Find that out pitch, Lofgren.  Stay healthy JD.

I'm rooting for Jeff Harris to somehow stay in the organization beyond the Spring.

I used to be like you.  But then, I was at Senor Frog's in Cabo and I saw him.  All 5 foot no inches of him, clad in an ironic pre-worn T-shirt and three hundred dollar pre-torn jeans.   Flip-flops.  And the constant checking of his cell phone (one of those T-Mobile, Paris Hilton kinds) to see if he had any new texts.  You would have swooned too.

So can you
Everybody says that the shapman stutters
But doesn't ever stutters when he sings
But what you don't know
I'm gonna tell you right now
That the stutter and the shap is the same thing
Yo, I'm the shap man
Where's the shap man? I'm the shap man.

Why should we be pleasing any politician heathens who would
Try to change the seasons if they could
The state of the condition
Insults my institution
And it only makes me crazy and my heart like wood

Everybody stutters one way or the other

I always laugh (and pity) the people lined up at Ticketmaster stations in Giant Eagle on saturday mornings... even the first person in line is less than 50/50 to get tickets for popular events thanks to the online sales.  Anyone after them is verbing in the wind.

I was at the mall last year the day tickets went on sale--wasn't buying any myself--and the line went to the horizon.  I thought there was a signing until I remembered what day it was.

In-person tickets don't have a service charge, and you can look around a bit instead of just being told where the best available seats are.  I like those options.

Okay, I think this covers everything:

Six-packs and the opening series went on sale the day after Thanksgiving.

Season ticket holders can buy extra tickets starting today in person or online.

Indians.com people can order tickets today.

The rest of the world can start getting single game tickets online, by phone, or in person on Saturday.

This is my understanding.  Aaaaanyway.  There's a game on.

Re: Game Thread: February 28, 2008
You know what, I will grant that there are diseases where iron overload (hemochromatosis) is a key contributor to systemic problems, particularly damaging to the liver.  But you're implication that every man just continues to acculumate iron to an unhealthy level is misleading and flat out untrue.

Untreated excess iron will kill you.  What you've failed to mention is that there is a specific gene mutation that leads to an iron overload, which in fact makes it predominantly hereditary.  Nancy Andrews published a nice overview on this in the New England Journal of Medicine in December of 1999 (the exact reference eludes me for the moment).

Now, I'll do what you've failed to do upon request for many days now and I'll show you some credentials.  If you decide that calling me a "quack" is still appropriate, that's your call.

I hold a Ph.D. in organometallic chemistry and a M.S. in inorganic chemistry from Vanderbilt University and a B.S. in chemistry with concentration in the A.C.S.-certified track and the secondary education track.  For what it's worth, I also hold a high school diploma from McDowell High School.  Since my Ph.D., I've moving into continuing medical education, so I spend a great deal of my time crafting education for physicians that is required to be fair and balanced.  I am my company's specialist in oncology and hematology, which encompasses anemia and hemophilia.  Does that mean I'm an expert on everything?  No, not really, but I'll bet you anything that people are willing to believe that I'm reasonably informed about this topic.

Why are living off past information.  Just having the genetic mutation does not mean you will have an iron overload.  Also not having this mutation doesn't mean you aren't at risk of having an iron overload.  There is more current research on this issues Here.

Re: Game Thread: February 28, 2008
Just having the genetic mutation does not mean you will have an iron overload.

Agreed, so why then should every man over 18 have blood removed?

Also not having this mutation doesn't mean you aren't at risk of having an iron overload.

Also agreed, so why then should every man over 18 have blood removed?

There is more current research on this issues.

Also agreed, can we try using some primary, peer reviewed literature instead of your newscripts and wikipedia entries?

I will pull a couple of things out of your link:

The study also found that whites had the highest prevalence of the key mutation in their hemochromatosis genes (4.4 per 1,000). But even people who carry this mutation in both copies of the gene have only a 60 percent risk of developing symptoms.

So, how serious a problem is this?  4.4 out of 1000 have the mutation, but only 60% of them (or 2.6 out of 1000) will develop the disease.  So why then should every man over 18 have blood removed?

