Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
what exactly does blake hitting 2nd do for this lineup?  i think the better lineup is: Lofton, Grady, Vic, Garko, Hafner, Peralta, Gutz/Nixon/Blake hitting 7-8, Cabrera
But what do I know.  I just look at the move of Sizemore to 3rd while keeping Blake 2nd as a way of taking at bats away from Grady and giving them to Casey

Barf's indefinitely benched, with Gomez and Droob getting his starts. Dunno how long that's going to keep up, though.

I say as long as AstroCab's able to outhit Barf, might as well give him the job.

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
yeah I totally agree with letting AstroCab play a lot after seeing how he's played so far. But, are they just giving up on Barf now? Maybe he's the guy who is getting shipped out when we need a 5th starter.

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
2B-men are a weak lot, probably the weakest hitters by position these days, but Barf's hitting declined to a level where I think Rouse might very well be his equal given similar chances.  I can't believe how bad he was.  AstroCab seems like a good bet to at match or improve upon Barfield's showing, and his glove is superior to Josh's as well.

I don't know what to make of Barfield just yet.  I find his collapse and pending demotion to be the most surprising event of this season.

by homelytourist on Aug 21, 2007 6:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
How soon we forget how bad Rouse was.  As bad as Barfield was, and as small as the sample was for Rouse, it nonetheless is highly unlikely that Rouse could outhit Barfield.  You might want to take a look at their prior track records if you doubt this.  There's no reason to think Rouse will ever do what Barfield did post-Break in 2006.

Also!  Barfield's benching, like Marte's demotion, is more opportunistic than anything.  If AstroCab had not made himself an option, I expect Josh would be sharing starts with Gomez.

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
Ok, similar adjectives apply to both Rouse and Barfield but the numbers do seperate them a little.

Let's see, Josh:
K rate up.  ISO discipline and power (!) down. The trendline looks a lot like Kaz Matsui's, albeit without the league change.

The lynchpin is plate discipline.  If he restores what he's back in business as a league average 2B.  Tony Womack with fewer SB.

Not sure wht a RHH like Barfield would share starts with a RHH like Gomez, but I'll take your word for it.
