Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd

Link

As you can see from the link, there's a lot of story here.  Just thought I'd be the one to break the news of Davis' DFA.  For those who don't know, Designated for Assignment gives the team 10 days to find another team for Davis, or I guess see if he clears waivers, which would shock me.  To me, the most interesting news here is that the FO seems to have a little quicker trigger this year than last, between Marte and now Davis, it looks like the bar really has been raised regarding on the field performance.

Davis has failed for 3 years running. I don't care how much talent you have, the move was forced. He was not doing the tribe nor himself any good. Hopefully he'll do better somewhere else.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Definitely agree, and I'm glad they're finally cutting the cord. But the timing is a bit curious.

They should definitely get something for him.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Well, Marte was hurt on some level. Plus he's still so, so young.

The Davis thing is crazy. I don't mind it, but it's crazy.

Plus, now we get to pound him when pitches for some team like the O's.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Does this mean Matt Miller is ready or should we expect someone like Eddy Mujica?

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
The Davis thing disappoints me on some level, as he's one of those guys who you look at & say, "if he could put it all together, he'd be amazing!" Of course, the reality is that most of those guys never put it together, I guess.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Best of luck to JD and his family elsewhere, and I'm glad the front office finally pulled the trigger.  Wedge was tired of wasting a roster spot on a guy he couldn't trust.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
I have no problem with the Indians FO parting ways with Davis ... but don't you think someone would have been willing to part with something for him?  Anything at all?  Cash?  Baseballs?  UnderArmor?

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
But why DFA him first?  Seems to put less pressure on the other team to make a deal.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Gives you the chance to free up his roster spot right now instead of waiting for the trade.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
I agree somewhat, but I really don't think we'd bet much for him. And I really don't care, its not like we are going to get a solid prospect or anything, and keeping him on the team when that spot could be used by one of our potentially better younger relievers would be costly in terms of this teams overall potential performance.

Also, I think the timing of this might have something to do with the wear and tear on the bullpen in the past week. Wedge has had to dip into the bottom of the bullpen often recently and if a worse case scenario occurs again he needs better production out of Davis' spot in the bullpen.

The bigger question is....who takes over the Redneck Report?

It's a crushing blow to the Tribe Report, that's for sure.  Al Palowski is sweating through his shirt.  (note: I hate STO's pregame stuff)

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
I wonder if the Yankees pick a guy up like Davis, considering they are so desperate for pitching right now.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Davis wouldn't make it onto the subway without getting boo'd. I guess I'm assuming he'd go straight up to the Yanks and not spend any time in AAA "fine tuning" his stuff. If he couldn't pull it together in the CLE, no way could he handle the pressure if NYC.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
This is old news, Davis announced it to the crowd during yesterday's game.  It was a little awkward because the team was on the road, but Angelos let Davis use his box for the announcement.  I believe that the crowd just listened in confused silence.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
This, to me, is another example of Wedge playing favorites.  Wedge won't pitch him for long periods of time, then brings him in and he struggles and you can see Wedge thinking, "See.  I can't pitch this guy."

I would be ok with that if Casey Freaking Blake wasn't in the line-up everyday doing absolutely nothing except double-clutching at every pitch thrown to him.  (This is even before the Marte injury).

Why?  Uhhhh, basically because Blake was shot-put champion at his high school.  You know, "such a good athlete."  Really.  You don't realize what a good athlete CB is.  I once saw him run 300 miles, choke out a grizzly bear with the sleeper hold and then eat 800 chicken mcnuggets.

Whatever.  Is it just me who thinks the guy plays favorites?

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Well, if Davis didn't struggle, we'd pitch him more.  Can you really blame Wedge?  We couldn't bring him in in the middle of an inning, or he'd implode.  We couldn't bring him into a close game, or he'd implode.  Every time it looked like he'd turned a corner, and pitch well for a couple straight games, he'd implode.

Hammy talked this afternoon about Wedge saying that telling Davis he was being let go was one of the hardest things he's had to do as Indians manager because he likes Davis so much.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
Does anyone remember his start or maybe long relief appearance against the Twins @ the Metrodome a few years ago?

He was doing pretty well through, what, three or four innings?  Then he threw inside and got either tossed or warned and came completely unhinged - screaming and hopping around like a madman.

After that display I always suspsected he was wound a little too tightly for the bright lights of the show.

Your mileage may vary, however....

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
I predict that the teams competing will be St. Louis, Cincinnati, or Tampa Bay in that order.  As long as we get a decent Class A player, I'll be happy.

With the lowest amount of snark possible, JD will probably be something like a 10-15 game winner in the NL.

Re: Westbrook to DL, Davis DFA'd
In Christina Kahrl's chat on BP today, one of the questions asked her her opinion on the Athletics purchasing Jason Davis from the Indians; no idea on the validity.
