Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Indians 8, White Sox 3

Recap
Box Score
Win Probability Added @ Fangraphs

Highest WPA:

Ryan Garko .229
Travis Hafner .188
Grady Sizemore .124

Lowest WPA:

Franklin Gutierrez -.119
Jason Michaels -.079
Paul Byrd -.050

The Indians have been a relentless bunch of late, and they weren't about to suffer wildness from their opposition. John Danks was dispatched quickly, and after that happened, good things were bound to happen. Altogether, the Indians walked 10 times (twice with the bases loaded) and forced White Sox pitchers to throw over 200 pitches.

I think Eric Wedge is -this- close from inducting Jensen Lewis into his Circle of Trust. He brought Lewis into a jam in the seventh inning, and Jensen blew away both Andy Gonzalez and Jerry Owens. Lewis' peripherals after 21.2 innings are pretty good: 23 hits, 24 strikeouts, and 8 walks.

6.5 games up, seventeen to play.

Next Up: Westbrook vs. Vazquez 2:05 PM

This is for you sbricker:

The Indians would have to go 6-11 and the Tigers would have to go 12-4 to catch us.

Re: 8, White Sox 3
Reading the Detroit Free Press stories (and the Tigers blogs) provides an interesting perspective. They're hanging all their hopes on catching the Yankees for the wild card. They've completely given up on the pennant. How quickly things change.

I'd take that infield today for the day game.  We've already won the series, why not give Casey and Jhonny a rest?

I've also just wanted to see Marte in a game for a while now.

Jen-Lew's WHIP is not great for a reliever, by any stretch (SSS warning.)

But I'm pumped: we be ROLLING!

Re: It's annoying when subj is too long
His FIP is actually 2.89. I'm just worried about him hardly ever using his slider. Isn't it supposed to be his breakthrough pitch? I don't think he even used it once today. Something is up with that.

Re: It's annoying when subj is too long
well when every hitter sits there and takes his fastball straight over the plate because they can't tell the difference between it and a slider, I don't blame him.

Re: It's annoying when subj is too long
Can you imagine how effective he'd be if he had a decent change up?

by MTF on Sep 12, 2007 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Re: It's annoying when subj is too long
I've wondered that also in some previous games.  But tonight he was right not to throw anything but fastballs because the hitters were not catching up to them, I think partly because of his deceptive delivery, and partly because he had great location.  When he's pitching like that he's like Raffy B, and anything but fastball is giving the hitter a break.  When the hitter starts fouling his fastball straight back, or pulling it foul, then he can go to his changeup or slider.

I've been so giddy from winning, I haven't even noticed that Asdrubal has a 10 game hitting streak, in which he is batting .359, 6 BB and 9 runs scored.

Re: -Five: Indians 8, White Sox 3
Yeah, I was surprised to notice the walks.  He only walked one time in his first 17 games, and while he'd whacked some great hits, it didn't look too promising.

But since August 31, he's walked seven times in only 50 PA -- like he's back in A-ball or something, waiting for the pitcher to finally throw something decent.

His numbers are now comparable to Cano and Pedroia -- and while they've got he track record, he's by far the youngest.  Factor in the defense, and he's got a chance to be the league's best middle infielder.

Re: Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Indians 8, White
I realize no one cares, but I thought I'd show by example how much I love this team right now. I am in my fantasy league semifinals, beating up on the 2nd seed (I am seeded 6). My lineup includes the following Indians:

2b-Astrocab
OF-Grady
OF-Franklin
RP-Bettancourt
RP-Perez

Clearly the most Indians on anyone's team in the league.

Go Tribe!

Re: Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Indians 8, White
Yea, I'm in a Yahoo Pub league and picked up Carmona and Betancourt back in May. I went from last place (12 team league) to first place.

I am thinking about picking up Ascab, but I have Rollins, Young, Braun and Sanchez in my infield.

