The Scenarios
Boston just won, so the Red Sox remain in a tie with the Indians. However, if the Indians can take two out of three, they at the very worst will be playing on Monday. Here's the possibilities:
Outcome 1: Indians go 0-3 (93 wins)
- If the Red Sox (96) sweep the Yankees (94), the Indians miss the playoffs.
- If the Red Sox (95) win 2 of three from the Yankees (95), the Indians miss the playoffs.
- If the Yankees (96) win 2 of three from the Red Sox (94), the Indians miss the playoffs.
- If the Yankees (97) sweep the Red Sox (93), the Indians travel to Boston for a one-game playoff.
- If the Red Sox (96) sweep the Yankees (94), the Indians host the Yankees for a one-game playoff.
- If the Red Sox (95) win 2 of three from the Yankees (95), the Indians miss the playoffs.
- If the Yankees (96) win 2 of three from the Red Sox (94), the Indians travel to Boston for a one-game playoff.
- If the Yankees (97) sweep the Red Sox (93), the Indians make the playoffs.
- If the Red Sox (96) sweep the Yankees (94), the Indians make the playoffs.
- If the Red Sox (95) win 2 of three from the Yankees (95), the Indians become part of a three-team playoff; the Red Sox and Yankees play on Monday to determine the AL East winner, and the loser plays the Indians on Tuesday to determine the Wild Card winner.
- If the Yankees (96) win 2 of three from the Red Sox (94), the Indians make the playoffs
- If the Yankees (97) sweep the Red Sox (93), the Indians make the playoffs.
The Indians make the playoffs no matter what happens between Boston and New York.
So the worst outcome in the BOS-NYY series is Boston winning 2 out of 3.

Re: The Scenarios
The good thing is that if the Indians do make the playoffs, they'll do it at the expense of the Red Sox or Yankees. That's a no-lose proposition as far as I'm concerned.

Re: The Scenarios
looks like we are going to have to sweep chicago because it's tough to really imagine the yankees going into boston and sweeping or even winning 2 out of 3. but it could happen. they're playing so differently now. the yankees have great starting pitching all of a sudden so they get ahead early and the bullpen slips and it gets close but then they put in rivera and game over. the sox have close games and then big fat papi or manny have a late inning clutch hit. so that series is going to be interesting, and yes it's terrible having to root for a yanks sweep.
it would not be ideal of course, but not so awful if the tribe took 2 of 3 and the sox took 2 of 3. because either team the indians face would be pretty spent. hopefully they can both burn up their bullpens this weekend and then in a 1 game playoff as well, and be drained by the time they played the tribe.
hopefully the white sox will be too relaxed and we can get our wins in front of sold out jacobs field crowds
