Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Game Thread(s): September 12, 2006

Kansas City at Cleveland, 7:05 PM (STO)

Starting Pitchers:

Cleveland: Jeremy Sowers (7-3, 3.35 ERA)
Kansas City: Runelvys Hernandez (5-9, 6.39 ERA)

Portland at Akron, 7:05 PM
Eastern League Championship, Game 1

Starting Pitchers:

Akron: Adam Miller (15-6, 2.75 ERA)
Portland: Devern Hansack (8-7, 3.26 ERA)

First of all, congrats to the Kinston Indians: they won the Mills Cup with an extra-inning win last night. The K-Tribe had a fantastic regular season, going a combined 85-63. This championship is Kinston's second in three years.

The Aeros look to win their second consecutive Eastern League title, and will send Adam Miller to the mound for Game 1. He could have been facing Phillip Hughes, the Eastern League's other top pitching prospect, but Trenton lost to the underdog Sea Dogs in the first round.

I said it last week and looks like I was right *pats self on back* They take Sowers out of his normal 4-day rest and routine and give his start to Carmona IN Chicago. Should have given that start to Sowers and let Carmona start here against AAA Royals. Ugh.

I agree with you wholeheartedly!
Hello ASP and portlandtribefan,

I agree with you wholeheartedly; there was no good reason to mess up Sowers' rest - as one could tell, he wasn't laboring on 4 days rest; there was no reason to shift him out of his regular routine.  Plus, as you stated, Carmona would have made his first return start against the Royals, arguably an easier assignment than the White Sox.  As for pitching at Jacobs Field and maybe the fans getting on him, he's going to have to learn to pitch at Jacobs Field sometime if he remains an Indian, so what better time to start against one of the worst teams in baseball?

Re: I agree with you wholeheartedly!
Wedge could write a book about his handling of Carmona.  "How to Completely Destroy the Psyche of a Talented Young Pitcher" by Eric Wedge.  Not a big seller as there is not too much demand for this.

by portlandtribefan on Sep 12, 2006 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed again!
Hello portlandtribefan,

I agree with you again; I think inserting Carmona into the bullpen was debatable to begin with; granted, the set-up role turned out well for him, but potentially as a starter, he'd probably be a very good #3, maybe even a solid #2 over time, especially with the mid-90s velocity he was displaying as a starter and the K/IP he was showing at Buffalo, a significant increase in his K/IP rate from his earlier years in the farm system.  I certainly think, in time, he COULD be better than the Lee/Westbrook/Byrd trio.

One has to wonder why Carmona wasn't sent down sooner after his disastrous week as the closer.  Granted, they didn't want to ruin his confidence, but after one to two more times of not doing well in a relief role after that, one could question why he wasn't sent down then - if he had, he would have had more time to get his mechanics straightened out and get his pitch count back up so that he could really show what he could do as a starter now.  Right now, I don't think we're seeing the Carmona we did see in late April when he took over for Sabathia and it's doubtful we will see that Carmona the rest of this year because, by the time he gets stretched out to around 100 pitches and regains a feel for all of his pitches in a starting role, the season will be over.

Hopefully, Carmona isn't permanently ruined and we can truly see what he is capable of in a starting role next year; after all, he only had 3 ML starts, certainly not enough time to determine whether he would be an upgrade in the long run over the LWB trio we send out there 60% of the time.

Re: I agree with you wholeheartedly!
It is just simplistic to think of Carmona as having a "ruined psyche" at this early date.  We're talking about 12 bad innings he's pitched since his first save opportunity.  They've been really bad, but still ... it's 12 innings!  The 12 bad innings isn't even half as many as the 28 brilliant innings as a middle reliever that preceded them.

So I hardly think the book is anywhere near closed on a guy who was considered a very good prospect based on (a) his 600-inning track record in the minors, and (b) his tender age of 22.  I mean ... isn't the whole "ruining" idea just plainly stupid?  Isn't it like saying Bobby Cox ruined Andy Marte last year?  Or that Mike Hargroved ruined Jim Thome in 1992?  Or that Gene Michael ruined Greg Maddux in 1987?

I think if you go back to Carmona's apperances, one at a time, the handling he's gotten has been pretty boiler plate.  You might be able to find the one appearance, or even two, where you would have lifted him one batter earlier, or even two.  But if that's all it takes to "ruin" a guy, I doubt he'd have even gotten this far -- and I doubt he'd have any chance of succeeding in the big leagues.

Re: I don't agree with you wholeheartedly!
Time will tell if he is ruined.  I hope not and probably not.  But he's had to have had his confidence shaken badly, is reportedly struggling with his mechanics, and you rush him back to the majors to face the White Sox instead of the Royals?  Getting shelled is not helping his development right now.

by portlandtribefan on Sep 13, 2006 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Re: I don't agree with you wholeheartedly!
Obviously they would have kept him in Buffalo for another start or two, but Buffalo's season ended.  They felt this was his best choice.  Struggles with confidence and mechanics -- are you suggesting these things are unusual for a 22-year-old prospect?

