O (snap) Canada

The wonderful Tony Lastoria has been putting up his "winter haven diaries" over at theclevelandfan.com, and in addition to mentioning that Weglarz was finally in camp with Olympic baseball qualifying over -- USA gets an automatic berth, in case anybody was wondering, and Canada finished first in the qualifying -- he posted this wonderful video of a near brawl between the Japanese Taiwanese and Canadian Olympic qualifying teams:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeBOk-UxX5U&feature=related

Weglarz is #33, and you can glimpse him a couple times right there in the middle of the fracas. Watching this, I can't believe how big he is already. The kid just turned 20, and in the few highlights I saw of him last year he still looked like a teenager, but in this video he's practically Thome-sized. He's going to be a freaking monster.

Oh, and I didn't even mention that he led all hitters in HR (3) and SLG (.950(!)) in the qualifying.

What do you know, Lastoria cites an unknown source saying Salcedo is signed.  I choose to believe him.  Who's looking forward to the Salcedo-Diaz left side combo?

Don't know if the link was posted before, but the newspaper article he's citing is here.

It seems credible, simply in that I don't know why it would be reported if it weren't true.  I do know the Indians have every reason not to confirm it until it's finalized.  They may well have an agreement that is binding unless they cancel it after the physical and document review.

The article makes a point of saying that verification of Salcedo's actual age has already been completed, an crucial step when giving money to a 16-year-old who already looks 25, but the devil may be in the details, and the story's only sources seem to be the player and his family alone.

Re: O (snap) Canada
Just so we're clear here, we have,

-The article in El Caribe dated Feb. 22 stating that he had been signed for $2.9 M.

-The Hoynes note from Mar. 12 saying that there was no answer yet:

During the winter a newspaper in the Dominican Republic reported that Salcedo signed with the Indians for $2.9 million. The Indians have denied that.

-Lastoria's Winter Haven blog Mar. 18, citing an unknown source as confirming the earlier report:

While the Indians have denied rumors that they signed Edward Salcedo, I have been told by someone close to the situation that he is signed and that the Indians have not officially announced the signing most likely because they are waiting for several things to be completed (his physical, verification of his vital statistics, etc).  According to the source, the $2.9 million amount he signed for as reported in El Caribe is correct.

So we're still relying on "someone."

Maybe we better try to get an option on that 3rd year of free agency. Can't be too careful.

Tony also pretty much confirms that 16 yr old Edward Salcedo has indeed been signed for the $2.9 mill originally indicated, but Tribe FO will not officially announce until all paperwork and physicals are complete.

All I did, though, was to switch to HTML, and it just worked.  I did go through the Preview screen  on my way to posting, so maybe that helped.

Incidentally, the <strike> tag is supported in the new software and even shows up on the editing toolbar, so your frustration should end completely in a matter of weeks.

Oh indiansfan, how soon we forget.  Zwick was rated by most of those college recruiting magazines ahead of Brady Quinn, the kid from St. Eds who QBed at the Air Force Academy and waaaaaaaaay ahead of the eventual Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.  High School QBs are a bigger unknown than single A left handed pitchers.

I thought I heard that too!
Hello zempf,

I thought I heard that; then again, I thought maybe I dreamt that up - thanks for confirming!  :-)

mauichuck - I remember Zwick was highly-rated; while there's probably a player or two I'm forgetting, he arguably might have been the biggest OSU bust in the last 10 years - I remember Zwick got many accolades, but when he played on the field, the offense just seemed to stall and not go anywhere.  I think I recall 1-2 games where Zwick looked like he could actually move the offense and the offense looked capable of scoring 20+ points a game.  Otherwise, the offense looked very shaky to me (and granted, that may not have all been Zwick's doing, but a good offense usually starts with a capable QB, and Zwick just didn't look like that guy 90-95% of the time he was in there.)

That's why I'm hoping Pryor will be much better and live up to the hype he's getting (and you were correct in your "early announcement" - he did confirm he's coming to OSU, which should boost up the OSU draft class another notch or two); I heard some say that Pryor isn't as great as he's being touted, but I think the fact he can come into OSU and basically learn for one season behind Boeckman will help him in the long-run, rather than go to Penn State or Michigan and be thrust into having to lead their offense from the start.

Hopefully, the year of preparation before taking over will enable him to live up to the hype that he is getting.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

May the Tribe be great in 2008! :-)

Re: I thought I heard that too!
Do you think he'll redshirt, or will he be on the field next year?  Seems like a dumb question with regards to a QB, but maybe a run-first guy needs less time to study, esp when he wont start?

