Tonight's National Anthem

Apparently country wunderkind Taylor Swift bagged on tonight's national anthem.  Her replacement: Coshocton, Ohio's own country chanteuse, Danielle Peck.

What the Indians allegedly did not know is that Peck also dated (and broke up with) tonight's starting pitcher.  No, not CC Sabathia.  Josh Beckett.

Full story here.

Apparently, Peck was recommended by a country music booker, and the choice makes sense, since Peck and her family grew up as Tribe fans.

So, tonight, while Josh is finishing his warmup tosses in the bullpen, his ex will be singing the national anthem, on the Jumbotron, most likely decked out in Tribe gear.

In the words of Dave Barry: I am not making this up.  Let the mind games continue.

UPDATE:  Enhanced and promoted -- and here's more about Beckett's skills with the ladies.  [Jay]

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
I wonder if she was the one that stuck the carrot between Beckett's cheecks that he seems to want to hold there when he's standing on the mound.

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
Yeah, that Danielle Peck does look great. But she made me forget something.  Anything interesting going on tonight?

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
Can't accuse Beckett of bad taste in women.

I love that the Indians are pulling out all the stops for this game.  Maybe she can sing a duet with Madonna and they can finish with a Franch kiss.  Or, all of the Indians can tell him that everyone "made whoopee" with her in the clubhouse.  Better yet, we can give him the Hanrahan treatment from Slap Shot.

This is awesome!  I think the Indians are looking ahead to selling the movie rights to this post-season - the story has been great, but adding this sex angle assures that it will be a hit.

Ha ha, awesome. Let's Rock their Sox and win this pennant tonight, boys!

I'm tired of hearing all this "oh, the Sox have been in worse positions before and came back!'

Screw that.

I lay the odds of McCarver stating that exact fact on tonight's broadcast at 3-to-2.

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
Now I think we're all wishing we were on TBS so Craig Sager could interview Peck right after she sings the anthem about what happened between her and Beckett, followed by a close-up of Beckett throwing 134 in the bullpen with blushing cheeks.

I simply cannot condone objectification of women on this site.  As a counterpoint, click here to read about some of her humanitarian efforts that represent her as a person, not as a sex object.

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
Hilarious!

Hoping to get lucky myself tonight...by scoring game tickets, that is.  You guys might be interested to know that obtaining last minute tickets is not impossible.  We were downtown an hour before Tuesday night's game and weren't ready to go in to a bar yet, so decided to take a walk around.  On a whim, I checked with the box office and amazingly, they had two tickets available in the upper deck.  I'm not sure how, since I didn't see any empty seats anywhere, but you never know.  Sometimes people back out at the last minute.  If you live nearby, it can't hurt to try.  I've been to almost 20 games this season, and the playoff atmosphere is completely different.  The Media talks about Fenway being an intimidating place to play--they forget about The Jake's past, and now present, magic.

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
Well, the real mojo is if his current girlfriend is in town for the game.  Then he has to spend the whole time wondering if he managed to look indifferent enough while Beck sang the anthem, and what they might say to one another, etc.

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
Beck is singing the national anthem now? That could be cool!

Did Peck cancel, too? Was it related to all this recent media attention to her relationship with Beckett?

:P

Re: Tonight's National Anthem
Let's find out quick if Beckett broke up with her. If so, one of us at the game tonight can yell out a strategically timed, appropriate reference to his love gone bad.

Reminds me of the sports research years ago: They had some college basketball star shoot consecutive easy baskets and then the researcher mentioned something unpleasant from his past. At that point he failed to make a single shot.

In news that bears absolutely no relation to this game but will get incessantly talked about in the broadcast anyway, Torre's apparently out as manager of the Yankees after turning down a one-year deal at a reduced salary.

But really, did the Tribe PR team do this on purpose, or was it really just a coincidence?

Gammons (Insider):

The game of baseball is not only about payroll (Boston is at $143 million, and Cleveland is at $61 million), and it is not just about whom the television networks want playing in the big games. It is about playing the game right, catching the ball, picking up stumbling teammates and never changing lanes to try to get there two minutes earlier. It is what general manager Mark Shapiro, assistant GM Chris Antonetti and Wedge have built in Cleveland. They, not Torre or Drew, are the real story.