In a commentary also published in the journal, Drs. Robert Fleming and Bruce Bacon of the St. Louis University School of Medicine noted that other genes have already been detected that can mutate to influence iron loads, and suggest that while the most common mutation seems to be responsible for most iron overloads, the new study suggests "iron status is significantly influenced by other genetic factors, environmental factors, or both.

The most common mutation seems to be responsible for most iron overloads.  And that only results in 2.6 out of a 1000 have the disease to the extent that treatment is required.  So why then should every man over 18 have blood removed?

You have a lot to learn about epidemiology.

Everyone that can give blood should...to help others  that need blood owing to accidents and transfusion needs, etc.  That doesn't have anything to do with iron overload though.

Your assessment of risk is way off.  But if you want to go through blood letting to diminish your personal risk, knock yourself out buddy.

I'm glad that you see the humor in that website.  If only you'd understand what the rest of us find so humorous about most of your links.

Now, I'll speak with you again regarding baseball, but that's as far as I'm going to go.  If you really want to talk about holistic medicine or whatever it is that you think you're talking about, couldn't you find a blog somewhere else to do it?   Seriously, if you go back through the thread, you appear to have contributed nothing.  Just baiting and trolling.  I hate that I took your bait today.

Re: Game Thread: February 28, 2008
I never bait, I only try to educate.  No one knows anything until they realize they don't know everything.  Instead or assuming what you know or you think you know is correct you should research your information first.   One thing I have often found with most Doctors is that they assume they know everything and fail to listen to their patients.  Not everything is as black and white as it may seem.

I firmly believe in a holistic approach to medicine and would ask you to question the merits of traditional Western medicine.  Often the medicines prescribed to patients cause more harm then good and often lead to more diseases or inflictions.  The Phoneix Suns are an excellent example of combining holistic medicine with more tradition Western medicine.  One area the Indians claim to be experts in is rebuilding players careers and health and yet they allow or permit certain players to act outside of a holistic approach.  One of the most important aspects of long term success is health and the best way to accomplish this is to have a holistic approach and by maintain proper body weight control and exercise.  There is a balance that must be struck between athletic performance and overall health.  One of the reason MLB teams don't fully treat players is because they look at them as sort term assets and not as more complex human beings where long term health is less important then short term results.  However, both the team and player would be richly rewarded with a more detailed approach to physical and mental health.

I worry about C.C due to his fiscal fat not so much about his left arm.  It is incorrect to conclude any player has fully maximized his potential as a player.  No player has ever fully maximized his talents even ones in tremendous shape.  My only point when I bring these issues to the table is to bring forth more important long term health issues of the team.  People assume because a player is in the majors that they have done everything they can to succeed but that would be false.  Even silver sluggers and Cy Young award winner have not fully exploited their talents.  To assume that Kirby Puckett could never been better then he was is false.  Being in better shape increases reaction time and hand eye coordination as well as body control.

As I have mentions before HRV is a major key to understanding athletics's performance.  Athletes that have the best HRV have the best performances.  This research is underdeveloped at this time but in the short term future we will have a better understanding of what MAKES a great player.  HRV is somewhat genetic but is more influenced by the balance between training, rest and nutrition.

Often times it is easy to dismiss the first glance or intuitive information but this is and always will be the primary underpinnings of all our decisions and assumptions.  It is also false to only use data as a means to a conclusion.  This is not to say that the data is flawed but only that the applications are not correct.  Mathematics are useful in all fields of life but should not be the only way we make decisions.  Being human means you don't have to live off data only and have the ability to see beyond the numbers.

See his above response to the good Doctor.

At this point, given what we've seen here today, it's clear that E5's primary motivation for reading and commenting on this site is to garner attention.  This is generally understood as trolling and, as such, should not, in my opinion, be accepted on this site, generally noted for such high standards.

I have no doubt that Jay and Ryan have good reasons for all of the decisions they make in the ongoing maintenance of this site.  That I disagree with them on this issue is more an indication of my subjective view of the value of E5's contributions and less a comment on their fitness as moderators.  I just wanted to be clear regarding what I see as his motive and contribution.

The reason sea salt is so expensive is because the idea of it is French.  Liver?  Cheap.  Liver cut from a muzzle-loaded goose?  Nearly costs as much as silver.

But those damn frogs need their "grey" salt, which they can "taste".  I use Kosher most of the time, but only because I like to control where it goes.  Big grains are better imo than small.  Was that off topic?