Re: I thought I heard that too!
Ohio State is already planning to use him as a "Tebow" type player. 10-15 snaps per game has already been discussed.

by gahnki on Mar 19, 2008 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

As gahnki mentioned, Pryor will supposedly
be used in a "Tebow-type" fashion next season, which could help to provide an interesting element in the OSU offense next season.

At the same time, Pryor will get to learn the college game and improve his ability as a pure passer at a slower pace from the sideline rather than being thrust into the starting lineup right away at Michigan or Penn State.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

May the Tribe be great in 2008! :-)

by indiansfan on Mar 20, 2008 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: I thought I heard that too!
Penn State and Michigan fans are the only ones who don't believe in his talent.

Watch the Army All American game clips if you don't believe me. This is against major division one high school competition. Every single one of these players will be playing at a major college program. And he won MVP at the game.

http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=43028

And Ohio State was the best situation for him. Going to Michigan or Penn State could have been a disaster. He would have been looked at as the "savior" at those programs.

by gahnki on Mar 19, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe you - I know I heard one or two
"reports" that suggested that Pryor isn't as good as most are thinking; if I recall correctly, they weren't convinced he's as advanced as most are claiming because they were not as convinced about the competition he was facing and the fact that his passing skills and instincts are not that developed yet (though still very solid for a HS QB.)

However, I believe you, especially in regards to how he played at the Army All-American game.  Of course, no one is an absolute sure thing (look at Zwick and Leak, for instance,) but I'm cautiously optimistic that he'll make a big difference at OSU - I'm sure Michigan and Penn State both are not thrilled that not only did they not get him, they'll have to face him once each season in conference games.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

May the Tribe be great in 2008! :-)

Re: I believe you - I know I heard one or two
It is good to note that Pryor has an incredibly strong arm, but his throwing mechanics are off. I have no doubt that he will improve at Ohio State.

And don't believe anything you hear related to TP on ESPN. They are extremely mad at him for calling them out in his press conference and subsequent interviews.

I have been told by a reliable source that the ESPN producers have ordered their "analysts" to question Pryor's character and talent to get even with him.

Quite sad that an organization would attack an 18 year old, but nothing seems to be off limits to "Espin".

Re: I believe you - I know I heard one or two
You would think.

But trust me on this. It comes from the same place where I heard the Pryor = Buckeye information.

ESPN has already questioned his character on national radio. Chris Fowler stated that Kirk Herbstreit relayed information to him that Pryor is Maurice Clarett the second.

A ridiculous assumption that is meant to be a strike at the OSU program and the player's character.

The ESPN producers ordered Herbstreit/Fowler to say this, because of the national perception of him as a Buckeye homer. Therefore, anything Herbie says about OSU must be true.

Little does the nation know as Herbstreit has been cut off from the OSU program for a few years now. He is not considered favorably by those near the program.

His various comments through the years come off as bitter and ridiculous. He is no longer wanted anywhere near Columbus.

by gahnki on Mar 21, 2008 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: No offense to Zwick,
That's really not true.

There are a few notable misses, but pointing out Justin Zwick is almost like me pointing out Manny Ramirez's rapid progression through the minors as the norm.

High school talents usually project the best to college ball. I'm not sure what makes it that way but it really is the truth.

The Army All American game is a collection of the top talents in high school, and notable MVP's include:

Vince Young
Tim Tebow
Adrian Peterson
Beanie Wells
Ted Ginn Jr.
Desean Jackson
Chris Leak

And now...

Terrelle Pryor

Chris Leak is probably the only player to not live  up to the hype, but he won a national championship as well.

by gahnki on Mar 19, 2008 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

No offense, but Zwick never was a major
factor in the OSU program as he was expected to become - that's why I don't think he lived up to expectations.

Hello gahnki,

I understand Zwick did quite well in HS, but really was never that much of a factor in the OSU offense.  Zwick had every opportunity to become the full-time, long-term starter at OSU, but never played well enough for any length of time to really establish himself as the main guy.  Smith became that guy.  It helped that Smith could run, something Zwick couldn't do, but arguably, Zwick was the better pure passer and more complete QB coming out of HS than Smith was, yet Zwick couldn't hold off Smith to become the full-time starter.

That's why I don't think Zwick "lived up to the hype."  Of the others you mentioned, I don't think Leak was that great either, though he too could run.  Leak certainly helped to win a National Championship, but it was more than just him (and especially, the Florida defensive line's play against the OSU offensive line that struggled mightily against FU's better speed) that led to Florida upsetting OSU in the National Championship.

Another similarity to both Zwick and Leak - neither have had much of any impact in the NFL to this point, and I'm not sure they ever will.

Just my 2 cents - no offense.

May the Tribe be great in 2008! :-)
