Released RHP Roberto Hernandez

After Hernandez let Tuesday's game get away, it was a matter of time before he'd be sent packing. June is generally the time when guys with proven track records turn into stiffs and no-good vagrants; at least, that's what it seems like. From a physical standpoint, Hernandez still is capable of getting hitters out, even at his advanced age. His fastball still gets into the mid-90s, which is probably his ticket onto another team before a week has passed. Heck, by the time I finally get around to post this, he'll have landed with another team in search not of someone better, but someone different who can't be any worse than the guy he replaced. So goes the process of maintaining a bullpen.

Recalled Edward Mujica from Buffalo (AAA)

Anyway, this essentially means that Jason Stanford  has gained a more permanent spot on the roster. Mujica, for all his future prospects, is merely a stopgap until Jake Westbrook comes off the Disabled List. Getting Matt Miller back to the majors is probably the endgame of this series of moves.

Stanford's move into the front end of the bullpen means that Rafael Perez moves into a more prominent late-inning role. I think his starting days are finally behind him, so we'll be seeing smaller and more frequent doses of Perez. And for good reason: in his short major-league career, left-handers are hitting .106/.192/.170 off him. With those splits, even allowing for some league adjustment, how could you not leverage that?

Recalled OF Ben Francisco from Buffalo (AAA)

As I said before, I don't really think it's necessary to go with five outfielders, especially with a platoon no longer necessary in left field. Francisco is a practically perfect fourth outfielder, as he has a low-maintenance swing, can play each outfield position reasonably well, and can steal a base. He's eventually going to replace Jason Michaels, but since the Indians have several more years of options on him, Franklin Gutierrez should get much of the playing time made available thanks to David Dellucci's serious hamstring injury.

Pssh. If Totally Tribe can keep airing JD's Redneck Report segment, we can keep voting for an Oldberto write-up.

Re: Transactions
If Matt Miller does get the call at some point, who goes? Unless Stanford collapses in the pen, it won't be him. Could it be Mastny? Or does Francisco head back down.

As much as I like Miller (actually lukewarm about him), I don't like carrying 13 pitchers on staff and only 3 bench guys.

We'll see I guess.

Re: Transactions
Actually, to get M Miller up, someone would have to go down.

Right now: CC, Fausto, Byrd, Westbrook (activate on Sat), Lee in rotation; Borowski, Betancourt, Fultz, Perez, Mastny, Cabrera, Mujica (sent down when Westbrook is activated), and Stanford in the pen. So in order to call up Matt Miller, someone has to go. It could be an OF, but more than likely would be a pen arm. Based on options left, it would have to be Mastny or Perez.

I'm pretty much convinced there's a trade looming, so I'll save my speculation on roster set-up until it happens.

Re: Transactions
Does Perez's presence mean a slow phase out of Fultz or do we need two lefties in the pen?

by BoDiaz1974 on Jun 22, 2007 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

Re: Transactions
Perez appears capable of going two or more innings at a time and getting out righthanders.  Fultz stays as a LOOGY and Perez becomes one of the first guys out of the pen, or he may be moved into higher leverage situations on days Betancourt's not available.

Re: Transactions
Fultz, except for the bases loaded meltdowns, has been reasonably solid.

Re: Transactions
i tend to think fultz, with the low era and the sub-1 whip, would be regarded by many teams as valuable.  we might also regard him as expendable, given perez and the other lefty, stanford, (and possibly in the future, lee), already in the pen.

Re: Transactions
If you think we can let any bullpen arm go, let alone one of our only three reliable ones, you've been watching a different team than me.

And I think Stanford slots nicely into a long role, but I'm not convinced he can be a matchup lefty.  Soft-tossing control artists generally don't put the OO in LOOGY, if you know what I mean.

Re: Transactions
good points.  i am a bit perplexed, however, by the fact that wedge seemed very confident heading into the season that he would only need one LHP in the pen, but that now he has three and is considering a fourth, with lara yet to see ML time this year.

What's so perplexing?  He's stockpiling quality relievers, not lefties in particular.

Re: Transactions
one thing worth noting, i think, is that the indians are set to start a visiting NL series which usually requires more substitutions, so having francisco on the bench seems like less of an extra commoditiy than in AL play.  also, i think they're facing 2/3 lefty starters...

Re: Transactions
I think everyone gets too crazy with all these trade predictions. Our team is one of the top 5 in baseball in a division that's turning out to be not as tough as we had predicted.

The economic realities are that we are not going to get anyone of REAL value, because we are not selling any tickets despite our record.

