Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3

Indians lead series 3-1

Recap
Box Score
Win Probability Added @ Fangraphs

Highest WPA:

Paul Byrd .252
Casey Blake .136
Jhonny Peralta .095

Lowest WPA:

Travis Hafner -.096
Kenny Lofton -.058
Asdrubal Cabrera -.016

All 10 runs scored in Game 4 came in two consecutive team at-bats.

Tim Wakefield, who had cruised through the first four innings, "hung" a knuckler to Casey Blake, and he hammered the pitch deep into the Home Run Porch. After that, a series of fortunate events prolonged the inning, including Kevin Youkilis dropping a pop fly that would have been out number two. Later in the at-bat, Tim Wakefield deflected a probable double play ball, driving in another run.

But the biggest hit of the game came after Wakefield left. Manny Delcarmen's mid-90s heat was supposed to provide a major change of pace from Wakefield's lazy knucklers. Apparently they weren't aware of Jhonny Peralta's affinity for the outside fastball. Peralta rocketed a high Delcarmen fastball to the right field seats.

Paul Byrd, meanwhile, had given the Indians five solid innings. About the only thing that wasn't working for Byrd was the double windup (he gave up hits on two of the three times he used it). A generous strike zone aided Byrd, who used his control he fool and frustrate Boston hitters. But the Cleveland mesmerizer doesn't usually last long, which is why Eric Wedge had Jensen Lewis warming in the sixth. Byrd lost it quickly, giving up no-doubters to Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz.

Byrd was removed without recording an out in the sixth, which suited the Indians just fine. Because of the off day on Wednesday, Lewis and Betancourt were both available for multiple innings. If Game 5 was played on Wednesday, Wedge would have had to either go with Byrd a while longer or use Rafael Perez for an inning or two.

Manny Ramirez finished off a back-to back-to back home run streak, hammering a Jensen Lewis 3-2 pitch to right. Ramirez admired his handiwork like he'd just won the game, and that admiration will be filed away for later retribution.

The Indians got some breaks, but to their credit, they capitalized fully on them. Travis Hafner was the only starter not to reach base, and each of the seven runs was scored by a different hitter. And the bullpen was fantastic yet again.

Next Up: Game 5, and a chance to clinch the pennant. Sabathia vs. Beckett.

I'll be out of town for a few days, so Jay's driving for Game 5. See you on Saturday.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
Awesome, awesome win ..... but this is no time to let up.

A few of my own observations.

  1. Is it just me, or does Jhonny remind you of Jeter when he hits those homers to RF. Reminds me of Jeter reaching and poking towards the short porch in Yankee Stadium. Heck, the way Jhonny plays defense is similar to Jeter, no range. Only Jeter can make that highlight throw from the LF grass and Jhonny can't.

  2. While the strike zone was large for Byrd, it was also very large for Wakefield and company. There were plenty of high pitches called strikes on our guys.

  3. Manny's move was truly classless. I was pleasantly surprised Raffy didn't bean him in the 8th. Am hoping the first AB he sees against us next year, the SP (hopefully CC) drills him straight in the ribs.

I love the 3-1 lead. But do not think for any chance this is over. We cannot let them breathe. CC needs to fire at the strike zone until the Red sox start swinging early in the count, then he can nibble. I'd love to see Grady open with a bunt, AsCab to bunt him over, and play for a run in the 1st. Just to knock Beckett off his game at the start. Then hopefully tattoo him. Here's to his to stiff back not loosening up completely.

Manny's behavior really bothered me.  I can't imagine a situation in which he doesn't get drilled - and deservedly so.

Girardi gave him the business in the postgame.

The only scenario I can imagine where Manny doesn't get drilled next April is one in which Wedge tells his team, "Who cares?  He acted like an idiot, and he's already made himself a fool.  If we hit him, we stoop to that moron's level.  The best retaliation is to ignore him, because he's irrelevant."

Tabs, you never - ever -  show up an opponent - never.

If I'm Lewis I file that one away and the next time he's up I strike him out on a high heater and then point at Manny and give him the double fist pump.  See how he likes being on the other end of it.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
Chuck,

Make no mistake -- what Manny did was disgusting and absurd.  His behavior gives me even more pride in our Indians -- we don't have a single player who would think about pulling a stunt like that.

