It's time for an Indians matinee . . . and soup kitchens around the country, and perhaps even the world, are experiencing a subtle increase in sales . . . .

Big game today in the standings.  A win puts us 2.5 games up, and we play the Royals while they play the Yankees.  A chance for us to open up a nice little cushion by next week.

What sucks is that I get the feeling that it doesn't matter whether or not we get out of this inning.  We're not going to score in the top half anyway, so they'll get us next inning.  Or the inning after that.  When you have no faith in your offense, these road extra-inning games are just unbearable.

sportsclubstats.com does a good job of this.  theyre one of the places that daily recalculates playoff percentages.  today was a huge game because if we won it would increase our chances somthing near 8%, and they would go down by a similar number if we lost.  i dont know what their methodology is, but i started going there more than coolstandings.com lately.  mostly bc they had more neat stuff to play with and more information, but also bc sportsclubstats had the indians with consistently highger playoff % than coolstandings did.  baseballprospectus has a good one that uses PECOTA on their site too.  i think that one helps us out bc im sure some of our guys right now are way below what PECOTA predicted for them

Watched the first 6 innings of last night's game while buzzed in a Detroit Airport bar. Scoring 7 runs in an inning while tipsy in the opponent's airport had to rank right up there with the greatest twenty minutes I've spent in a while.

A-men. I'd really like to see some momentum. I want this team to believe it can win every game, like it did early this year; the cardinals showed us last year that its not the team with the best record, but rather the team that's the hottest in the playoffs that does it.

Re: Game Thread: August 23, 2007
Here's another ESPN complaint.  In their video recap of the game (here) they show Perez striking out Granderson in the 9th to end the inning and the commentator says, "that was the only strikeout on the day for Perez".  Well, it was also the only batter he faced.  If they just looked at a boxscore and saw he had one K, presumably they also saw he only pitched 0.1 innings.  Obviously it's not a big deal, but it just strikes me as symptomatic of the total crapitude that currently is ESPN.

Re: Game Thread: August 23, 2007
Joel Zumaya... welcome back. Two of three in Detroit is very solid. Still love this team.
"We've talked about it so many times," Wedge said, "but this is a special group."

by CarnegieAndOntario on Aug 23, 2007 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

ESPN doesn't know what's going on - they're
too worried about the Yankees and Red Sox, as usual.

Hello APV,

That definitely strikes me as bad journalism, especially for "professionals."  Heck, any of us can glance at the boxscore and figure out that Perez only faced one batter and struck him out.  With a bit more analysis, any of us could also figure out that that was a key moment in this ballgame, without even watching the game.  Yet, these "professionals" can't even comprehend that, even though they're paid to do that - unbelieveable!

I wish they would take off the Red Sox-Yankee blinders on their eyes - there are other teams in this race; and heck, the Yankees wouldn't even make the postseason if the playoffs started today.

As for the game today, it was nice to see Lofton and Gomez come up with those clutch hits, off Zumaya no less.  Gutierrez played great defense (though still has to keep working on that plate discipline.)  I'm glad to see Westbrook is rounding back into form and shut down a team that has given him fits over the last few years - well done!

As for Borowski - Ugh!  Yes, he got his league-leading 36th save (tied for the lead,) but why does he have to make it so close all the time - he was fortunate to get out of that and not have it blow up in his face like it did in TB on Sunday, and like that one, the trouble here also started with two outs.  At least here though, the snowball started off by JoBo giving up a hit to the league's highest BA hitter, Magglio Ordonez, and not by walking the #9, barely-hitting .200, Dioner Navarro like JoBo did on Sunday.

Still though, I don't feel that comfortable with Borowski; if the Indians can't find an upgrade for Borowski for 2008, I sure hope they'd strongly consider going with Betancourt or Perez in the closer's role - at the very least, give them a chance to compete for it with Borowski (presuming his option gets picked up.)  I like their stuff much better than I do Borowski's.

Now, I hope the Indians can take at least two from KC, but they're NOT going to roll over for us, as they have been playing better of late (they are tied for the best record in the AL Central the last 10 games with us and the Twins at 5-5.)  We need to play well to win this series.  Meanwhile, the Yankees face the Tigers; I just hope we can build this division lead by a few more games by the time this weekend is over - hopefully, the pitching remains strong and the offense proves that Wednesday night's outburst was no fluke.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread: August 23, 2007
i haven't been able to watch this series, but it's comforting to know that the Tigers' level of suck is higher than the Indians'.

in the spirit of soup, i added Mr. Zumaya to my fantasy team the day he came off the DL in hopes that my $#!7 luck would cause him to implode utterly, die under mysterious circumstances, or get re-injured like every other pitcher i've owned this season. i've also had Todd Jones all year, and it's worked out fairly well for the Tribe.

More good vibes for the day...

Scott Lewis, who has had a good, but not sensational season at Akron so far is putting up his best outing of the season tonight (6IP,1R,1BB,8K).  Michael Aubrey, now that I've dismissed him, is 3-3 with not one, but two home runs.  Trevor Crowe is 3-4, bringing him to the cusp of a .700 OPS.  And Stephen Head, fresh off my thrashing is 3-3 with two doubles.
