, though.

I'd bookmark Lookout Landing for a while to see the fan reaction.

Breakdown:  Bedard is really good, but Adam Jones carried all our hopes and dreams in a tote.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Bavasi seems so consumed with acquiring a top-flight pitcher that his brain cells are misfiring.  Everyone living in the Seattle metro area should soon be on the lookout for the remnants of Bill's exploding brain.

What does Bedard's contract status look like?

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Two years from free agency, no 2008 contract as of yet (arbitration pending).

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
I don't think it's a horrible move for Seattle provided they can retain him past the next two years. The main issue with Bedard in my mind is injury history.

This deal for the Mariners strikes me as similar to the Swisher trade for the White Sox. Probably a nice move for this year alone, but is it enough to put them over the top? I think we would all agree probably not in both cases. Jones is a beast.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
I realize it's a little nit-picky with a talent that prodigious, but can Jones take a walk? I love home runs, but someone would have to explain to me that he's not just Frank Gutz without the injury issues.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Gootz is not in the same league with A-Jo.  They had similar seasons at age 19, but Jones smokes him in comparing age 20 and 21 seasons.  Jones' numbers in Triple-A at age 21 are comparable to Pronk's -- except that Pronk was 25.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
But Bedard is only under Seattle's control through 2009, while Swisher was under contract for five years. If the M's can sign Bedard long-term, then you have a point.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
I agree. I think I was trying to say by assuming they retain him past the first two years in my first paragraph, which is not a great assumption in the first place.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
If I'm Bedard, I'm definitely taking a wait-and-see approach.  Then again, with his injury history, he's not in the best position to turn down a gigantic bag of money.

At my studio we sometimes work with this older gentleman, jazz player, played with all the greats back in the 40's and 50's.  And as I'm trying to make sure everybody is happy and comfortable, I'll say, "Is there anything I can get you?"

And every single time he says:  "How 'bout a grocery bag full of cash?"

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
It is interesting that the Athletics traded Swisher just a few weeks after he'd signed away his first two years of free agency.  He seems satisfied with the situation, but it's hard to see the Indians ever doing something like this.  But maybe that's why Shapiro gets better deals than Beane.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
If the Mariners make this trade they have a legitimate chance of winning the Wild Card and having a competitive team for the next few years.  Bavasi is a much better GM they we want to credit him for.  If they can sign Bedard to a long term contract assuming his and King Felix's health they will have a very good team for a long time.

No reason to assume Bedard's health.

It's like assuming Cliff Lee's curveball.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Dude, aren't you always saying you need big bats too. Well by all accounts they gave up someone with a legitimate shot at being a star with the bat. Surely that might outweight the runs saved every 5th day.....if Bedard actually pitches every 5th day of course

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
I'd love to hear one good signing or move Bavasi has made. Just a single one.

Bavasi has signed:
Raul Ibanez
Richie Sexson
Adrian Beltre
Jarrod Washburn
Scott Spezio
Rich Aurilia
Carl Everett
Matt Lawton
Jeff Weaver

Trades:
Freddy Garcia for Miguel Olivo, Jeremy Reed, and Mike Morse. (ehhh, I think I'm ok with this one)

Shin-soo Choo and Droobs for Benuardo
Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez.

Ooof, that's some rough transactions.

You forgot Vidro.  The guy took a 2B salary dump and turned him into an NL-caliber DH.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
What's wrong with Ibanez?

by mkwng @ Let's Go Tribe! on Jan 29, 2008 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
I mean, nothing is WRONG with Ibanez, but he SUCKS defensively (as in, would be a DH on 13 other teams). Also, he doesn't really hit that much for a LF (~813 OPS).

His highest comp? Kevin Millar (934).

After looking at the numbers, I'd say that he's ok. He's ok, but terrible defense and unlikely to out hit Delichales.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Not that I've given it a great deal of thought, but I think I'd take Ibanez over Dellichaels.  I think Ibanez might well outproduce them and is making about the same salary -- but he's healthy (avg 157 games last three years) and only takes up one spot on the roster.

We've got Marte and eventually Choo to squeeze onto the roster, and Francisco avaiable for depth.  So we basically could use a free roster spot a lot more than we're using the extra warm body.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Obviously, having one player at ~800 OPS is better than two combining to make an ~800 OPS player. I totally agree, but in the context of Mr. Bavasi, signing Ibanez to an extension is peeing in the proverbial crap-trade-sign ocean.

What is the current status on Choo? Is he going to be ready for spring training?

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Adrian Beltre is good.  We can't give Bavasi the credit however because he thought he was getting a completely different kind of player.  He's not fantastic, but as a fielder he's dynamite with above-average offense.  As far as players with bad OBPs go, he's my favorite.

I'll take Raul if he comes with Adrian.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
I too like Beltre and if my team had a boat load of cash to spend, wouldn't mind that he is on my team.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Good? That may be a bit of a reach. Beltre is pretty much league average with the bat at what is generally considered a position that should provide some offense. Is his defense really enough to make up for the fact that he hits just a little worse than Sean Casey?
I swear, next year is it.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
3rd base isn't all it's cracked up to be offensively. Beltre is better than average there even with the low OBP.

And I always assumed he was a stud defensively -- I love watching him play the hot corner -- but the stats say otherwise:

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
Also, I just checked the Mariners 2007:

They won 88 games and finished 6 back; however, they scored 794 runs while giving up 813 for a Exp1 of 79-83. Ouch. 9 games over pythag.

The Angles also slightly outperformed their Exp1, looking like a 90-72 team, or 11 games up.

Yeah after looking at that, even if Bedard stays healthy and has another Cy caliber season, they're still going to finish ~5 GB.

While the apples and oranges might not be THAT far off, it's a really dumb trade in the context of where the Mariners are going to finish.

Re: Will Bedard be a Mariner soon?
I'm hearing a rumor from a sports handicapping website that while the trade talks have stalled, the Angels and Indians have entered as players.

Source claims to be the Seattle Times, but there's no link and I can't find any more mention of this other than MLBTR says the Indians could be a possibility.

You know Selig? Ombudsman.