But sometimes the best way to strike back is to laugh at the idiot.  The jerks of the world want us to get angry; get upset; get flustered.  They don't deal well when we make them irrelevant.

Go play golf, Manny, and maybe we'll stick a heater in your ribs next April.  If we even care.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
So Manny celebrated because he wanted us to hit him?  What?  He celebrated because he's a selfish asshole with no concept of where his team is and what that home run actually accomplished.  In Manny's mind, all he knows is he hit one out, and therefore things are great.  Really, this is not some master conspiracy on his part to incite us.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
I think he means that Manny wants to get everyone's attention (the "conspiracy" is to have everyone look at him).  It's no different than a 2-year old.  One of the easiest ways to do it is by prancing around like he did last night and during the 5th inning of Game 2.

It's just that when he does that in front of the opposing crowd, the attention is anger.  When he does that in front of the home crowd, he gets laughter and chants of "Manny!" with kisses being blown to him when he goes to left field.

I think we are all talking about the same elephant here, just from different perspectives.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
This is exactly right.

I should also clarify that I'd be fine if we nailed him in the ribs, but I don't need it to happen.  He's going to lose, and that's plenty enough for me.  He also has to enjoy the ever-growing reputation he has for being an idiot and an ass.

So, to finish up - maybe the best reaction to Manny's behavior is no reaction at all.  Let the 2-year old do absurd things to get attention, but don't feed into it and reinforce the behavior...

No, I'd rather we throw at him.  But only if the situation allows it.  I'm obviously not willing to take the runner on in a tight game, but he needs to feel it a little.

Personally, I think the rest of the Red Sox team, including Francona, probably dumped all over Manny after the game. They know the last thing they need in the playoffs is to hand the Indians further motivation to end the series tomorrow.

I think the best way to punish Manny is post a huge picture of him standing at the plate after his home run with his arms raised in triumph, in the clubhouse so everyone can be reminded of his disrespect...and then focus on sending his ass home until spring.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
Manny is so classless and clueless that it did not upset me.  In fact, I was relieved that he did it because if the Tribe needed any reminder about who they are up against, Manny provided it.  Tomorrow when CC is on the mound, all he needs to do his remember that stupid move and take it to the entire team.

If I were a Boston fan (and player), then I would be pissed.  At the very moment when they felt they were climbing out of the whole, Manny relaxed and lost his grip.  The team was toast after that.  You could tell that Timmy Mac was upset by his silence on Fox because he knew how deflating it would be for the Red Sox (he and Fox SOoo do not want an Indians-Rockies series).

As for beaning Manny in the back the next time the Indians face the Red Sox, I'm not so sure that will happen.  I expect the Red Sox will trade him in December to the National League and be rid of him (but that is a discussion for another day).

Jhonny's power is to right, right-center. I'm not expert but his swing seems awfully long (and not quick enough) for him to get around on pitches. When he drives them straight ahead or opposite field he CRUSHES the ball. It's what I always look for when he's up.

b.  the sox fans are actually more obnoxious than yankee fans

I know there were threads on this in the past, but it is something that really bothered me tonight.  To top it off, I was heckling the Sox fans around me with my typical "have you ever been to Boston, front-runner?"  and not shockingly I hear from other tribe fans around us that the Sox fans are from Toledo and were chanting O-H-I-O to Hang on Sloopy, so I should cut them some slack.  Excuse me?  WTF?

Hrm, fair enough. I didn't know they'd boot her for it. I don't like that rule very much. Its understandable for the saftey of the players and all, but throwing it back is a great way to keep the crowd's spirit up after a homerun. They should try to find ways to accomodate harmless fun like that, while still stopiing bottle throwers, etc.

Personally, I would glady trade a $100 souvenier for the video of my throwing the ball back to the applause of the crowd.

As an aside, I was completely pissed off at Kelly Shoppach for swinging at 3 straight balls (two fouled off) in that 7 run inning. He wanted to pad his stats instead of taking a walk for the team.

Just a little thing, but something that bothered me once the Sox scored three more.