The most we are going to do, is trade away someone that has fallen out of favor in the front office (Sowers, Marte being a likely candidates) in exchange for some other discount player that has fallen out of favor elsewhere.

Re: Transactions
I think you bring up good points, but I do recall Shapiro saying that he had an additional budget to pick up a player during the stretch run that was set aside in the offseason. I do think it is likely that we make a push for another bullpen arm.

We probably don't need big impact....
.... bats or arms. The positions that we're the weakest at, we get abysmal production. Upgrading to average production shouldn't be as hard as you might think.

Positional OPS

 C (Cleveland - .922, AL Avg. - .718)
1B (Cleveland - .762, AL Avg. - .807)
2B (Cleveland - .632, AL Avg. - .757)
3B (Cleveland - .743, AL Avg. - .772)
SS (Cleveland - .818, AL Avg. - .715)
LF (Cleveland - .765, AL Avg. - .729, this was a shocker)
CF (Cleveland - .867, AL Avg. - .747)
RF (Cleveland - .721, AL Avg. - .807)
DH (Cleveland - .846, AL Avg. - .793)

The good news is that we get great production at the 3 of the four lowest OPS positions - C, SS and CF.

Our most glaring deficiencies are at 2B and RF. Garko and Blake seem to have everything under control at 1B and 3B now.

Re: We probably don't need big impact....
Well put, but I disagree with you in regards to Barfield.  He's young, talented, and we have a lot of years of him left.  I can't imagine looking for a replacement three months into his first season.

A decent bullpen arm may be all we need.  Increased playing time by Gutz could push that OPS up by a bit, but maybe not as much as most people here want (Larry Bird is not walking through that door, people).

Re: We probably don't need big impact....
That LF number is not really all that shocking when you look at the players that are playing there (these are the starters for each of the teams, most games played):

Willits LAA, E Brown, KC, Kubel, MIN, Dellucci CLE, Payton BAL, Stewart OAK, Matsui NYY, Crawford TB, Catalanotto TEX, Monroe, DET, Ibanez SEA, Lind TOR, Manny BOS, Mackowiak CWS

Other notables: G Anderson LAA, Gibbons BAL, Ford MIN, Michaels CLE, Stairs TOR, Wilkerson TEX.

Out of all those guys, the only "studs" I would count are Matsui, Manny, Monroe, and probably Ibanez and Garrett when he's healthy. That is only 5 of 14. Uggh.

Re: Transactions
You're absolutely right, we should in no way try to improve this team.

Crazy trade predictions?  I'm not sure if we're reading the same threads, but I've seen mostly bullpen arm swaps ... No Mark Teixeira type deals.

The economic realities are that we are not going to get anyone of REAL value

I think this is where you misuse the word "value."  Because if we did get someone of little cost who had fallen out of favor elsewhere*, and then they proved a successful piece of the team, that's great value.  That's the definition of value.

*I still like David Aardsma.

Re: Transactions
I was going to suggest Teixeira ... but then I realized he can't be considered seriously for 3B anymore ... but then I realized it wouldn't be crazy to upgrade our 1B situation.

And now I'm just confused.

Teixeira is an extended rental, and not a cheap one.    It won't take an elite pitching prospect.

It's still early and I'm starting to hear Twins footsteps.

And what ever happened to the Foulke money ($5m) that we didn't spend?  I would imagine there's still a few shekels in the bank for a good set-up man/corner outfielder/DH if one should suddenly become available.

The Twins look to have the easiest schedule between now and the break, among the Tigers, Indians and Twins, so they could indeed make up some ground.

Re: Transactions
The economic realities are that if the team made a big trade to put a name player on the field, even for half a season as a rental, many in the public would perceive that as Dolan spending money on the team and they would be more, not less, likely to buy tickets.

Unfortunately, many Cleveland fans are still getting over the way the late 90s juggernaut team was dismantled by free agency, despite Dolan's offers to Ramirez and Thome that were really more than he could afford.  The perception of many is that they won't believe in the Indians until Dolan shows them the money by bringing in a star.

Sad, but unfortunately true.  Cleveland fans were spoiled by the late 90s teams and may not come back until and unless another juggernaut is built, or the team is in a tight pennant race late in the season.

Re: Transactions
Trying to figure out our anemic gates is next to impossible - kinda like figuring out what's wrong with Hafner.

If the Indians were in Pittsburg or Houston or San Fransisco or Dallas they'd be selling out. Only in Florida would I expect such low turn-outs.

Good baseball in the 90's should not diminish attendance for good baseball now.  The weather's great, the kids are outta school and the Tribe's in the middle of a pennant race.  I find the current low attendance inexcusable.

Sometimes you just gotta be lucky
