Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

Game Thread: September 20, 2006

Cleveland at Oakland, 10:05 PM (STO)

Starting Pitchers:

Cleveland: Fausto Carmona (6.03 ERA, 19)
Oakland: Esteban Loaiza (4.83 ERA, 49)

For Fausto Carmona, the key has been to relax his delivery and not try to add another 2-3 mph to his fastball. If you saw his last start against Minnesota, you'll know what I'm talking about. Fausto would be pitching effortlessly, making hitters pound the ball into the ground, and all of a sudden he'd start overthrowing, messing up his delivery and losing his command. When he'd lose it, Carl Willis and/or Victor Martinez would head to the mound and calm him down. They rinsed and repeated this method over five innings, and it seemed to work. Hopefully with repetition comes consistency for Fausto's delivery.

You'll be excited to know that both Andy Marte and Kevin Kouzmanoff are in the lineup. And the Luna Adventure continues, with Hector impersonating a shortstop tonight.

I'm excited to find out what sort of machine you think Luna is...

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Was good to see Kouzmanoff with three hits, plus one tonight, and no home runs.  He's got to stay focused on being a line-drive hitter, like Garko, and he had a lot of home runs in that first week.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
I love this lineup, even with the weak middle infield.

Saw an interesting piece of trivia in BP today, in Marc Normandin's profile of Brian Roberts.  Apparently Roberts was drafted with a compensation pick the Orioles received for failing to re-sign -- guess who? -- Robbie Alomar.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Interesting. But I'll take Alomar's years with the tribe, thank you very much.

You're just bringing up compensation picks to stir up the Luna-haters.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
And this lineup is a lot of fun (more so with Peralta).  How did Buffalo not win more games?

But it does beg the question: what about Hafner?

Well, we need something to argue about all winter.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Martes saw 4 pitches, took two, swung at two.  I don't think any of them were in the strike zone.  Needs to remember Ted Williams' first rule of hitting.

It's nice to see Carmona throwing strikes (17 of 21 so far).

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
21 of 25 now.  That is good.  Letting his excellent infield defense do the work.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Fausto doesn't look scared to death as a starter. He seems to have a tendency to try and reach back for something extra on two strike counts. In that manner he really reminds me of CC when CC first came up. Both show a tendency to overthrow in tight situations and then get in trouble. CC has gotten over, hopefully Carmona will too.
Wait 'til next year... or something like that

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Well, here's hoping it doesn't take him five years like it did for C.C.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
If Carmona could match CC's first five years that might be ok.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Well, Sabathia was only a tick better than league average for three of those five years.  He had the talent to be more than that, but not the maturity.  Sure, I'd settle for that out of Carmona, but nobody gets excited for someone who seems to refuse to live up to his potential.

CC did win 15 his rookie year - not that wins are a great marker, but he wasn't a turkey

I can't believe Wedge left Carmona in!  Obviously he was finished!  And now we're two runs down!  And Carmona is ruined forever!

... or ...

Is that really as fast as Garko can run?

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Yeah, that is who I meant.  He didn't seem to be hustling all that much, and he had a shot, and we needed that leadoff baserunner.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Milton Bradley and Frank Thomas.

The As are going to the postseason with cheap retreads.

The Indians owed Carmona his 2nd victory for what they have put him through.

Let's see if the Indians can at least outspend the As in 2007.  The As are one of the few teams that draw less than the Indians.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Interesting that a team with a better pitching staff than the Indians has/had room for Sauerbeck on its 25-man roster.

Doesn't seem likely to make the playoff roster.

Wow, I hope our hitters were watching on a how to lay down a bunt.

Scratch that, I hope Wedge and the STAFF were watching on how to lay down a bunt!!!!!

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Damned straight.  We must have blown 20-30 games this season for not knowing how to bunt.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Har Har .... I know the bullpen has failed miserably this year (tonight for example), but the lack of fundamentals is frightening on this squad.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Ok, you lit Luna hit, but you pinch hit Marte with Choo??? Who is managing this squad?

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
Street's ERA is over 4 against lefties, under 2 against righties.  But, I don't know what the split is recently.  Choo hasn't been hitting well lately, striking out a lot.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
ERA is a very weird stat to try to run lefty-right splits for.  Think about it, it doesn't really make any sense.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
You are right, I was just reading it off the chart, don't know what it really means although you could make some kind of guess, just assumed it meant he is more effective against rh hitters.  Which for the year apparently he is looking at his obp and slg % splits.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
No, I was complaining about letting Luna hit mainly. Choo should have pinch hit there (although how he looked yeasterday, maybe he should have stayed on the bench).

If Marte is going to keep progressing, I want to see him get ABs against the studs like Street.

Re: Game Thread: September 20, 2006
And Choo hasn't hit an off speed pitch low this entire series.

F-Cabs was credited with a hold tonight...as if we needed yet another reason to hate mainstream pitching statistics.