The Manny thing is being blown way, way out of proportion. He hit a homerun and then he pimped it. These things happen. It was not a big deal and it had no effect on the game. So, again, who cares? If that is the way he reacts when pulling his team back within four against the best bullpen in baseball, so be it.

The 'pen looks good for Thursday. All of the COT will be rested and ready. Hopefully CC will make a good showing and we can finish this thing at home.

Re: Youk's drop of the pop-up.

Possibly mentioned in the game thread, but that was almost a back-breaker.  Had Youk composed himself and caught the ball after bobbling it, they had Guitz doubled up at third.  As soon as the ball hit the ground, the camera panned to home plate and Guitz was just crossing it.  Without being at the game and able to see everything on the field, I'm assuming Guitz took off for home, head down, as soon as the ball hit Youk's glove the first time.

Now think how much this morning might suck if THAT had happened.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
They actually noted on the broadcast that he's allowed to break for home as soon as the fielder touches it, no matter if he bobbles it or not (which makes sense, to prevent a fielder from "bobbling" a ball to throw off a tagging runner). So I was initially worried that they'd gotten a break on that non-catch cause Gutz would've scored easily.

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
Interesting information about the rule interpretation.

I'd like to focus on the fact that Red Sox Nation is frustrated that this represents how the ball is not bouncing their way - and that Lady Luck is on the side of the Indians.  Funny, no one was talking about Lady Luck when Garko flubbed that grounder to load the bases with no outs, only to see Westbrook pick up his teammate with some great pitching.

I had decided there must be one of those obscure baseball scoring rules that you cannot have an error on a foul ball -- an error has to result in somebody taking a base, not just a lack of an out (& a strike instead, unless 2 strikes already).  Still, contrary to what the announcers said about it saving a run, dropping that foul pop hurt the Sox.

Error on a foul ball
A fielder can make an error on a foul ball.  Like all failures to make a catch, it is the scorer's decision.

(a) The official scorer shall charge an error against any fielder:

(1) whose misplay (fumble, muff or wild throw) prolongs the time at bat of a batter ...

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
Great read.  The writer has been pro-Indians (or, not pro-Red Sox) throughout the series.  He has been great to read.

As I mentioned yesterday, I knew the next couple days would be sweet to be among the Boston media (heck, I even sprung the 50 cents to buy the Globe this morning).  This ESPN article was front and center during the morning talk show, as the hosts berated the article... not for what it said, but because the first paragraph was one sentence with 92 words.  They even joked when one of the guys tried to read it without taking a breath.  Don't they realize that other punctuation -- such as commas or dashes -- represent pauses for the reader???

After berating this article, they turned to the ESPN article about Paul Byrd's book, ripping into Byrd's comments.

Nice.  When you have to rip on an article's punctuation or a player's heartfelt (and remarkably balanced) beliefs, you know the Boston media and fans have jumped the shark.  (Oh, and did I throw in the fact that they think Wedge looks a homeless man and that Byrd looks like Tony Shaloub from the Men in Black movie?)

... And some may wonder why Manny gets away with his classless behavior in Boston...

Again, this is a special time to be among Red Sox Nation, truly special.  I think I will go out and buy the Herald, now...

Go Tribe.  Do not rest on these guys.  Pummel them tomorrow and don't give them a chance to breath!!!

Also, he is the same guy who berated Wedge for starting Byrd in Game 4 against the Yankees. link

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
I'm not sure where the sarcasm is directed (me or Red Sox Nation), but the sweet thing in Red Sox Nation - which included the Red Sox team - is that they have no idea what is hitting them.  In fact, they don't realize they are being hit.  It's not confidence, either.  They are not thinking that "the Red Sox should be up 3-1".  It's arrogance; they are thinking "the Indians should be down 3-1".  In fact, I had one fan say to me, "Well, it doesn't matter because the Rockies will win the World Series..."

This is not a woe-is-me speech (as many might claim).  I love the disrespect!  Heck, Bill Belichick continues to win Super Bowls using this approach - and the Boston media love it.

