Best/Worst AL Defenders
BBTF compiled the list.
Franky G gets one of the highest ratings (not only for his position, but overall). Asdrubal and Grady score well, too.
Surprisingly, Garko scores among one of the worst at his position and Ben Francisco is actually one of the top 5 LF'ers (!!).

Fun With Numbers: Diatriber approximates the 2009 payroll
First person I have seen try to do this for '09. In the end, he guesses that the Tribe will be 18 million dollars lighter going into the next season. Seems like a good chunk of change, but when you consider that the Yankees have 3-4 times that amount coming off their payroll too ... it makes you wonder just what Free Agency bread crumbs will be left for the rest of the league.

Fasano the reason behind Sowers recent success?
"I see somebody with a lot of talent," Fasano said. "Jeremy has an underrated fastball, and he can locate that fastball pretty well. What's making him successful now is his ability to repeat pitches and to throw breaking balls behind in the count.
---
In the last three starts where Fasano has caught for him, Sowers has a 4.00 ERA (compared to 6.69 before), batters are hitting .175 against him (compared to .350 before). Sowers was giving up a homerun every 4 innings, now he has only given up 1 homer in the last 18 innings.
Aberration? It will be interesting to see going forward.

Melvin goes in-depth on the Sabathia trade.
A Sporting News writer did a piece on the Sabathia trade. It's mostly from Melvin's perspective, but has a few interesting quotes from Shapiro and Sabathia. Has some candid talk from Melvin about the timeline of the deal and what prompted it to happen when it did.
It is pretty interesting to note that the first contact with Milwaukee was on June 13th. The Brewers were actually further out of first place than we were at the time.

Trading two prospects of this caliber for 200 at-bats of Casey Blake is a ridiculous waste.
Joe Sheehan, Baseball Prospectus
First, the price. Power righthander Jonathan Meloan, whose 5-10 and record and 4.97 ERA at Las Vegas are less reflective of his talent than they are the context in which he’s pitching, is half the package. Meloan is about ready to be a middle man in the majors, and his upside is that of a high-leverage, high-strikeout reliever. The other prospect, Carlos Santana, is a catcher who is a little old for the Florida State League (22), however he has hit very well this year and has earned good grades for his defense. These prospects haven’t gotten the play that Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw and the rest of the Dodgers’ youth has gotten, but they’re also very talented and can’t be treated as free resources. Trading two prospects of this caliber for 200 at-bats of Casey Blake is a ridiculous waste.
Moreover, according to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark, Blake is slotted to take time from LaRoche, who is almost certainly as good Blake, and has upside Blake doesn’t have. The Dodgers could improve their situation by playing Blake in the outfield in lieu of Andruw Jones and/or Juan Pierre, as those two are among the worst players in baseball in 2008, and Blake.isn’t. Playing Blake, or if you prefer, the outfielders ahead of LaRoche is actively hurting your team’s chances of winning. This is nothing new for the Dodgers, who have come to value experience over performance, but it is a sight to behold.
This is a great package for Mark Shapiro. It’s actually a better package, relative to what he gave away, that the Matt LaPorta-plus one he received for CC Sabathia.

Injuries, Movies, Coffee and Gin talk.
• Barfield could be two to three weeks away from returning.
• Victor is about three weeks removed from game activity.
• Fausto Carmona will have his last rehab start at Akron tommorow and is expected back next week.
• Travis Hafner's is at about 65 percent strength, Soloff is "very optimistic."

Second-half prediction thread.
A boring day of no baseball. Let's kick around some bold predictions for the team in the second half.
What current Indian will have a huge second half?
Which (current) minor leaguer will make the biggest mark?
Who will be the biggest disappointment?
How many wins will we finish with?
Guess Andy Marte's season ending average & homeruns.
--
Tack on any other bold predictions you see fit.
Come September, we can revisit the thread and see who was remarkably prescient.

K-rod to test the Free Agent market this year
Rodriguez, 26, told the Los Angeles Times that the Angels "had six years. They didn't get anything done with me. If I wait six years, why not wait another 2 1/2 months?"

What's the odds of Shapiro paying 10+ million a year for a closer? Nil?
