Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006

Cleveland at Chicago, 7:05 PM (STO)

Starting Pitchers:

Chicago: Jon Garland (16-4, 4.37 ERA)
Cleveland: Fausto Carmona (1-8, 5.76 ERA)

Carmona will be on a pitch count, as he's ramping up to starting again. Hopefully the Indians wise up and keep him there, even if he has to return to Buffalo next season.

Akron at Altoona, 7:05 PM
Eastern League Playoffs
Semifinals, Game 4 (AKR 2-1)

Starting Pitchers:

Akron: Jensen Lewis (1-2, 3.89 ERA)
Altoona: Wardell Starling (6-5, 2.80 ERA)

What's so encouraging about Akron's success this season is that the Aeros' top four starters (Miller, Laffey, Smith, Lewis) are all 22 or younger.

Frederick at Kinston, 7:05 PM
Carolina League Playoffs
Mills Cup Championship Series, Game 1

Starting Pitchers:

Frederick: Matt Bruback (3-5, 3.69 ERA)
Kinston: Joe Ness (9-6, 3.62 ERA)

Ness, a 6th Round pick last year, quietly put together a solid season behind Chuck Lofgren and Scott Lewis; he's struck out 120 and allowed 128 hits in 139.1 innings.

We have ruined this kid... Carmona looks like he would rather be anywhere else on earth right now.
Wait 'til next year... or something like that

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
Aw, come on, it's a long life ... he's not "ruined" yet.  Check out Greg Maddux's rookie year, or for that matter, Johan Santana's.

Clearly (even before seeing him tonight), Carmona did not have enough time in Buffalo to straighten out his mechanics.  My guess is that the staff has basically told him that straight out.

I think the point of this start, as much as anything, was for the staff to communicate to Carmona that he's still one of their top guys, that they see his problems as temporary and fixable and they're not going to give up on him.

No kidding.  I'd like to see Gutierrez out in CF a few times myself.  Maybe make Grady the DH for a day or two if you want to keep the streak going.

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
Scouts like him a lot.  Plenty of K's.  But he's been best as a starter, and that's what he was doing the last few months.  I think he's likely to be our 6th or 7th starter next season.

I agree with Jay!
Hello portlandtribefan,

I agree with Jay on Slocum's potential, especially as a starter.  Right now, it's looking like a good thing that the Indians put him on the 40-man roster and not expose him to the Rule 5 Draft last offseason.

I think his chances of making it as a decent to good starter are better than Guthrie's, who likely will be gone after this season.

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
Seems like everyone and their mothers aside from Shapiro and Wedge knew Carmona was going to get lit up, but they started him anyway. He sucked after he left the closer's spot, sucked in Buffalo, and they started him anyway. Can't say I didn't see this blowout coming. They could have started Sowers his normal spot and gave Carmona an easier assignment against Kansas City, but did not. Carmona is ruined for the forseeable future.

attaboy Garko.

I noticed Carmona has extinguished the torch lit by Belliard of corn-rowed Indians.  Maybe J-Mike can restore it?

OSU 14, Texas 7 at the half!
Hello everyone,

OSU leads Texas 14-7 at the half.  Texas should only have 3; the only reason Texas got in the end zone because of a very questionable "helmet-to-helmet" hit on Colt McCoy on 3rd down at around the 10-yard line - it was really just a good tackle.

Fortunately, OSU took the momentum right back with 16 seconds left - Smith to Ginn for the TD.

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
I was just thinking, it's a bit ironic that the reason Texas traded Pronk was because they were in this same situation ... established veteran 1B/DH (Palmeiro) and more big-batted prospects at 3B/1B than they knew what to do with (Blalock and Texeira).

Just makes we want, all the more, not to make the same mistake by trading one.

Miller is about 34 I think.  He spent 10 years in the minors and a couple years in the majors.  I think he's beyond ruining.

Hello Jay,

Yes, I definitely don't want the Indians to make that mistake either.  Find a way to work Garko/Kouzmanoff/Marte in - I'm sure it can be done with some ingenuity.  :-)

Not to mention, Kouzmanoff has a significant injury history, and Pronk seems to miss a few weeks every year.

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
He was totally right.  The umps take away part of the inside part of the plate when they issue that warning.  It easily could have affected Carmona.  The least we deserve is for him to back up the threat.

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
How do you like Ozzie's hypermanaging of the bullpen?  MacDougal got five guys out in a row, there's nobody on base, up two runs ... go to the pen anyway, go for the matchup.

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
What's weird is, it's not even going for the matchup, since PHing with Michaels was an obvious move.

by Jeffrey R on Sep 9, 2006 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
Sure it is.  He'd rather have Michaels vs. LHP than Choo vs. RHP.  Which is interesting, considering the HR wasn't really an issue.

by Jay on Sep 9, 2006 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006
Yeah, in that situation in seems like all that is relevant is the OBP. Anyway, I just looked it up: Choo's OBP against RHP is .390; Michales OBP against LHP is .367. Probably a small-sample size issue on Choo's number... but if these accurate reflect the probabilities, I suppose it is a good move by Ozzie.

Re: Game Thread(s): September 9, 2006

Pitching change with 2 outs in 9th and no one on base. Ozzie loves for people to hate him.

Nice at-bat J-Mike. Did he throw his bat this time too so it looks like he really, really cares, thus forcing the team to keep starting him?

Akron tied 2-2; Kinston up 1-0!
Hello everyone,

Akron falls 3-1 - there will be a Game 5 in Akron (tomorrow, I think?)  Jensen Lewis' line:

5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

There were fielding errors by Ochoa and Mulhern; Ochoa's error led to an unearned run in the first inning.  Mulhern had 3 hits, Crowe and Snyder each had a hit (Akron only had 5 hits total.)  Barton with 2 walks, Goleski with a walk (Akron had 3 walks total.)

I hope the Aeros beat the Curve in Game 5 like they did last year - Akron took a 2-0 lead at home, Altoona won the next two at home, then Akron took Game 5.  Hopefully, in this instance, history will repeat itself.

As for Kinston, Jordan Brown (2-run in the 7th) and Rodney Choy Foo (solo in the 1st) hit HRs; Kinston was down 3-1 going into the bottom of the 6th, but Kinston put a 5-spot up, then after Frederick responded with 1 in the top of the 7th, Kinston put up 2 in both the 7th and 8th.  Choy Foo had 2 hits, several others had 1 hit and several had a walk each.  Joe Ness' line:

5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

After 3 quarters, OSU leads Texas 17-7.  Go Bucks! :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Hunter Wendelstedt is a fool!
Hello everyone,

I was listening to the game (and actually seen when Wendelstedt warned Carmona) and Wendelstedt was a fool for calling out Carmona when he's a rookie who is struggling with his mechanics, yet doesn't throw out MacDougal when he nearly hits Shoppach in the head after he warned both benches.  I don't blame Wedge for getting angry - I would have too.

I sure hope Sam Holbrook is more fair tomorrow and Sabathia can dominate the White Sox.

By the way,

FINAL: OSU 24 Texas 7

Go Bucks - may they win it all! :-)

Go Tribe! :-)
