Released RHP Roberto Hernandez
After Hernandez let Tuesday's game get away, it was a matter of time before he'd be sent packing. June is generally the time when guys with proven track records turn into stiffs and no-good vagrants; at least, that's what it seems like. From a physical standpoint, Hernandez still is capable of getting hitters out, even at his advanced age. His fastball still gets into the mid-90s, which is probably his ticket onto another team before a week has passed. Heck, by the time I finally get around to post this, he'll have landed with another team in search not of someone better, but someone different who can't be any worse than the guy he replaced. So goes the process of maintaining a bullpen.
Recalled Edward Mujica from Buffalo (AAA)
Anyway, this essentially means that Jason Stanford has gained a more permanent spot on the roster. Mujica, for all his future prospects, is merely a stopgap until Jake Westbrook comes off the Disabled List. Getting Matt Miller back to the majors is probably the endgame of this series of moves.
Stanford's move into the front end of the bullpen means that Rafael Perez moves into a more prominent late-inning role. I think his starting days are finally behind him, so we'll be seeing smaller and more frequent doses of Perez. And for good reason: in his short major-league career, left-handers are hitting .106/.192/.170 off him. With those splits, even allowing for some league adjustment, how could you not leverage that?
Recalled OF Ben Francisco from Buffalo (AAA)
As I said before, I don't really think it's necessary to go with five outfielders, especially with a platoon no longer necessary in left field. Francisco is a practically perfect fourth outfielder, as he has a low-maintenance swing, can play each outfield position reasonably well, and can steal a base. He's eventually going to replace Jason Michaels, but since the Indians have several more years of options on him, Franklin Gutierrez should get much of the playing time made available thanks to David Dellucci's serious hamstring injury.

Re: Transactions
As much as I like Miller (actually lukewarm about him), I don't like carrying 13 pitchers on staff and only 3 bench guys.
We'll see I guess.

Re: Transactions
Right now: CC, Fausto, Byrd, Westbrook (activate on Sat), Lee in rotation; Borowski, Betancourt, Fultz, Perez, Mastny, Cabrera, Mujica (sent down when Westbrook is activated), and Stanford in the pen. So in order to call up Matt Miller, someone has to go. It could be an OF, but more than likely would be a pen arm. Based on options left, it would have to be Mastny or Perez.

And I think Stanford slots nicely into a long role, but I'm not convinced he can be a matchup lefty. Soft-tossing control artists generally don't put the OO in LOOGY, if you know what I mean.

Re: Transactions
The economic realities are that we are not going to get anyone of REAL value, because we are not selling any tickets despite our record.
The most we are going to do, is trade away someone that has fallen out of favor in the front office (Sowers, Marte being a likely candidates) in exchange for some other discount player that has fallen out of favor elsewhere.

We probably don't need big impact....
Positional OPS
C (Cleveland - .922, AL Avg. - .718)
1B (Cleveland - .762, AL Avg. - .807)
2B (Cleveland - .632, AL Avg. - .757)
3B (Cleveland - .743, AL Avg. - .772)
SS (Cleveland - .818, AL Avg. - .715)
LF (Cleveland - .765, AL Avg. - .729, this was a shocker)
CF (Cleveland - .867, AL Avg. - .747)
RF (Cleveland - .721, AL Avg. - .807)
DH (Cleveland - .846, AL Avg. - .793)
The good news is that we get great production at the 3 of the four lowest OPS positions - C, SS and CF.
Our most glaring deficiencies are at 2B and RF. Garko and Blake seem to have everything under control at 1B and 3B now.
Re: We probably don't need big impact....
A decent bullpen arm may be all we need. Increased playing time by Gutz could push that OPS up by a bit, but maybe not as much as most people here want (Larry Bird is not walking through that door, people).

I think there was another thread elsewhere too but can't find it.
Re: We probably don't need big impact....
Willits LAA, E Brown, KC, Kubel, MIN, Dellucci CLE, Payton BAL, Stewart OAK, Matsui NYY, Crawford TB, Catalanotto TEX, Monroe, DET, Ibanez SEA, Lind TOR, Manny BOS, Mackowiak CWS
Other notables: G Anderson LAA, Gibbons BAL, Ford MIN, Michaels CLE, Stairs TOR, Wilkerson TEX.
Out of all those guys, the only "studs" I would count are Matsui, Manny, Monroe, and probably Ibanez and Garrett when he's healthy. That is only 5 of 14. Uggh.
Re: Transactions
Crazy trade predictions? I'm not sure if we're reading the same threads, but I've seen mostly bullpen arm swaps ... No Mark Teixeira type deals.
The economic realities are that we are not going to get anyone of REAL value
I think this is where you misuse the word "value." Because if we did get someone of little cost who had fallen out of favor elsewhere*, and then they proved a successful piece of the team, that's great value. That's the definition of value.
*I still like David Aardsma.

And now I'm just confused.

Re: Transactions
It's still early and I'm starting to hear Twins footsteps.
And what ever happened to the Foulke money ($5m) that we didn't spend? I would imagine there's still a few shekels in the bank for a good set-up man/corner outfielder/DH if one should suddenly become available.

Re: Transactions
Unfortunately, many Cleveland fans are still getting over the way the late 90s juggernaut team was dismantled by free agency, despite Dolan's offers to Ramirez and Thome that were really more than he could afford. The perception of many is that they won't believe in the Indians until Dolan shows them the money by bringing in a star.
Sad, but unfortunately true. Cleveland fans were spoiled by the late 90s teams and may not come back until and unless another juggernaut is built, or the team is in a tight pennant race late in the season.

Re: Transactions
If the Indians were in Pittsburg or Houston or San Fransisco or Dallas they'd be selling out. Only in Florida would I expect such low turn-outs.
Good baseball in the 90's should not diminish attendance for good baseball now. The weather's great, the kids are outta school and the Tribe's in the middle of a pennant race. I find the current low attendance inexcusable.
