9/21 Game Thread

Indians at White Sox, 8:05 PM

Scott Elarton (10-7, 4.57 ERA) vs Jon Garland (17-9, 3.41 ERA)

The all-important third game of the series. The Indians are starting to hit very well as a team, but the bullpen's starting to look a bit thin. The losses of Matt Miller and Arthur Rhodes showed last night; Howry had to come in an inning early, and when he had a bad outing, it cascaded from there.

Stepping back a bit, the first two games of the series have been exceptional from a baseball fan's point of view. There has been no point thus far where either team was beyond striking distance of winning, and that makes for great baseball. There's been clutch hits, home runs, mental errors, defensive gems, and a constant barrage of intrigue and intensity that you normally don't see until the playoffs actually start.

As for me, I'd like nothing else than to see a nice boring five-run victory tonight.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Is anyone else worried that Victor may just break down soon? I honestly cant remember the last time he got a days rest.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Stuck watching on MLB.tv, which means listening to Hawk and DJ do the play-by-play.  Fortunately Hawk stops talking when the Sox are losing.

Victor will get a day or maybe two off against the Royals; we'll need him against D-Rays and the Sox.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
I found a funny link to Yahoo, its a story about how closely the characters in Major League (the movie) relate to the 2005 Tribe.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Meh. Didn't the Plain Dealer do the whole "Major League" comparison for their Indians preview? Of course, it was in 2003 or 2004, so they were off (again).

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Can you make some more wishes Ryan?

Also, Howry managed to breeze through 1 and 2/3 innings on 21 pitches--so I'm not worried.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Well, the game wasn't boring...until Pronk hit his first homer. And I was off by three runs, but I don't mind being wrong in this case....

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Victor has had plenty of days off.  Tribe didn't play on the 1st and 15th, Victor didn't play on the 8th, and Bard also replaced Victor late in three games in the past two weeks, including last night.  Wedge obviously is watching this.  Tribe's next and final off-day is on Monday, and I won't be surprised if Victor starts all ten final games.  And I'm sure that's what he's planning on doing, too.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Re: Garko ... are you nuts?  Start a rookie and mediocre fielder in the middle of a pennant race?  It's not like he was totally destroying the ball in AAA, either.  Still a work in progress.  Next year.

Hernandez's unbelievably bad hitting has flown way under the radar this year, you're right, but despite the huge mistake last night, he has made some great heads-up plays in the field.  Remember last week's run-down between 3B and home, which Hernandez executed by himself, without throwing the ball, even though he was playing 1B?  Unbelievably great play.  So I cut him some slack.  We signed him as a bench player, anyway, he's only gotten all those PAs because two or three of our hitters suck.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
total agreement on using howry in the 9th. WHY?  up 8 runs, why not even save the bullpen entirely and turn it over to a guy like jason davis?  the sox turned to a guy who probably wouldn't be on their post season roster. sure that guy made pronk a 30HR/100RBI guy all in one swing, but the indians should have turned to someone who needs a good inning, JD, Cabrera, sauerbeck,  etc.

i'd actually think Cabrera should get that call especially with the 8 run cushion Wedge is very reluctant to use him in really any situation, which is bothersome.  he seems very composed, and his numbers have been stellar. he has really stepped into the big shoes that matt miller left.
unfortunately, nobody has taken Rhodes' place. i just don't have the confidence in riske or betancourt like i did with arthur. that would be huge if he could come back to the team. best of luck to his daughter if that's the case.

but tonight is not about that, it's about pronk finding his swing, and elarton pitching lights out.

there was some talk with the off day after this weekend of swapping lee and elarton in the rotation to set it up to give Lee the start on the last day of the season where he'd otherwise miss the last series entirely, but now i'm convinced that i feel safe with elarton out there. tonight was a big game, probably the most high pressure of the season and on the road, and elarton was fantastic. plus if we wind up in a tiebreaker game we can have lee for that.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
Who is everyone pulling for in the east? personally i'd rather face the yankees under the assumption that good pitching beats good hitting. we saw that tonight and all season from the tribe.

i'd prefer to go against the yankees jumbled, old, rattled pitching than have to twice face a schilling who hasn't tired himself out this season with too many innings, indian killer wells and that damn knuckleball.

the yankees have the bats while the sox pretty much depend on ortiz and manny. it's a tough call, and hopefully only 1 make the playoffs.

after seeing how we can handle the white sox and oakland recently, i'd like to see them both make the playoffs with the tribe.

Re: 9/21 Game Thread
The Yankees are tougher.  Their pitching is coming together -- don't ask me how -- and the heart of their order is more formidable -- don't ask me how -- and man for man, I'll take the Yankees lineup, right at this moment.  I always root against the Yankees anyway, but regardless I'd rather deal with Boston.
