Transactions

Reinstated LHP Aaron Fultz from the 15-day Disabled List

Designated RHP Fernando Cabrera for Assignment

Two years ago, I thought Cabrera was one of the best prospects in the organization. And even given the generous benefit of hindsight, I still believe he's an extremely talented pitcher. At the time, Cabrera had just finished a season split between Buffalo and Cleveland, and had fared well in both places. He had forced his way into an excellent bullpen, and seemed poised to take on a more important role in 2006. That he was out of options made it a dead certainty he would make the roster.

Unfortunately, the same mechanism which forced him into the big leagues eventually led to his departure from the organization. Aside from a wink-wink rehab stint in early 2006, Cabrera's been in the majors because he had to be. Yes, if he had pitched well, this wouldn't be an issue. But Cabrera is just 25 years old, and could still be reasonably classified as a young, promising pitcher. He has a serious problem spotting his fastball, which serves as a setup pitch for his vicious splitter. Whoever can get his mechanics in order will have themselves a dominant relief pitcher.

Cabrera will be very enticing to any team out of contention, teams who can afford to let Cabrera get regular innings and figure it out through trial-and-error. He won't pass through waivers. To make this move now makes little sense, since I believe he can't be traded without also passing through revocable waivers. I know the team's in a pennant race, and that having a useless pitcher in the bullpen's a problem. But the move came at an inopportune time - why not DFA him a week earlier, and force the issue on the trade market?

Re: Transactions
Maybe Terry Pluto will write a book about it five years, but I (as well as others) wonder about Shapiro's comments during that half inning about "getting Wedge a reliever and going on vacation", almost as if it was a done deal, and then nothing happening at the deadline. Would a deal being in place that included F-Cab, (a deal that Shapiro felt confident would happen) all of the sudden fall through and leave us with the present situation of DFA'ing F-Cab post trading deadline? Would something like lead to F-Cab not being DFA'd before the deadline?

Re: Transactions
This is pure speculation, but I have an idea.  I do believe that Shapiro thought he had a deal locked up during the STO broadcast.  It's just bad business for a man as smart as Shapiro to spout like that and risk coming up empty-handed.  We know he was on the phone with Dayton Moore earlier that day.

I like to picture it happening like this:  Moore and Shapiro have a deal in place that sends Francisco to KC for Dotel.  There may have been other moving parts involved, but this is the main deal.  With the amount these two names were being mentioned together in rumor mills (especially among credible sources like Rosenthal), I have to believe there was some truth to it.  So, OK, the deal's in place.  Moore gets a call from Atlanta, where he used to work, offering Davies.  Moore has a strong relationship with the Braves FO and knows Davies' profile personally.  It's a very intriguing offer.  He tells Shapiro that, sorry, he's starting to lean in another direction.  The next couple of days are spent haggling.  It ends when Moore says, "Listen, Mark, if you want Dotel, I need Gutierrez."  Shapiro is unwilling to give Gutierrez up, and trade talks end on a very sour note.

I'd at least like to think this is how it happened.

Re: Transactions
Yeah I can see that, And I in no way blame shapiro in a scenario like that for doing what he did.

Re: Transactions
You weren't alone in thinking FC was a very exciting young arm two years ago, a closer in waiting. I'm definitely in that cohort. In fact, I'd lay down money that a lot of scouts employed by major league budgets thought the same. And you could argue that that hasn't changed in terms of his projection. As he leaves the 25 man, he has 39 K's in 33 innings. He is the definition of filthy when he's on, and he's had at least two stretches in the bigs where he proved it.

It's pretty obvious its a matter of a tweak in mechanics and some confidence and he could be a big payoff. But we couldn't afford to keep him on the roster, as evidenced by DFA.

Now my vent, with the proviso that not all criticisms are based on habitual "we're cursed and I'm going to salivate now" reflex: WhyTF didn't Shap spend the prospects he's been cultivating to get a relief pitcher with some experience that could have been in the spot where Jensen Lewis was tonite? I kept looking at Benoit shutting us down and saying to my junior GM self, we could have had  him in our own dugout. Yesterday.

FCab has value and could have been included in a package to fill the shoes Lewis was forced to step into tonite. He made mistakes you'd expect from a guy who went from AA to a tight ML game where there's a lot on the line. We are past the point where we should even be in that situation - the core team is here now and in a playoff race and we needed a bullpen arm and Shap could have gotten one and didn't. Cabrera and Francisco have a lot of value and should have been on the table at a minimum for anything that would help this team to the playoffs. I have no idea what offers were out there, but I have a hard time believing that we couldn't have swung a deal for a decent arm with some experience.

Vent over. I'm sure Shap isn't relaxing just yet. And he can only affect so much - the onus is on the guys playing on the field. They just have to play better so that facebook doesn't get put in that situation to begin with.

Re: Transactions
Shapiro made a very revealing comment that said, in essence, that having been part of the Brian Giles for Ricardo Rincon trade, he vowed never to trade an everyday major league player for a reliever.  Ever.  And that's what it sounds like it would have taken to get Dotel.

Re: Transactions
Right.  Ever.

Except Brandon Phillips for Jeff Stevens, of course.

No doubt Shapiro regrets that whole situation now, but he really needs to reconcile the one principle with the other.  If it's really such a horrible thing to trade an everyday player for a reliever, then by extension, it must also be a horrible thing to put yourself in a position where you feel you have to do so.

Heh. Feels better knowing that I wasn't the only one ruminating on this while I listened to the awful finale of tonight's game.

Been stuck in airports, terrorized. Sent to meetings, hypnotized. Overexposed, commercialized.

Re: Transactions
At this point, I would trade the Indians bullpen for the Rangers bullpen, even without Gagne.

Re: Transactions
Do we do this a lot relative to other teams?  Is it a function of trying to hoard talent and then painting yourself in a corner?  This is particularly frustrating since we didn't bring a reliever in last week.

Re: Transactions
I think a lot of teams have been doing that lately, realizing the value of prospects is that much greater given the salaries that established stars are commanding. The GM of the Angels (Bill Stoneman) gets a lot of flak for holding onto his hyped prospects long past their sell-by date & then having them not pan out (see: Ervin Santana, Jeff Mathis). I do think there's a time/place to trade prospects because they don't always pan out, so you might as well get what you can out of them.

But I also think that of all the things to overpay for, overpaying for a reliever makes the least sense. Sure, we all love Joaquin Benoit, but he's a 29 year old reliever/failed starter who's having his best season ever, basically. You look at a guy like that & say, you know, I bet we could dig up someone  too, why the hell would we part with Guttierrez (or whatever) for this dude?

Re: Transactions
I have to agree. The timing of the move makes little, if any, sense.

Re: Transactions
My best guess, is that Shap already had some preliminary talks in the works going into the July 31 deadline, Wedge finally said he couldn't wait anymore, and Shap DFAed him trying to complete earlier deals that he had discussions on.
