Heath Bell does not care for ESPN

Specifically, Baseball Tonight. For some reason, he seems to think they focus more on the big East Coast teams. Hm. By the way, feel free to use my tag for all future Manny Ramirez/Jim Thome coming back to Cleveland threads.

Yes, it's time for the Indians to panic

The author's headline, not mine. "So before burying the Indians with more than 95 percent of their season to play, allow us to present a few facts: Over the past 25 full seasons, 45 teams in Major League Baseball have begun their seasons 1-6 or worse. Of those 45, eight have finished the year with a better-than-average record. And of those eight, only one – the 2007 Philadelphia Phillies – made the postseason. In which they were promptly swept."

Why the newspaper industry shakeout isn't all bad

"Here is the problem," writes the eminently clueless Mike Perry for The Morning Journal. "As far as pitching goes what you see on the roster now is what the Indians are stuck with. There is no Phil Hughes, Clay Bucholz or David Price in the Indians system ..." Perry is apparently unaware of a pitcher in the Indians system who: (a) was a first-round draft pick just a few years ago. (b) was the best pitcher in the Indians organization last season, arguably the best in all of Double-A and one of the best in Triple-A. (c) is rated as the third-best pitcher the Indians have right now, behind only Lee and Carmona, by the leading projection systems. (d) would be rated about the same way by most scouts. (e) was the Opening Day starter for the Indians top farm team in Columbus. So Perry has written an entire column about the fact that the Indians don't have a certain type of player ... when in fact, the Indians have exactly that player. He might as well write: "You know, the problem is that the Indians don't have a closer who can get strikeouts." Or how about: "If only the Indians had a center fielder who was a Gold Glover and could also hit 30 home runs." The newspaper industry is in turmoil, and a lot of people are going to lose their jobs if they haven't lost them already. In this guy's case, that will actually be a good thing.
