Laffey to Cleveland

Aaron Laffey was removed after 2.2 innings and specific # of pitches in the first game of a Buffalo doubleheader today.

The Buffalo announcers said that they got the word he was heading to Cleveland. I didn't get many details, not sure if they knew much, but the impression I got was that he was being brought up to make a spot start sometime during the next week.

Could be a showcase for a trade, or a trade already completed, could be just to rest someone, I don't know - but the Buffalo/Cleveland shuttle is going into high gear as the brass looks to improve the team one way or the other.

Who do we think he's replacing, Cabrera?

There's no double header or anything for him to be doing a spot start.  And Lee's troubles not withstanding, they're not going to be pulling the plug on him yet, are they?

If Cliff's the one being sent down, this won't end up pretty. The guy already seems touchy as it is (although he always sounds pleasant in his post-game interviews), how will he respond to a demotion? My guess is not well. Regardess, he certainly deserves it.

Wow, regardless of who gets moved, the wheels are in motion.  I commend the front office for trying new solutions, whether it be playing Laffey or trading him (which might be as likely as him pitching in Cleveland).  While we may be able to complain about the move, we won't be able to complain about inactivity.  Good times.

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
FYI, I didn't listen to the whole game after hearing them speculate about when he would pitch in Cleveland, but did tune in for the post-game show and the announcer's didn't bring it up, so its quite unofficial and unconfirmed at this point.

I checked around and there was a mention of it on Fanhome forum, where someone had been listening to the game and said the announcers had said he was heading to Cleveland.

That's all at this point. BTW, they did interview Sowers post-game about his stellar start, and he said he hasn't felt like he's been in any kind of rhythm since the first start of the year in Cleveland, and that Fri nite was the best he's felt all year(not surprising, since it was the best he's pitched all year). It struck me I've never actually heard him talk at length. He is the most un-baseball-player interviewee I've ever heard in uniform - very high geek-to-jock ratio. For this reason alone I like him.

I've found some additional fuel for the fire on the Laffey-to-Cleveland rumor via the print media - the Buffalo News:

"Speculation has arisen that Laffey may have hurled a shortened stint due to a callup by the Cleveland Indians although no official announcement has been made."

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
What I couldn't figure out was why the short outing? He's never pitched in the pen, so wherever he's going its as a starter. Why give him one third of a start?

Also the fact hat he's actually been held back from his usual spot preceding Sowers, so something's been going on where a trigger was waiting to get pulled.

My guess is that the call was made while he was on the mound, and a trade involving him has been consummated. Somebody watched him strike out 5 guys in 2.2 innings and said ok.

That's my story right now, at least. If so, its a pretty big trade for someone to immediately help the big club.

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
I have to admit that it's a bit odd that they would call him up on the same day that he started a game.    If it's for a spot start this week there would be no reason to call him up today.  I would guess that he's either being called up to pitch in the pen or that he's been involved in a trade.

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
I'm reading it as they put him on a 50-pitch count (He was pulled at 48 pitches), as to throw him on three days rest at the major league level.  That would put him in Cliff Lee's spot in the Indians rotation by my math.

Sure. Should be easy to pick up a few aces for the back end of the rotation. Think the Twins would go for a package of Francisco/Lofgren for Santana, or would they be too afraid to trade with a intradivision rival?

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
Of all the possibilities, I think laffey coming to cleveland to be a reliever is the least likely.  For that there would be no real reasoning behind pulling him early in his start.

It would still be pretty peculiar if he was called up to be a starter.

Unless there's something i'm missing, all signs point to him being traded.

Basically that Cliff got on Vic a little about the passed ball/wild pitch and Vic came back with something along the lines of it would have been nice if his mistake mattered instead of being far enough behind in the game thanks to Cliff's pitching.  Something of that sort was what he thought happened.

This is no big deal. Now if CC and Vic throw down, then maybe that is a sign of a larger problem. I like the sparks, means we want to win...Or Cliff is just a dick. If he goes-AAA, another team, who cares? I trust Shapiro will do the right thing.

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
While a trade is certainly possible, I don't think it would be a trade for Lofton or even a solid reliever.  As a 22 year-old starter who has blossomed after moving up a level, he's a very valuable commodity.  Why trade for a non-elite reliever when you think Laffey might pitch just as well?  If anything, he is the kind of player that you package for a good ML starter, which isn't the sort of trade mentioned so far in this thread.

Mind you, I'm not saying he will be traded at all - just that if he is, it might be a bigger deal than we've anticipated.

As far as I'm concerned, I think Vic needs to get in "More" face, not less. I really think it's time for him to get in CC's face about how he has been pitching lately. Actually, he hasn't been pitching, he's been throwing. And the worse things get the harder he throws. Vic needs to get this turned around.

I think CC's mechanics do look a bit off and he
does look like he is throwing more, but I'm not sure Victor has to get in CC's face; just those two working on it together will hopefully get CC straightened out.

