Confirmed!  Jensen Lewis being called up

I have it on "friend of a friend" authority that Jensen Lewis is being called up today as the corresponding move to Mujica's demotion.  (My buddy's old boss is Jensen's dad.)  I presume this means a few things.  I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds spreading what's not technically news yet.  (And I trust it's pretty reliable, but there's always a chance it's not.)

It also means he needs to be added to the 40-man roster, which means someone's got to go.  Dellucci to the 60-day DL?  Luna gets the boot?  And of course it means neither Fultz nor M. Miller are ready to go yet.

UPDATE: Lewis himself has spilled the beans in, of all places, his Facebook entry.  In other news, Jensen is "interested in women."  [Jay]

UPDATE: And now, five hours later, an actual press release.  Apparently we really do belong on Google News.  Ed Mujica was optioned to Buffalo to make room on the active 25-man roster.  To make room on the 40-man roster, Dave Dellucci was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.  [Jay]

Re: Scoop: Jensen Lewis being called up
Wow, I hadn't realized how filthy Lewis had been this year, but I looked up his stats on b-r (it's here, you'll have to find him on the page). The big ones are a 0.94 WHIP and 10.56 K/9 (combined with a very nice 3.59 K/BB ratio).

Hopefully he can hold his own up at the bigs, but we'll see.

Re: Scoop: Jensen Lewis being called up
Seems like the promotion to Buffalo only inspired him to do better.  Hope we see him.

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
I know the 40 is a big deal but I don't understand why we've got guys like Koplove on it if we're not willing to jettison them immediately to get our best options (as in players who are choices, not options) up.

If they think Lewis is ready for the bigs and can help the team win more than anyone else in AAA, then what's the big deal with just cutting one of the 4 or 5 guys who we basically signed with the intention of cutting?

by afh4 on Jul 13, 2007 10:47 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
There's enough chaff on the 40-man right now (Luna, Lara, Koplove, etc) that bumping someone off the roster wouldn't be too worrisome.

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
That is true, but Jensen doesn't even need to be added this offseason if he isn't called up -- so adding him now effectively exposes one more guy to the Rule 5 in December.  Again, like the Super 2 stuff, this is not going to be the main criterion, but they won't burn that roster spot carelessly.

If they're calling him up, it's because they've become convinced that they're going to end up using him this season at some point regardless.

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
I don't see why they wouldn't believe that anyway. He would shore up our bullpen very nicely. Who needs to trade for power bullpen arms when you can do it from within, right?

by Joe. on Jul 13, 2007 11:26 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
This is speculation only, but if they do this move and are wanting to see what he can do, does it indicate that there is some hope in the FO that they've found trade partner for a bat and are aggressively looking for an in-house solution for the bullpen?

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
Amazing - thanks for the tip AngG!

When I saw the post title I thought: I don't think so. Mujica and Lewis both pitched an inning last night, and Fultz says he fells fine now and there;s the 40 man, etc. Interesting to see how this plays...

One thing it does show is something I've been musing about - that the reluctance to overpay for help, particularly in the form of prospects/young players, will make Shap and Wedge give more playing time to "da youth" (sometimes the very prospects being asked for) in order to see exactly what they have and if they can do the job from within.

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
In the original edition of Facebook (back when it had a "The"), any time one of your friends made an addition or change to his or her profile, you would discover it via a list of your "Recently Updated" friends, in reverse chronological order. In order to find out what change they made -- whether they were announcing that they broke up with their steady, or just that their new favorite movie was "Sweet Home Alabama"*, you wouldn't find out until you clicked through to their profile.

In nuevo Facebook, the default privacy settings are that every change you make in your profile is listed for your friends in a kind of Wall Street Journal front-page ticker. ("Tim updated his favorite books. 12:54 a.m.") So many of us discovered that our friends were dating or breaking up via the statement "Kevin updated his relationship status." This is also a particularly crushing way to discover that a girl you like is off the market. Or so they say.

*Absolute best line I ever heard in college came from a conversation two girls were having behind me in line at the caf: "Tim IMed me at 3 a.m. this morning and said, 'I just finished watching Sweet Home Alabama and I want to be in love.'"

While we're explaining Facebook to Jay...the Interested In prompt only allows the answer "men" or "women" (or, you know, both). There are open-ended "Activities" and "Interests" prompts further down the profile.

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
Ok, so if he is getting the call, who does get dropped to AAA? It can't be Mujica, he just got sent down so Fultz can be activated. It's not Borowski, Betancourt, Perez, or Fultz. Cabrera and Stanford are out of options. Could it be Mastny?

Re: Unconfirmed: Jensen Lewis being called up
As is said in the original post, the grape vine believes Lewis is swapping with Mujica.  Which would mean Fultz isn't quite ready.

Great detective work, guys!
Hello everyone,

Of course, when I say "guys," I mean "guys" figuratively.  :-)  Nice job breaking the Jensen Lewis call-up before it was officially publicized.

Hmm... this must mean Fultz isn't ready yet or he's had some type of setback, unless Fultz just needs a rehab appearance or two, which means Lewis might only be here for this weekend or for the homestand, which runs through the middle of next week.

Either way, it's nice to see Lewis get a chance; as I've mentioned before, between Lewis, and the Millers, we have 3 nice bullpen arms to consider using before we have to consider "paying" for a reliever.  I also agree that with all the "fluff" on the 40-man, losing someone like a Koplove, Koronka, or even a Luna wouldn't likely be devastating, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Adam Miller up at some point as well, even in the bullpen at the same time with Lewis, especially if Mastny has further trouble or if the Indians feel Cabrera cannot come around consistently enough to help out in these last few months and he's used in some trade.

Just a thought on that - not saying Cabrera is definitely gone, but it could be an option to get a power bat if the Indians decide to go that route or get a reliever like Otsuka, Dotel, or Gagne.  It'd probably take someone like Cabrera to pry one of those arms away (especially Otsuka or Gagne.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)