Re: Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Indians 8, White
I'm in a 4x4 mixed league, but my lineup has:
CC
Garko
JP
Grady
Vic
Borowski

I may be a homer, but i'm in second place and closing, and most of those guys are fantasy studs. (Considering Borowski was a 15th rounder, JP plays a premium position, Grady has 31 steals, and Garko was a waiver wire pickup)

God truly does hate cleveland sports.

Re: Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Indians 8, White
I suppose as long as we're all doing it...

I have two leagues, one mixed, one AL-only. In the AL league, I drafted Jhonny and Westbrook.  I traded Jhonny when he started hot for Jered Weaver.  I picked Garko off the waivers when Marte's injury moved Casey permanently to third.  Oddly enough I traded both Westbrook and Garko at the deadline for ManRam (that didn't work out as well as the Jhonny trade).  I missed the playoffs by a single game.  Raffy Perez was one of several LIMA-type relievers I added to the team.

In the mixed league I have AstroCab, a waiver-wire pickup after Howie Kendrick went on the DL.  I drafted Hafner.  That one didn't turn out so well, but both are still on my team.  I'm in first place.

So that's two leagues, 6 total Indians, three of whom stayed on my teams.

But I digress.

Re: Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Indians 8, White
I don't think having Betancourt and Perez out there takes any particular love for the Indians.

If you really loved the Tribe, you'd have Lofton up there, too.

by Jay on Sep 12, 2007 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game One Hundred Forty-Five: Indians 8, White
Trust me, I've been toying with the idea of Lofton, but for awhile he seemed to be platooning. Plus there's are the power numbers to consider. I also have Byrnes, Alou, and for awhile, Hawpe. Alou has been on a tear since he got off the DL. Byrnes helps with the SB category. I dumped Hawpe, thinking that the teams out of contention are soon going to tire or quit. So far the philosophy has worked.

I clearly don't know what I'm doing, but now it seems to be working.

Re: Game One
This is probably not worth it's own diary.

RHP Paul Byrd is writing what he calls a "spiritual journal'' that he is going to have published in book form and hopes to have on the market by spring training. It's called "The Free Byrd Project,'' a candid and graphic look at how he has managed to remain true to his faith despite the pitfalls associated with a ballplayer's daily lifestyle. "It's not politically correct. It's not for a 10-year-old. It's not a bubble gum-feel good book. It's only for a certain audience,'' Byrd said. "It's more of a personal account of things I've struggled with - conversations I've had with Atheist ballplayers, coming clean with some issues I've had, like struggling with pornography on road trips when you're missing your wife - all those things you encounter because of this lifestyle. So it's not a book that shows me as having it all together. But it's not going to point fingers or sell anybody out. If anything, it's going to just be me selling myself out a little bit with some of my struggles.''

Re: Game One
I remember the stink that Fox Sports made in 2005 about the Angels sending Byrd ahead of the team to be ready to start Game 1 of the ALCS in Anaheim the next day when the team was playing Game 5 of the ALDS in New York.

They made a big deal about how, with his strong religious background, he wouldn't be out partying in L.A.

I know McCarver and Buck never have much insight for the game, but that struck me as a new low.  I can't think of a pitcher this side of David Wells who wouldn't want a good night's sleep before that start (and Boomer probably pitched better with a hangover anyway).

Still, it may be interesting to flip through Byrd's book in the Cafe section of my local Barnes & Noble, but I doubt I would buy it.

Re: Game One
I'm shocked to hear that about the porn. But did he say "addiction?" I don't care what your religion is, if your wife isn't around and you gotta rub one out, better porn than the A-Rod procedure.

You think the Wickman blow up last year had something to do with religion?:

Wickman:  "God doesn't exist."
Byrd: "Fuck you  he does, bitch."
Wickman: "If there was a God I'd be able to close out games without giving everyone heart attacks."

mayham ensues.

OT, I'm reading Blind Side by Michael Lewis - the guy that wrote Moneyball.  This time it's about HS / College / pro football - sorta.  I can see some holes in it but it's a damn good book.

BTW, I thought Liars Poker was his best work.