The point I am making is that I find it very hard to see the Red Sox coming back because, quite simply, all of Red Sox Nation (including the players) have their heads up their asses.  I say this with all due respect to the Red Sox.  If they were to take their heads out of their asses, then I would be very afraid.  But if today is any indication, it is not going to happen.

No sarcasm directed at you Spidey, it's just that I find smug, punctuation/spelling criticism tiresome - that's all.  Just because an idea is presented in a hillbilly accent, for instance, doesn't mean the idea is flawed; in fact it has no bearing whatsoever on the quality of the concept.

Let those boys up there in New England keep their sense of superiority - hopefully it will keep them warm on those cold evenings in October while their watching the Tribe play in the World Series.

Great quote.  I mean, really great quote.  Hey, whatever works for you, but the whole sky-pointing thing is goofy for me.

What I love about Byrd's approach is that he is saying that God does not take sides.  And, it's quite foolish to credit God for a victory because the reverse truth of the statement is that God chose to not grant victory to the opposing team.  I can understand saying it in the heat of the moment, but often players say it during an interview when the feeling has passed.

I was reading comments on another board where they were defending that as him beginning a slide and of course NOTHING AT ALL like A-Rod's slap in the playoffs a few years ago. If that's how he begins a slide, Pedroia is the worst baserunner I've ever seen since he very nearly runs into Victor & then drops to his knees before his arms even come down.

However, I'm pretty sure he was trying his best to faux-slide/knock the ball out there, which is exactly what it looked like when I saw it on TV live, too.

Agree completely.

Pedroia was on Sportscenter tonight, totally irrascible.  He was in the locker room being asked by reporters about the perceived problems the lineup is having.

His response, and I'm paraphrasing but this is close to exact:

"I nearly took Sabathia's head off to start the series, and that was an out, and I've hit a couple of balls hard that have been outs, so I know I'm swinging the bat well.  The rest is for you guys to talk about.  I don't give a shit."

He actually did say the last line.

If I were interviewing him, I'd have followed up with, "Fine, but let's establish one thing.  You're still moved to tears by inside fastballs, right?"

Re: Game One Hundred Seventy: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
Well last night was certainly incredible. My first ever game at Jacobs Field, and it was more than I could've ever imagined. If I decide to write a book of memoirs in 60 years from now, last night will have its own chapter. The atmosphere, the park, the towels, having 100 men in a washroom erupt in cheering as Casey hits his HR, getting a picture with John Adams, distracting Ken Rosenthal during a cellphone call, and the list goes on and on.

But I've got one story in particular that GFP will appreciate. So after roaming the streets for an hour postgame in a drunken stupor, we decide to head toward the players' parking lot. Casey comes over to sign (my buddy had his towel signed "Casey's Beard"), Byrd comes over (I ask him when we can expect his book to be released), Grady and Pronk both drive away as quickly as possible....and then over to the fence walks our buddy Jensen.

He starts talking to two gorgeous blondes standing next to me...he definitely knew them from somewhere. So Jensen goes to sign my ticket, and instead of congratulating him on the win, what's the first thing out of my mouth?

"Hey Jensen, for god's sake would you finally start accepting my Facebook invites?" The girls had a good laugh, and even Jensen looked at me and chuckled. Somehow it didn't come across as creepy...I honestly have no idea how. I started chatting them up as Jensen finished off the autographs...but of course the girls proceeded to walk to the other side of the fence and hopped in Jensen's car. A group of us proceeded to serenade him with such chants as "Welcome to the big leagues, playa" and "2 is better than 1".

Twas an awesome way to end off an epic night. It felt like the Tribe had won the World Series on the streets outside the Jake. I can't imagine what it could be like tomorrow night.

From what I thought, Manny had mucho respect for the Indians and our organization.  He was one that was disappointed to leave here after we did not shell out the money to keep him here.  He was always considerate, even running homeruns out hard when at the Jake...  Im not sure, maybe he forgot about the Tribe, maybe it was the playoffs, maybe he cant count and thought he just put the Sox in the lead, or maybe it is automatic.....   He may not be used to being blown out like that.  Normally every game is close and normally he has runners on base.

Whatever the issue, Manny was always a player I wished we kept, if he was willing to play for what he was worth.