In other words, no offense, CC is not nearly the problem Lee is; CC's last 3 outings are more likely a little mini-slump which virtually every pitcher goes through, even a #1 like CC (Beckett, Santana, Haren, Verlander, Bonderman, Zambrano, Peavy, etc. have had similar slumps.)  Lee, on the other hand, has been like this all this year, and even a good portion of last year as well, and from what I've heard, more than CC, Lee is sometimes too stubborn for his own good, not listening to his coaches and to his catcher, which is why I think Victor got in his face.

I'm not saying CC's struggles can be ignored, but I think Lee is a bigger problem right now because I'm not as confident in his ability to bounce back as I am in CC's ability to bounce back, based on his track record.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

This is getting out of hand to the point that I can't even keep straight who is making legitimate points and who is talking out of their ass here. We almost need some kind of Stupidity Power Rankings where a reference is available to see whether someone's comments are generally ridiculous. I think we all know who gets the top spot by unanimous decision.

And I hope it's not myself haha.

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
I'd laugh if we were all jumping the gun and Laffey was being called up and Ben Francisco--who has not seen a lot of time lately--was being sent back to Buffalo. Going with 12 position players is a stretch, but, well, I'll play the speculation game too...

Michaels being in the lineup versus a RHP seems a bit odd, so perhaps Francisco is involved in some kind of roster move? In case anyone hasn't noticed, the Rangers aren't exactly deep in the OF in the majors or minors. It would seem that Francisco (for one) would be a nice right-hand hitting platoon-mate to lefties Frank Catalanotto and/or Brad Wilkerson, no?

Just thinking out loud...

wedge wouldnt send down francisco...he stressed the point that he wants to give his regulars some rest....so that doesnt realy make sense, especially since we havent used lewis that much....btw lofton is in the lineup....but GARKO isnt!!! hope hes only getting some rest....

Garko sitting is common when Byrdman pitches

by Roger Dorn on Jul 22, 2007 8:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
Garko not being in lineup is likely the result of (a) Shoppach being Byrd's personal catcher and (b) Tejada's splits -- lefties crush him. Thus, putting another lefty (switch) stick in the lineup makes perfect sense.

Of course, I could be wrong...

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
It certainly could, but so could being pulled from a game, etc.  At some point, the athlete has to 'look in the mirror' and become accountable.  Again, we're still speculating (wildly), but as I mentioned earlier, it's good to see that the front office is not complacent and is (by all accounts) exploring options -- in this case, some minor league arms, apparently.

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
You're right. Before we know anymore, the biggest thing you can take away is a little reassurance that Shapiro and Co. are looking for other options. But it's always fun to speculate.

Re: Laffey to Cleveland
Reading between the lines it is Lee who's getting dealt. Lovullo was a litle coy in the postgame comments, but he made it clear Laffey was staying in the organization as a starter. If he leaves Buffalo, he's going into Cleveland's starting rotation.

It looks like it would be Lee - no other candidate. Lovullo said he didn't get the call to put Laffey on the pitch count until AFTER last night's game in Texas, as if that was significant.

Good observation - I had not noticed that!
Hello MikeCP,

Nice job observing that - hmm, that certainly stirs up the pot a bit doesn't it?  Did the Indians have plans on Laffey taking someone else's spot before Lee "blew up" last night and now they're reconsidering sending Lee down?

It will be interesting to see who stays and who goes, but at this point, it certainly seems like Laffey will come up to Cleveland soon.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Maybe resting Carmona since I imagine he has to be reaching or on pace to far exceed his highest pitch count for a season

Sound and Fury
From this morning's PD, here:

When left-hander Aaron Laffey left his start for Class AAA Buffalo on Sunday after 2 2/3 innings, there was speculation he was getting promoted to Cleveland. Laffey (7-3) has won seven straight decisions for Buffalo.

The Indians said Laffey is on their radar but isn't Cleveland bound.

Laffey was scheduled to start Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against Syracuse. A water pipe burst and flooded the field, and the doubleheader was postponed. Laffey, however, had gone through his full warm-up before the postponement, so the Indians put him on a 50-pitch limit for Sunday's start.

What sounds fishy to me is...
the fact that that water pipe supposedly broke during the time between Laffey warmed up and the start of the game, yet there was so much water that it flooded the field and prevented them from playing the DH.  Something just doesn't seem to add up there - could it just be very bad timing?  What are the chances that the water pipe would break at that exact moment and gush out that much water to ruin the field for that DH?

Partly why I'm suspicious is because of the post made by Fundamentals of MinorLeagueBall here.  He seems to have found a lot of inconsistencies regarding that story.

I suppose it could have happened that way, but it seems like a lot of unfortunate luck was involved if that's how that occurred.

Just wondering and my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: What sounds fishy to me is...
I think the water pipe broke and flooded Laffey's locker, all while he was warming up. That explains his empty locker, his 2.2 innings, and incorporates a flood.