Of course not -- they could not be less unusual.  Hopefully (and I would almost say "probably") he'll work through them, as he has worked through other issues in the past, before you and I were paying so damned much attention to every single inning he pitched.

by Jay on Sep 13, 2006 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with your point - I hope you're right!
Hello Jay,

I can see your point, and I agree that Carmona probably will be okay.  This is in hindsight, but it probably would have been better if the Indians had sent him down to Buffalo sooner so he could have gotten more AAA starts under his belt before being forced to come back up.

He still could finish the season strong, but it seems likely he's still trying to find himself as a starter again; if the Indians had sent him down sooner, he might have already found his dominant self from earlier this year already.

With that said, I believe he'll find himself again eventually; it would just be nice if he could finish up strong this year and go into the offseason on a good note after that rocky week as a closer.

Go Tribe! :-)

In general I agree, but if you look back at the calendar you'll realize there's only a handful of dates we're talking about here.  First they took him out of the closer spot to see if he'd right himself right away as a middle reliever.  Well, he didn't.  By that point, there was hardly any Triple-A season left.

I think also there may have been a sense of not wanting to send him down too soon after his massive breakdowns that one week ... of not wanting to send a message of "we're punishing you," which I think inevitably becomes the message if you do it right away.  Look, there probably was no perfect way to deal with it, it was a crap situation.

by Jay on Sep 13, 2006 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see your point!
Hello Jay,

Yes, I can see why they didn't do it, as Carmona could have gotten the wrong message by being sent down right away, which could have hurt him more psychologically.

Agreed - there was no perfect way to handle the situation.  If he can right himself in his next few starts, and especially next year, then he'll probably be fine, and he'll still only be 23 for next year, not old for AAA or the Majors.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: I can see your point!
I'm looking at next year for him -- there isn't enough time to do much meaningful work this season.  Or who knows, he pitched so few innings this year, maybe they'll get him some work in a fall or winter league.

by Jay on Sep 13, 2006 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe that is the plan!
Hello Jay,

As I recall from one of the recent Farrell reports, I think the Indians plan on him getting 50 IP (? - I think that was the number) in Winter Ball this offseason to try to get him acclimated to starting again and to get his mechanics back in order.

I agree - it's likely next year where we'll really see what Carmona can do as a starter.

I'm not sure, but I think...
Hello drerikbrady,

I know the AFL is only one month (give or take a week or so,) but the others vary (whether it be the Dominican, Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, or Mexican Leagues.)

I don't know or remember exactly how long each lasts, but I think the usual time is 1.5-2 months, maybe more than 2 months for one or two of the leagues.  For Carmona to get 50 IP, and presuming he goes 5-7 IP per start, that would be about 7-10 starts.  Presuming he goes every 5 days (and I think these leagues don't get many off days, a few at most,) that would indicate a season of at least 35-50 days, probably longer, so my guess is, the leagues are probably closer to 2 months each, but they have varying start times.

I know Baseball America's site did a good job on covering these leagues a few years ago, but I'm not so sure about last year.  Perhaps they will list the start and end dates for these leagues, as well as daily boxscores from the games (when possible - sometimes, they can't get the boxscores.)  I would check out BA's site and see if they give more info. on these leagues.  Also, you may want to sign up for BA's Prospect Report email - as I recall, I think they gave the boxscores of the best Minor League prospects to play in those leagues as well, so guys like Carmona, Kouzmanoff, etc., would probably be included in that report.

Thoughts about Miller!
Hello Thommy and dgcambridge,

Miller was leaving the ball up tonight, around mid-thigh or so.  He settled down after the solo shot in the 3rd, but unfortunately, that was the difference in the ballgame.  Miller still struck out 9 in 6 IP.

Keep in mind that Miller had one extra day of rest if I recall correctly.  I believe Miller pitched Game 1 of the series against Altoona on Wednesday, which would have been 5 days of rest, not four.  Plus, the soggy conditions at Akron probably didn't help either.

Ironically, Akron nearly came back in this game; if not for Wyatt Toregas getting thrown out at 2B in the eighth inning, the Aeros probably tie the ballgame up because Crowe hit a double after Toregas was thrown out at 2nd.  That hurt.

This isn't the way Akron started last year against Portland, winning two at home and one of two on the road.  Hopefully, Akron wins Game 2, takes at least one of the road games (if not 2,) then wins again at home if necessary.  Hopefully, the rest of the staff steps up (Laffey was good in Game 2 of the Altoona series, and hopefully, will be again tomorrow.)

By the way, in his AA return, J.D. Martin pitched the 8th and 9th innings tonight, giving up 2 hits, but not allowing any runs.  He had 2 ground outs and 4 fly outs.

Go Tribe! :-)
